Chloe Loses It's Cool

This collection looks like it was designed for a Jane Austen movie about starving artists. Take it or leave it with that comment, I'm not sure it's either good or bad. Luckily though, the bags are reminiscent of what Pheobe left behind. The loss of Phoebe is ovbious in this collection but we aren't bound to the Chloe label, being that labels are just marketing machines these days anyways and are no longer design houses that represent any particular sense of style, just whatever is on the trend menu.

Stella McCartney Fall 2006

I do like the collection as a whole, Stella's talent proves that genes win in the nature vs nurture debate, but I just need to point out the fact that she find these unforgivable 80's trends to be chic again is baffling since she grew up when I did and I'm still embarrassed by it. I know "higher" waisted pants are back, (thank god cuz I'm telling you, the low hip jeans have ruined my body. Does anyone else have this problem where all your fat migrated to just above the waistline so now I have no waist?) but this is really kind of silly, I mean it's hiked up so far it actually works as a corset and I think there is camel toe. And the "Santino" jumpsuit, it's not even flattering on this 5'10" 100 pound model. Other than that, Stella stands up to all the praise with another huge collection.

Dior Gaucho for Fall 2006

How boring. All he showed were Gaucho bags. I know we had an earlier post where we liked this bag, but after further consideration, I think this bag is stupid. It flips open in half, the top half only has what you see on the front and the bottom is just a zipper compartment, with some pockets in between the two flaps. I mean, for such a big bag, it really is a waste of leather and arm strength. And the small ones are completely useless. I suppose it's sort of cute but NOT cute enough to make an entire collection of it. OK, so it's also done in python, and you would think that would get us going, but slapping snake skin on a stupid bag just makes a stupid snake skin bag. As for the rest of the collection, it's a little narcissistic don't you think? Having all Axel Rose look-a-like Galliano look-a-likes? And even if you like that idea, wouldn't it make more sense to make copies of himself for John Galliano instead of Dior?

Balenciaga Fall 2006

This collection is very "precious" - makes me want to go to London for a polo match and sip tea in my Lomonosov tea set ($10,000 for a set for 6). I was a little concerned after seeing the dress he did for Gwyneth Paltrow for the Golden Globes, I thought his whole collection was going to made out of doilies and curtains for Grandmothers. But thankfully Nicolas thought of designing for girls, it's a good thing somebody is. The little balerina tops are girly and sophisticated and the ultra chic dresses are fantastic. I am, however, a little confused about the tent dress. Well, doesn't matter, I feel so uplifted and happy (I almost want to delete the last entry, can't stand to look at it).

Horror in Paris

Viktor and Rolf and Yohji Yamamoto

By the looks of the early shows in Paris, inspiration comes from bad horror movies. It is quite disturbing. I was literally afraid to look at some of the images. The makeup for Yohji Yamamoto reminded me of the little girl in The Ring and the entire Undercover show was inspired by the Scarecrow character in Batman Begins. I really hope things brighten up later on in the week. I don't have the stomach for this.

Fendi's Runway Accident

I would like to include in our review of Fendi's show an acknowledgement of the photographers accident, which although took away from the great show, is in and of itself a story that bears our respect. In order to allow front row attendees a comfy experience, they overcrowded the photographer's stand. The floor collapsed from under them and many photographers were seriously injured. We do not take for granted that fashion blogs would be boring and worthless if it weren't for the great photographs we get. Vogue UK has a particularly harsh story about this incident.

Fendi Fall 2006

We love the clean lines, interesting shapes and suprising variety of this action packed collection. The Kaiser was definitely not lacking in inspiration and the brilliance was how he decided to use it all in one showing. There was a hint of military, kimono-esque dresses, modern floral shapes and a little bit of medieval glamour. It seems like there is a lot going on, but it all made sense in the way it was shown. It's elegant, young (sometimes cute), fresh and street sensible.

Prada Fall 2006

It's the end of high tech futuristic, straight line designs for Miuccia. We loved it 15 years ago but now the change is welcomed, although our review is mixed. The seriousness of the strong women image is a little 80's and the fur sleeves with animal print coat is too 'Clan of the Cave Bears guest starring on Dynasty' for our taste. Bunchy poofy is the new thing (Marc Jacob's spring line) but it's not exactly flattering (whereas Marc's silhouettes still have the body in mind). I know she is trying to get away from the prissy ladylike look, and tell me if you think I'm wrong here, but we like to look feminine and slim (and the reason we pay for Prada's impeccable tailoring). On the other hand, the bunchy bags are great! We love the playful yet chic look about them. It's a good thing she didn't venture too far on the staple of super high platforms because we need them and love them, especially these open toe platform sandals (one of us, the petite Snob, needs them more than the other but the other loves to tower over people in crowds and the added height makes my shoulders seem narrower). So, as always with Miuccia, strong on accessories, hit and miss on the clothes.

Chanel Spring 2006 Haute Couture

Yes, we like to make fun of the Kaiser but his couture runway show at the Grand Palais in Paris was nothing short of genius. OK, so no bags were shown, but we give props when props are in order. The spiral staircase is what you would expect from Karl, over the top (indeed!). He made Coco proud by modernizing her asthetics, like showing the collection in go-go boots similar to the ones she wore in the 50's (yes, 50's not 60's). His collection was black and white and had all the classics you would expect from the House of Chanel. What we love are all the camellias and organdy and satin details he does so well to give that girly flair without looking like a birthday cake. What I wouldn't do to lay down $500K to update my wardrobe. Ahhh, there is nothing so fabulous as haute couture!!

The Golden Globes fashion, in short, was frilly, ruffly and in desperate need of some hairspray and a bra. Here is our recap. And yes, the Shit List is longer because it's just more fun to make fun.
