Derek Lam Elsa Clutch

dereklam_elsa.jpg

Derek Lam does glam rock without hardware, fringes or gimmicks. This is one of the best foldover clutches I've seen, most of them look like, well, a clutch folded in half. The mulit-layering and asymmetrical design throws off the eye so it looks more like a flap clutch, even the top zipper works perfectly in with the design. There is a little outer pocket and the loop handle gives you an extra option of how to carry it but also adds to the look. It folds over with a magnetic closure so if you stuff this thing silly, it will still fold over and close properly. I am a tomboy at heart so a clutch like this would give me my identity back even when wearing a totally girly dress (which I love but I hate looking overly frou frou, or actually that look hates me cuz I look weird when I'm all flounced up). Derek Lam Elsa Clutch at Shopbop for $790.

Anya Hindmarch Judd Straw Clutch

How cute is this for your summer beach bag? Throw it in there to keep your smaller items safe and take it out when you go to lunch. You can even take this out at as a regular clutch, it is 10.5" x 6.5" so it is much bigger than a coin purse, although it is totally flat so it won't hold much. If you love straw but don't want to invest in an entire bag just for your vacation, this is a cute little way to get a taste of summer. I love the cobalt leather against the natural straw! Also comes in yellow but the color gets washed out again the straw. At Anya Hindmarch for $240.

Notting Hill Lola - The Queen's Clutch

nottinghill_lolaclutch.jpgNottinghill_Lola_open.jpg

This clutch was designed for Queen Elizabeth II of England by London based designer Notting Hill, which is why this is known as "The Queen's Clutch". I can see her with this very classic frame but doesn't she always carry a little bag with a short top handle strap? I'm sure the strap was put in for her if she wanted it. Did you see that special on Oprah where they went behind the scenes preparing for a dinner at Buckingham Palace? They measured all the settings on the table and the chairs with sticks to make sure they were properly spaced apart (meanwhile at my house, I practically throw forks across the table at people). The Queen gets a specially prepared meal that is extra good. Why don't they make every meal extra special and good? I don't care though, I just want to be invited! The Queen's clutch is in black metallic but this lilac python is fresh and girly and pretty. The best part about this clutch though is not the fact that the Queen has it, cuz honestly, I don't exactly want to model my style after hers, I am in love with the interior coin holder! How ingenious, I now require all my clutches to have this super nifty center compartment. The clasp is topped off with Swarovski crystals for formal affairs but in lilac, you can definitely use this during the day. At LuxCouture for $1700.

Givenchy Camera Case - Way Overpriced!

I love Givenchy but even if you are a bank robber or if you just found a bag of money, this would still be a bad buy. This camera case encased in glass crystals is cute and kind of cool, it would be really fab if it were $200 (but as a camera case would still be steep). It is 5" x 8" which is too big for your average compact camera so this must be meant as a clutch of some sort, which only make the even more useless. The zipper goes all the way around the top and off the sides making it like a man bag, adding to the drawbacks. I am certain this was conceived during better economic times when success was measured by excess but now it's all about being savvy. If you found this at a thrift store for $10, you would be bragging to all your friends. "Showing off" is now all about how little you've spent to still be chic. Which is kind of exciting and challenging because it isn't really interesting just walking into the most expensive boutiques and throwing down a wad of cash to look good. If you bought this, you would almost be embarrassed to disclose the price, which is $3620, which I am still having a hard time digesting. At Barneys New York.

Bottega Veneta Python Flambe Clutch

bottegaveneta_pitoneflambe.png

I have been going to a lot of events lately so I am on a clutch fix. Like on Monday I went to a UNICEF fundraiser hosted by Nicole Richie. I was having one of those days - I banged up my new manicure as soon as it was done, when I got home I realized I had nothing to wear because the day before I decided to send everything to the dry cleaners and while doing my makeup I stabbed myself in the eye and all the tearing smeared the mascara so that I had to start over. I was a mess and obviously late by then but when I picked up my awesome YSL clutch and put on my Jimmy Choos, I knew I was OK. And that's the kind of clutch this python from Bottega would be. Whatever I'm wearing, this would pull it all together. As with all clutches these days, it's got to fit as much as a small day bag, which makes this clutch all the more alluring. There are 3 separate compartments inside and it is loose and unstructured so it will hold a lot. The asymmetry of the lines give additional oomph if the gold bronzey python isn't enough but it is still a great all around classic. At Bottega Veneta online for $4100. A slight ouch but this will stick around way pass any meltdown.

Dries Van Noten Check and Sequin Clutch

I'm always looking for anything that has the best of both worlds, it's a type of greed if you think about it but it's one that will save me from having to buy 2 things. And in this case, the combination makes it better! This check pattern with sequin panel clutch from Dries Van Noten bringing together boyfriend chic and glam rock is incredibly irresistible - I am loving both on their own but when put together, you've made a love struck girl! The sequin panel goes all the way from front to back. It's made me an emotional wreck so that I am no longer able to make a rational financial decision, as in, I am forgetting what credit card debt means at the end of the month and how to add and subtract income and expenses to figure out if I am able to buy this responsibility. You know, the things designers count on for the show to go on season after season. But you see, this clutch isn't going to set me back that much, it is silk with sequin so it is only $675. I can certainly fudge a thing or 2 this month to make this happen. Things aren't really that bad, right!? At Browns Fashion for $675 but watch out for duties and fees if you are buying outside of the EU.

Alexander McQueen Squeeze it Clutch

mqsqueeze.jpgClutches can get boring-- it's hard to come up with unique and edgy designs without bordering on the ridiculous!  The bow tie clutch silhouette has been done by many but none as cool as this one from Alexander McQueen.  I have to admit I used to sneak a cigarette here and there in my 20's because I stupidly thought it was glamorous and sexy to smoke.  Well McQueen has captured the glamour with the smoke effect is embroidered on to smooth black satin on this oversized clutch (40cm/16" wide!).  But the shape allows you to hold it comfortably in your hands so you don't have to cradle it like a baby.  I love the sleek bar hinge closure but don't worry, there are also hidden magnetic fastenings on each side so your things won't fall out.  Alexander McQueen Squeeze It Clutch $1,180 at Net-a-Porter.com

Prada Vit Mordore Buckle Clutch

prada_vitmordoreclutch.png

prada_vitmordore_buckle.pngBig giant chunky jewels are in in in! This over arching trend translates perfectly in this Prada clutch. I am surprised that I would like anything from Prada this season but this clutch stands out on its own and I am loving the dissension. The jeweled buckle is so out there, it reminds me of the surface of some alien planet. But best of all, this clutch does not say PRADA really big anywhere, in fact there are no logos anywhere! Woohoo!! It is a simple foldover clutch with just the right amount of oomph and you know what? That's all it takes to make me spend the $690. At Barneys New York.

Hermes Goodlock for good luck!

goodlockhermes.jpg Hermes hopes to bring us all a bit of good luck with its latest clutch, the Goodlock. Priced at $5,400, the understated calfskin clutch is expected to be the next waitlist inducing darling of the family. The color here is biscuit but it will be available in several colors including violine (my favorite Hermes color right now-- I just got a Kelly Long wallet in violine!). Call Craig at Hermes to order but please do not ask him about birkins as he will not take any birkin orders over the phone! 214-528-0197
