Get ready to give the old-fashioned color wheel a big spin. Rainbow brights make up Spring’s new color palette, and I could not be more excited – I love color! And this is just the beginning. We will be seeing many more thrilling hues, including neon, throughout the season, but let’s kick things off with the staples.
Here are my favorite bags in every color of the rainbow, in the authentic order of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. One color fades into another, but all of these bags stand out amongst the crowd. While bright, my picks are true classics (well, except for the Wang, but it’s a tote!) that will withstand the test of time – and of color. A safe bet once the trend has passed, with new tones breathing new life into bags we’ve seen so much of. Hooray to a bright new future!

Green: Reed Krakoff Leather Shoulder Bag On Net-a-Porter for $990.
Blue: Alexander Wang Prisma Leather Tote On Net-a-Porter for $685.

It seems only fitting that Apple, a company known for carbon-footprint consciousness, would stand behind an all-vegan bag label. Matt & Nat have just collaborated with Apple for a second collection of satchels even the greenest of snobs can be proud to carry.
With crinkly faux-leather and accenting zipper hardware, the Ritual messenger ($180) is as relaxed-cool as it is environmentally aware. Recycled gray suede-effect lining makes a nice home for your 13” MacBook – and I especially appreciate the jolt of candied-apple color. You would never guess it, but the Phoenix laptop carrier ($265) is made out of recycled bottles! All-around zips make for easy access, and black-on-white makes for graphic contrast. Of course, they both offer every possible organizational pocket for all your Apple gadgets. Hip styles that work for you – ideal for the Apple customer! Available at Matt & Nat.
Pair with: Stay vegan – and comfortable – as you dash around, technology in tow, with Stella McCartney’s ankle-wrap sandal. Cork and faux leather come together for a classic springtime feel. At Neiman Marcus for $495.
It’s not always all about animal prints! Printed bags are great when you’re eager to get playful with your look, and the latest releases prove that designers can get as frisky as the best of us. And sometimes even a little too sportive for some. Here, the top picks of the latest prints that march to the beat of their own designer.
1) Dolce & Gabbana Quilted Cotton and Raffia Top-Handle: Out of the vegetable garden and onto your arm! Dolce & Gabbana show off their sense of humor with their Spring 2012 collection, and challenge you to do the same with this eggplant-print purse. All-out novelty or fun conversation piece? You decide. On Luisa Via Roma for $976.
2) Marni Printed PVC and Leather Clutch: No assortment of “quirky” bags would be complete without a little Marni in the mix. This oversized, two-faced clutch is just that – an energetic mix of retro, tile-like graphics and kooky colors. On Net-a-Porter for $385.
3) Lanvin Printed Gems Cotton Tote: Normally, I like some actual rocks with my sparkle, but in the case of a basic, toss-and-go tote, Lanvin shows off a clever play on the concept of being decked in jewels. At Barneys New York for $850.
4) Theyskens’ Theory Anta Mini Shoulder Bag: I wouldn’t expect an abstract watercolor painting to translate fluidly to a daytime satchel, but Theyskens does his arts and crafts with unbothered style. At Barneys New York for $495.
5) Valentino Rockstud Panther-Print Calf-Hair Tote: And then there’s the queen of the jungle! Valentino’s trademark studs just got more rock ‘n’ roll, yet with this stripped-down panther-pattern, they somehow keep things as elegant as ever. On Net-a-Porter for $2,995.
My trip to Italy revived my appreciation for Prada. But, seriously, this new tweed-print collection is really good (even if Kara Ross kind of did the same thing two seasons ago and McQueen did it last season). Regardless, Prada’s gotten their groove back for spring, and I’m liking the details they’ve brought to the table.
Neutral tweed with satin trim (and an inviting pink satin interior) is ladylike, especially in this classic frame-top shape. Inject a silver monkey as the closure, and you’ve got a big wink of humor – very necessary if you’re going the prim route, or else you’ll end up looking just plain stiff ($1,350).
The chain-strap shoulder bag falls more into the autumn category, but save it for evenings out. Something like this is an ideal contrast for spring’s bright colors. And the chunky Plexiglass chain serves up the funk a simplistic bag like this needs ($1,350).
Sure, the tote is just another Prada tote – thankfully, sketch-like pattern offers just enough of shake-up to break up the hard angularity. It just goes to show a strong print can save the day ($1,420).
All available at Saks Fifth Avenue.

Oooh, python set against straw makes for a fab contrast! It’s pure. It’s natural. It’s glamorous. But, being the decadents they are, Dolce & Gabbana couldn’t keep themselves from adding a gold chain. The flashy touch musses it up especially with the gold lock – this would pack a bigger impact without an extra fussiness. With woven straw and sensuous snake, you’ve already got a cool juxtaposition that can groove on its own.
Now that I think about it, I would actually like to see this combo on a more relaxed shape as well…and perhaps with some color injected into it. A hot and bright python trim would be super-amazing for spring. Wait, maybe I don’t actually like this bag! Since I’m redesigning almost every aspect, I think I just like the concept of the opposing fabrications. Available for pre-order at Neiman Marcus for $1,190.
As an alternative: Lanvin’s big, casual tote has the laid-back feel the blend of snake and straw requires for a truly organic feel. Black grosgrain trim enhances the contrast, and while the handle doesn’t wow me, at least it has the powerful burst of color I crave. On Net-a-Porter for $1,190.
Granted, the JL bowling bag from Lanvin is a nice looking bag but why the JL logo stamp? I know it stands for Jeanne Lanvin but honestly thought Emma Stone stole J. Lo’s smooth beige leather bag when I first saw it. The embossed logo doesn’t make any sense- why bring back the Jeanne Lanvin name now? It’s not identifiable as the modern Lanvin brand to the average person nor the person carrying it. But besides that minor detail, the bag is a winner. It’s been a while since we’ve seen such pretty structure from Lanvin. Side pockets for our tech toys and buckled front pocket for stuff you don’t want to lose. There are two sizes but I prefer the PM, the short handles balance the wide yet narrow bag. What do you think of the re-branding of Lanvin?
At Luisa Via Roma for $5,949.
For some, the plain Veneta hobo is just too, well…plain. Even thought the excitement is in the weave, it might not be enough for some. But you don’t want to get too carried away and ruin a classic so something as subtle as this Safari print can totally seal the deal. The large (or even Jumbo) Veneta has way more character than the precious little sister ones, especially in a novelty design like this, you want to go bold.
Having just come back from Florence and hearing some disturbing things about the manufacturing practices of major brands, this one included, has shocked and depressed me a bit, but I am not here to discuss politics. This is just about aesthetics and no matter what you say, you cannot touch Bottega Veneta when it comes to beauty.
At Net-a-Porter for $2750, which is kind of crazy. Price is another point of discussion that has nothing to do with politics and everything to do with how we are being duped for paying for things that uses the term “Made in Italy” very very loosely. Another topic, another time.

I was lucky enough to find this little guy under my Christmas tree and I don’t think I’ve taken it off since. The Marc by Marc Jacobs Classic Q Karlie bag is compact, cute yet user friendly with multiple pockets for organization. The credit card slots keep all of my plastic in the right place and the two separate large pockets allow me to put important things on one side (lip gloss, candy and advil) and my phone and other odds and ends in the other. It’s the perfect size for day dates because you can fit necessities in it without looking like you’re one of those girls who can’t leave the house without a backpack full of cosmetics/hair products/ pepper spray. It fit’s everything I need and I can conveniently carry it across my body without feeling like I’m going hiking because of the weight. I should also mention, the leather is so soft I have to ask my friends to stop touching it occasionally.
Light, easy and oh, so chic, pick this bag up at Saks Fifth Avenue for $258 and take a load off.
