Valentino Histoire Patent Tote

I wasn't into the Histoire even though it seemed like the whole world went bonkers over it. There was too much going on, the thickly braided handles, the same braided detail on the many pockets, all the features we too big like a cartoon character. But of course it was Angelina Jolie who propelled it into instant "it bag" status with the matching miniature version for *Sahara. But this tote is way more my taste. It still has bold details and the bright fuchsia in patent certainly adds an aggressive punch that screams to be noticed. Plus, it is a giant bag at 17" x 15". The little bit of the braiding detail is all that is needed, and the scrunched sides held together by simple buckles are way more appealing. It is open on top and is held closed by the cinching of the sides. I'm actually seriously digging this bag, it is the ONLY Valentino that has ever stirred me up. At Saks Fifth Avenueicon for $1895. Also comes in black which is just as great, just less loud.

* Correction: Ooops, my bad. It's Zahara.

Diane von Furstenberg Philomena Clutch

I can't wait for the Fall bag collection from DVF, especially this lovely clutch. It is a must have for sure!! Pink metallic with studs??!!! Hello! It was as if Diane herself consulted with us to come up with such a to-die-for clutch. It is a simple, functional foldover, of course functional since that is what she's all about. This speaks to all our many and sometimes contradicting sides - girly, sassy, tough, flirty, and glamorous. You don't, and probably shouldn't, get all rocked out when wearing this, this is perfect for my sporty casual look as well as the feminine flouncy dress with strappy stilettos. DVF is getting serious with her bags, if she continues in this direction, my ENTIRE wardrobe including bags will be nothing but DVF! At Shopbop for $595.

Chloe Ethel Tote

chloeetheltote.jpg Chloe is slowly but surely making its way back into our hearts.  It was my friend Connie's birthday yesterday and we chipped in to buy her the Chloe Paraty in chocolate python.  We have a "birthday" group of girlfriends-- there are 4 of us and we have been celebrating each other's birthdays together for 5 years.  There is always champagne involved of course (and a LOT of dessert), sometimes the lunches end at dinner time!  The birthday girl gets to pick out whatever gift she wants!  We decided a long time ago that we're too old for surprises (unless it's from our hubbies and involve any kind of diamonds and of course anything made by our kids!) so it works out for everyone!

If you're looking for a gift for a girlfriend or for mom, here is another Chloe worthy of consideration.  The oversized Ethel tote (15x15) in delectable berry is cheeky bright with a flash of brilliantly contrasting orange leather-- an edgy detail that makes the simple tote more interesting.  Thankfully Chloe is over the heavy hardware of the Paddington days, the subtle gold tonal hardware is very understated and the lambskin with goatskin trim make the tote super lightweight to boot.  Really a fab summer tote to travel with and play with-- I'd never thought I'd love a purple bag trimmed with bright orange but hey, never say never, right?

Balenciaga AW2009 Neo-Classic Tote

AHHHH, finally a new design from Balenciaga that will rival the Motorcycle and the City. This is an instant classic with new hardware and the tab closure - gone are the grommets and the zipper outer pocket. Seriously tired of those. You still get a bit of the signature buckle but it is all switched up and actually add function by being on the side to expand the girth (well, not super functional but at least makes more sense than the corner buckles that do nothing). The earthy clay color is also a change from the bright oranges or the dirt browns that they always have for Fall. I have no idea how much this bag is, but will probably not veer too far from the $1600-1800 range or maybe they will surprise us and be nice to our shrinking wallets by offering it for $1200! I'm channeling the powers that be at Balenciaga, "Trust me, if you sell this for $1200, it will sell out before it reaches any sale, so in the end it will all even out for you". That's my free 2 cents for them.

Jil Sander Nappa Boudin Tote

I am envisioning a girl, maybe me, wearing a summer shift dress in sandals, flats, skipping down the street with a giant smile. It's like a typical ad for anything but none of it works if she has a shoulder bag or giant tote, she needs this Jil Sander top handle tote that is small and white white. I just discovered that giant white bags do not really work (just had to return one), there is way too much surface area to worry about, but a small white bag is essential for summer fun. Well, this isn't tiny tiny, but I love that it folds in for a bowler shape or opened for a bigger tote. The rolled thread handles are all the details that is needed for the sumptuous soft leather, you wouldn't want to ruin the pristineness. Also comes in black (and the Crackled Black which I think is gross) but none of what I just said would apply. At Barneys New York for $1575.

Lambertson Truex Small Canvas Tote

Lambertson Truex filed for bankruptcy because they're not selling enough bags which I can understand because I have never bought a Lambertson and I can't say that I know someone who has. And that's pretty bad statistics. But this one seems ok. But then again, it's a canvas tote and the only one who can make an industry out of that is Tory Burch. This one is by far cuter and better though. The silver leather handles and the white canvas is so crisp and clean for the summer. The tote is not huge but the gusset is very generous so will still fit all your big summer items. There are nice side pockets and even comes with a shoulder strap. A nice gift for your mom if she needs one. At Saks Fifth Avenue

MARC by Marc Jacobs Moto Proto Zag Hobo

This is such a great bag for bag lovers of all ages and most budgets. The hobo is no longer a trend but a staple and must but recent renditions have more shape and details so it is not just a giant sack. This one especially, has all the trimmings you crave, the outside pockets are not only a time saver but make it chic and lovable. The large flap pockets are roomy and the slight pooch makes them super cute! There is also a zipper pocket so you most of what you need are on the outside! The grey is also the best neutral, much much better than black or brown because it will work for the summer. The Marc by Marc Jacobs logo is a bit annoying, it's got that special font which is hokey - can't believe I'm saying this but I almost prefer the metal plate. The price is incredible for such soft and scrumptious leather, only $548 but don't run out and get it just yet, sale season is upon us and everything will start to discount in the next few week, if not already. At Barneys New York.

Smythson Convertible Travel Clutch

I have one of these travel clutches for long oversea trips when there are lots of documentation, itinerary, various tickets, etc. - I even keep my Kindle in there! It is great to be so organized and is quite fabulous! But of course now they come out with an improved version, with a removable interior divider so when you get settled, you can use it as a clutch! OK, I was still using mine as a clutch but it was kind of awkward and makes it less fabulous when people realize you are using some sort of receipt organizer as a clutch =( There is a zipper pocket so is fully functional as a clutch and the ample girth is enough to hold a small wallet, phone and camera. And this Peppermint color is so dreamy! Perfect for beach vacations!! I want!!! I must!!!! At Smythson for $650.

Prada Lace Print Wristlet

I am obsessing over that Jimmy Choo lace clutch but it is just way way too expensive. If you like the idea and can live without the studs (probably has a longer shelf life this way) here is a really good option for like 1/4 of the price. This Prada lace print wristlet has some advantages over the Jimmy Choo other than the price. Well, for starters, wristlets are always a better option when it comes to convenience. You know those handy hooks under bars for your bags? Uh, yeah, pretty much useless when you have a clutch but with this, voila! And what about the bathroom? There is no sanitary resting place while you take care of business. If toilet paper rolls are exposed instead of in that case, then the tops of them are a good option cuz your only other option would be the sanitary trash can. EWWW!! This lace is also cut leather so is more novel and probably more durable. At Barneys $710 but it is quite small at 4.5" x 7.45" x 1.75".
