Vogue 90th Anniversary Party

Vogue, September 1916. Price: One shilling. Vogue, December 2006 Price: 3.60 pounds

The Bag Snob girls have friends in chic places and one of them, the "Party Snob", was at Vogue's 90th anniversary party in London last week and reports on the fab fete of the year:

The cream of fashionista London was at the Serpentine Gallery in Hyde Park last Wednesday night sipping Moet et Chandon and some amazing cocktails for the 90th birthday of Vogue magazine. Kate Moss and her paramour Pete Doherty came and went in a flash (they breezed in, went to the terrace for a cigarette and left). Alexandra Shulman, the editor, greeted in a short gold Sixties dress while Nigella Lawson, as ever, was in all black. Other guests included Thandie Newton, Yasmin LeBon, Lily Cole, Emilia Fox, Jemma Kidd, Jasper Conran, Giles Deacon, Matthew Williamson, Zandra Rhodes, Lord and Lady Rogers, Nicky Haslam, and the fashion tip of the night was Opaque Tights, even with cocktail dresses. So get down to Wolford and stock up now. (Wolford Velvet de luxe 66 provides maximum opaque-ness)

My fellow guest at the party made a telling observation about the London fashion crowd - how less groomed they were than Americans, there were fewer manicures, fewer professional blow-dries (though certainly we had been to hairdresser that day) and most of, all the absence of serious surgery. Sure there were nips and tucks and botox, but middle aged women looked like middle aged women, not wannabe bimbos. It was a room full of wonderfully fashionable people, with boobs and hips and wrinkles, and we drank our champagne from saucer-shaped glasses. How satisfyingly retro.

Britney Needs to go Shopping

britneyonletterman.jpg

emiliopuccihalter.jpgNow that Britney has her life in order, she needs to call her stylist back. What is she wearing here? Is it a skort? It is ill-fitting and looks polyester and has a gross big plastic belt riding up her torso. If she is trying to show off her body, maybe she should wear something flattering. This Emilio Pucci halter with the links detail on the neckline would be an verawangbubblehem.jpgappropriate choice, it's fun, cute and sophisticated and is short enough to show off her great legs without being so cheap about it. Or if she wants to draw in her waist, instead of wearing a big stupid belt, this Vera Wang empire waist is incredibly flattering and adds lift to her post pregnancy breasts. We're just saying, cute body with ugly clothes is like cute guy with no job. It's just a waste, that's all.

I picked up this gorgeous Nina Ricci by Lars Nilsson bubble hem jacket (his last collection, Olivier Theyskens of Rochas fame is slated to take over as Creative Director next season), the photo really does not do it justice. It's an ultra feminine and flattering shape and will look darling with a skirt or over jeans, discounted to $494 from $988! I also snagged 3 other jackets, 2 dresses (including this fabulous
Chloe dress
!), and a top, all of it was 50% off so half of it was free :)

Holiday Little "Black" Dress

graemedress.jpg hindmarchprague.jpg

This isn't your typical nondescript little black dress, in fact, it isn't even black. This Graeme silk gown in tobacco is stunning yet it is understated enough for multiple wears during your holiday party season. The cummerbund stitching detail makes it super flattering, so go ahead and pig out! How much fun can you be having if you're chewing on carrot sticks all night? And have another glass of champagne or two while you're at it. The color of the dress is so soft it is screaming out for a fab gold bag to go with it and the Anya Hindmarch gold Prague clutch would be absolutely perfect. It will also go with just about everything you have in your closet. Gold is like black in many ways, except way less boring. Graeme dress on sale at Net a Porter for $1410. Anya Hindmarch clutch at Net a Porter for $424.

Trick OR Treat?

Happy Halloween! Ever since candy has decided to deposit around my belly everytime I come close to it, this has not been my favorite day of the year. To lighten my mood, and hopefully yours, here is a trick or treat review of costumes with pictures from Glam.

paris_hilton_police.jpg

The most obvious of all, Paris IS a trick. How is this even a Halloween costume? I mean, the idea of a costume is to be something different, you know, other than your regular 'ole slutty self. A real costume for Paris should be like Elmo or anything else along the lines of wholesome.

London Fashion Week
This is first story from Louise Hill, our Guest Editor At Large, who is a writer for a major fashion magazine based in London. We are excited to have her write for us and we hope you enjoy the fresh perspective from across the pond.

It’s good to know not all designers are the crazy egomaniacs we expect them to be. At recent London shows, two of our top boys showed their silly side sporting cheeky slogan t-shirts from the ingenious, if somewhat unlikely, design duo, House of Holland.

André the Fabulous

When André Leon Talley, Editor At Large for VOGUE, enters a room he doesn't just appear, he swoops in and takes over with his larger than life charismatic personality. I was invited to a private luncheon with the fabulous André last Friday and he not only graciously granted us an interview but allowed us a peek into his life of style and imparts a few style tips to dress by.

Chloe Spring '07

The design team at the House of Chloe managed to put together a Spring collection without a head designer (Paulo Melim from Marni is slated to arrive by year's end) and the result is a mixture of Phoebe's best hits with Anna Sui rejects. It's like an episode of Project Runway where each contestant is invited to design something different and it all comes out crazy and mismatched. The bags were also mundane and looked like parts of previous successful bags thrown together, i.e. the paddington handles with the edith body does not automatically translate to cute bag. The entire collection is mediocre at best and it'd be an understatement to say that we will not be holding our breaths for it to hit stores come spring. We are, however, excited at Paulo's imminent arrival and can't wait to see what his interpretation of Chloe will be.
