I have always thought that Frida Giannini carries herself with incredible panache and style, so I was happy to hear that, in celebrating of Gucci's Paragon flagship store that opened last week, the Singapore Tourism Board, in association with the Singapore Botanic Gardens, has bestowed upon the brand's creative director the "Paravanda Frida" orchid. Never one to rest of her laurels, however, Giannini has, in return, designed a special collection of exclusive items with 100% of proceeds benefitting the Mainly I Love Kids (MILK) charity inspired by said flower.

Available in March, the collection, available only in Singapore (sorry folks!) comprises a special Boston bag (of which 78 were made at approximately $903 US dollars) in white GG coated canvas featuring a hand painted version of the Paravanda Frida motif with the iconic Gucci web in pink and white and Gucci logo (meanwhile, 10 were made of a version with white crocodile handles); a wristlet in white GG coated canvas featuring a hand painted version of the Paravanda Frida motif and a cotton T-shirt featuring the Paravanda Frida motif styled in gray for men and white for women. The Boston bag is a classic Gucci shape--their equivalent to Louis Vuitton's Speedy, you could say--and the one bag that's been reinterpreted in countless versions and for a host of special occasions. All the bags in the special edition series have unique serial numbers embossed inside. Gucci also available here.

Whether or not this bag is for you, we should all be excited for the return of glam!! Feather and sequins!! What can be more decadent? Well, it's not like Valentino ever turned sensible but I cannot wait to see what they have in store for us once they pull out all the stops!! You cannot get a sense of the intricacy and details until close inspection but once you do you begin to appreciate the couture luxury and feel. Sure this is super fancy and a bit much for everyday but as a show piece you have to admit, it is pretty fabulous. I can't think of a better way to celebrate Chinese New Year this weekend than sharing the fabulous Chanel Paris-Shanghai collection with you! My grandmother grew up in Shanghai during the height of its glory in the 1920's and 1930's, or as she calls it-- the chicest city on earth (other than Paris, she will admit). Boy does she have great stories of her life as a young Shanghainese socialite (but I'm saving that for my book)! I'm certain she'd approve of Chanel's beautiful homage to her glorious hometown (great excuse for me to pick up several bags so I can show them to her!)-- starting with the adorable plexi and enamel Chinese doll clutch above. It's so exquisite and beautifully made that I will most likely have a glass case made to display it, taking it out for only the most special of occasions. The sparkling sequined classic flap bags below are also very Chinese, we love anything shiny and anything red-- especially for Chinese New Year (I wear red underwear during the entire 2 weeks of celebrations-- sorry, is that too much info?).

The Paris-Shanghai collection is coming soon to a CHANEL boutique near you! This is a special sneak preview for Bag Snob readers, I will have more info for you soon! Happy "Hu" Year everyone!

This bag registers so high on the style meter, it is redefining the word "chic"--literally. While on my myriad of Pre-Fall 2010 appointments (translation: the clothes that come out in July and August), I stopped in my tracks at YSL, whose accessories bowled me over. The divine chunky wedges aside, I was drawn to this vintage-inspired handbag. Stefano Pilati went military for pre-fall this year and this bag is the perfect complement to epaulettes, wide leg pants and belted jackets. Doesn't this bag look like something your mom carried when she was young? Who else is having a "Brady Bunch" moment? I love the saddle bag-esque shape of this bag and the antiquated hardware. Inside are roomy compartments that expand to accommodate your belongings. The "Y" insignia closure is also incorporated in a way that it's not garish whatsoever. While this bag also comes in suede, I love it in this leather version; it's rigid, durable and completely Marsha, Marsha, Marsha.

Price on request, available at YSL stores in mid-summer, www.ysl.com.

I can't remember the last time I was this excited about a Marc Jacobs bag, by either the diffusion line or the main one! Actually, I've never been excited by a Marc by Marc Jacobs bag. This Leola Hobo is the perfect mix of trendy playfulness and polished design. The zipper has undeniably replaced the studs this season but instead of randomly throwing zippers for the sake of the trend, this design incorporates it in an elegant asymmetrical style. $495 at Neiman Marcus.

Rihanna would be all over this clutch! As soon as I saw it, it reminded me of the thing she wore for her AMA performance. Take out all the gimmick and weirdness, it is actually a super cute clutch. It is hip and unique without being koo koo, and a white clutch is of course the easiest bag to use in the summer, even with a LBD. The only problem is the tiny size, I'm not used to these eensy teensy clutches anymore, at 8" by 5", it is barely bigger than my hand. If it weren't for the price, I would love to have this as a coin pouch, I can take just this out of my car with money, cards, phone and keys while running errands.
Peter Dundas is a seriously underappreciated talent. This former designer at Roberto Cavalli and Ungaro--now creative director of Emilio Pucci--has never let his passion for cutting-edge design be marred by trends or corporate restraint. The same can be said for the Marquise bag, his first bag (not to mention the only one launched with a name). While it was first introduced for resort, I think it's a fabulous bag for year-round use. It just reeks of seduction and aristo-rebel attitude but is elegant enough for dinner at Mr. Chow or Kaviar Kaspia. When Peter first showed this bag to me over coffee at the Mercer Hotel, he explained that it was named in homage to the Palazzo Pucci, infusing the luxe Florentine house with some indie rock n' roll spirit that only he could provide (I was just thrilled that nary was a colored swirl in sight!). Available in two sizes to suit all statures, the classic box shape is wrapped in black suede while a fully-lined canvas interior keeps the bag as light as can be. Sure, naysayers will note its similarity in style to Chanel or Lanvin bags, but check out those killer silver ring piercings that edge the entire bag! Break out the Balmain or Alaïa mini! The chain shoulder straps are great, too--perfect to wear as a normal handbag or across your body for a girl's night out. For the quintessential--not to mention updated--Pucci girl, this bag is right on target.

Small ($1,435) & large ($1,595) available at Pucci stores, Bergdorf Goodman and Neiman Marcus.

Ring lizard is my new obsession. You don't want to go too crazy with a ring lizard though, the natural patterns holds its own, so a simple flap with no hardware and a simple strap is just peachy perfect. The strap though is not typical, there is a solid lizard part that goes up to the shoulder but the actual shoulder part is black leather. Although you won't hold this in your hand, the shoulder part still gets a lot of action so it's good that it is not lizard. There is some interesting knotting going on where the strap attaches to the bag. These are just little touches that add design elements without obstructing the beauty of the skin. Jil Sander is a genius! Love her.
Pierre Hardy bags are like the schoolgirl equivalent of the high school cheerleader: cool, always in the know, sought after and, in this case, totally Snob-worthy. I honestly believe Mr. Hardy's designs--be it his shoes or bags--enjoy this underground cult following (the accessories version of a Skulls & Bone society). I like that, for spring, he branched out and went graphic with this black and white perspective cubes canvas tote with red leather trim. Yes, when I first saw this bag, my first thoughts were "picnic basket," but I've yet to see something this chic storing cold pasta at my local park. The wide straps--a Pierre Hardy signature--ensure a solid, hearty grip and fit be it over your shoulder or in your hand. I have the larger men's version (I fell in love with it when I saw it at Barneys several seasons ago) and needless to say, it's incredibly accommodating and can carry everything from magazines and newspapers to a complete workout attire (sneakers included). And let's face it: at $870, it's a comparative bargain in the designer market.

$870 available at Barneys New York, Pierre Hardy boutiques and www.pierrehardy.com

First of all, how cute is Cameron Diaz? Having interviewed and interacted with her in the past, I can say without a doubt she is one of the most perky, easy-going and multifaceted actresses in the industry. I've noticed that while she's fully embraced the relaxed, comfort-chic California vibe when it comes to dressing off-camera, it's all about her accessories. Nothing punches up humdrum tees, jeans and UGG boots than a punctuation mark in the form of a discreetly conspicuous handbag (yes, such a thing does exist). To wit, check out Chanel's Cocoon handbag (the one Lily Allen modeled in the Chanel campaign last fall), which Cameron was spotted sporting on a recent errand run. How much do you love that she chose a fiery red over boring black? Aside from a subtle CC logo emblazoned on the handle, nothing about this bag screams Chanel--which is to be appreciated in these economic times. Money aside, this lightweight nylon-and-lambskin bag, secured by a metal clasp on top, is as practical as it stylish: inner pockets galore, super soft handles, waterproof and easy to wipe down! (It also doubles as a fabulous pillow in case you were wondering). If Chanel made the Cocoon in a larger messenger style, it would be the perfect diaper bag. The best part? For those days you want a more subtle approach, the Cocoon fully reverses to a subdued navy with red trim.

When I first heard Akris designer Albert Kriemler was delving into the accessories world--having so masterfully conquered the art of tasteful dressing--I had my doubts. "Was it really necessary?" I thought. Having recently previewed and learned about the bags at the Swiss company's Manhattan showroom, the answer is a resounding yes. Not only does Daphne Guinness front the couture-like line in the current spring campaign, but Akris has really gone against the grain of trend in favor of expanding its heritage. In one way or another, the bags all incorporate nomadic Mongolian horsehair in ranging from the handle to a full façade courtesy of Comtesse, an 80-year-old German firm specializing in the manufacture of woven horse hair (no animals were hurt in the process, which is really comparable to getting a haircut). Akris is no stranger to the material: it's been used to line garments and coats and horsehair is even utilized in its stores worldwide.

What I appreciate most about the collection--which ranges from a "Mini Ai" evening bag with long jewel strap to the "Alba" top handle made of seamless horsehair, "Allegra" hobo, "Amata" clutches and "Ai" carryalls--is their lush, unadorned sentiments. I particularly like the "Amata" bag because of its sheer practicality: not only is the clutch frame detachable for convenient cleaning, but the larger version features a convertible version that snaps on just like that! Frumpy Swiss Misses stay away; with nary a logo in sight save for the subliminal "A-shaped" hardware or the quilted trapezoidal pattern available on select models, they're a must-have for the ladies who love Jil Sander, Balenciaga and Yohji Yamamoto. What's more, for pre-fall, Akris is experimenting with new fabrics like Dalmatian and cashmere. Simply put: these bag are something to yodel about.

The collection ranges from $2,000 to $7,000 and is available at Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue and Akris boutiques

I have this bag in python and now looking at the crocodile I wish I got it in croc!!! But I love love love my python, it is the only bag I've had in years that I use continuously for weeks at a time without changing (except for clutches at evening functions). It is gorgeous, I can wear it with anything and it fits all of my things beautifully - for once I can answer my phone on time and find my keys without fishing around, every time!! In croc, it has all the same function and it is even more luscious and luxurious. The shape conforms perfectly to the body, the loosely twisted straps give it interest and stays on the shoulder, the size is large but the bag is lightweight (even in croc it is very light but of course python is lighter) and there are serious organizational pockets galore inside - zipper pocket with a medium loose patch pocket on the same side (where I put my keys), the other side has a large patch pocket for your smart phone with 2 slim pockets for either pens (actually, don't ever put pens in your nice bag) or lip gloss (I put lip glosses in both). If there is such a thing as the perfect bag, this one would come very very close!!
Delicate simplicity has become terribly underrated in the frenzy that is the accessories market. That said, I was refreshed to see that Roger Vivier's Carla bag--first seen on the arm of its namesake First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy--has made its way from the French brand's outré-expensive couture line into the ready-to-wear collection for spring. Ladies, universal appeal this bag does not have (it gravitates toward a professional, elegant woman--age notwithstanding) but those who do find themselves armed with this framed bag will undoubtedly want to channel a modern version of Jackie-O and her trademark pillbox hats. This bag, available in small and large sizes, won't fit much (its dainty leather strap practically guarantees that), but then again, with your driver in tow--and women who carry this bag almost always will--you won't need to. I'm particularly attracted to the bag's slim buckle on the front--a quintessential emblem of the brand--while in back, the profile of the buckle appears subliminal (sewn in, one could say). Available in a wild range of textures, from uber-chic pony skin & crocodile to garnet-red washed leather or black patent, go ahead and pick a color: your Prince Charming awaits.

Small: $1,725-$13,100; Large: $2,525-$13,100, available at Roger Vivier boutiques

This clutch reminds me a bit of the Prisme from Roger Vivier but not so much where I'd accuse it of being a total copy so let's just say it's 'inspired' by the geometric shape that Vivier is known for. It's a cute little thing but I'm a bit perplexed by the price of it. I've paid $1,298 for a Leger dress in the past but I'm not convinced the brand known solely for its skintight bandage dresses can get away with charging four figures for a 4" suede clutch covered in crystals. Yes, it's made of pale gray suede-- beautiful as it sounds, sweating hands clutching it will not be a pretty sight. Herve Leger Crystal Clutch here $1,298

I'm sorry, did someone say Graceland? That's where this giant doily bag belongs, on a table where Elvis used to eat his fried banana/peanut butter sandwiches. Valentino has been on a roll lately with slob bags-- the latest, the Laceland tote, is made of lasercut leather with layers of lace and eyelet detailing. I don't mind lace but there are three too many layers on this bag for me and it is way too fussy what with all the ruching on top of the lace and handles. I vaguely recall owning a dress like this when I was 7 years old. It had layers upon layers of eyelet lace and a super flounciness that I loved. Clearly my taste has evolved. What about you, do you snob it or slob it? Valentino Laceland Tote $3,495

Is it just me, or are jewelry houses itching to get a share of the multi-billion dollar pie that is the handbag industry? Not many Place Vendôme jewelers have had success with their attempts into the category--Cartier's stylish Marcello is the one exception it seems--but Bulgari may have something on its hands. I recently checked out their new Chandra bag line--which Julianne Moore is featured prominently with in Bulgari's spring campaign--while up at the showroom and I'm impressed. I particularly love the leather-and-chevron-canvas version (pictured here) available in two sizes, both of which can slip over the shoulder or the latter, which features a shoulder strap. The leather is smooth yet sturdy, the canvas makes it incredibly lightweight and it sports just enough subtle accent hardware to make a statement. The bag, which also features discreet adjustable straps on either side, closes with a top spring lock and has two c onvenient inner pockets. Its most prominent feature, however, is the flap-over leather buckle with two affixed Bulgari light gold dials (reminiscent of the brand's iconic Bulgari Bulgari watch) on full display. Take this on your next Roman holiday!

Beyoncé Knowles, unlike most women, has it easy when it comes to shopping for the man in her life. The solution? Get him a backpack. Hubby Jay-Z is rarely spotted without some incarnation of a Louis Vuitton backpack; he last sported an oversized Monogram "Christopher" backpack and now seems to have upgraded in a grandiose way. The rap impresario was snapped by paparazzi exiting the Crillon Hotel in Paris with Vuitton's ostrich skin backpack (retail price: $24,900) in hand. The rare piece, straight off the men's Spring 2010 runway, features a nifty built-in towel holder at the base (perhaps he'll utilize it in St. Tropez soon), but it's the easy-access handle design that I appreciate most. Backpacks were spotted all over at the recent Fall 2010 men's shows in Milan and Paris, hinting that the hand's free trend is making its way over from the women's side. This bag--which, in my opinion, best suits a man with presence and attitude, not to mention the height to pull it off--allows the user the versatility to be hand's free or to conveniently carry it as luggage (notice the practical side handle and double-zipper pockets), easily accommodating a weekend's worth of necessities. It features easy-access buckles, roomy pockets within and a drawstring closure to keep your valuables secure. Backpacks are no longer relegated to pre-adolescents! The category, too, has grown up! What's more, the ostrich, as much as I can't help but think of pimples, is a softer and less expensive alternative to alligator--proving that even music moguls are capable of "downsizing."

Sorry for the three-peat on top handled messenger bags in 24 hours but everywhere I turn, there is yet another style so I feel compelled to comment. The latest is the Faithful tote from Alexander McQueen-- I adore McQueen but not really feeling this bag for some reason. The overall design is cool but the proportions of the straps are too small and feel like an afterthought. As in, hum, everyone else is sticking straps on (and yes YSL brought back the look first) so we should, too. And with so much going on, the zippers and unique stitching get lost in the shuffle. And really, do we need a giant Q in the middle of the flap? Alexander McQueen Medium Faithful Tote $1,450

If you're cool like that, you will rock this Derek Lam hobo like nobody's business. But make sure you're really that cool because you need a bit of bad ass in you to make this work. Derek has said that the Derek Lam girl is "mysterious, a bit naughty, sexy and flirtatious, and she lives for her cocktails!". This is a quote from an interview we did with him in April 2008, and boy has he remained true to himself because that just about sums it up for this bag. The only thing you can predict about the girl with this bag is that her cocktail is strong and definitely NOT fruity! I must have this for Fashion Week NY!
It's fairly clear to me who inspired the knock off but I'm going to give both brands a fair trial here and open this up for discussion. Before you guys go off, however, here's my two cents:

Proenza Schouler launched its PS1 bag line back in 2008 and quickly became one of the most sought after bags for the fashion forward set. In the last few seasons, the duo at Proenza have showed the PS1 silhouette in everything from quilted leather to python (to die! Just saw a turquoise python today at 4510) and single handedly jump started the recent messenger bag craze. Needless to say, there is a strong argument for PS bags being the inspiration.

In Mulberry's case, the boxy shaped flap tote has been a mainstay for the brand for many years so it does make sense they'd decide to tweak on the Bayswater with a top handle and two straps, or does it? Mulberry is definitely the more established bag brand here, which makes it a shame that they'd resort to copying a designer who is new to the arena. But then, I'm not judging... or am I?

Both bags are around 12"-13" wide and 9" high. Not much difference in the price, either. $1,595 for the Proenza Schouler PS1 Medium Satchel and $1,150 for the Mulberry Alexa Leather Bag

Now, what say you, my snobs? Who copied who?

I debated even putting such a scary bag on our nice and pretty site but I need to make a comment about this whole obsession with vampires and zombies. Am I the only one here who finds the subject distasteful? Annoyingly, those obsessed will argue that vampires and zombies are in fact 2 separate subject matters. Whatever. I can't even watch horror movie previews but that's just me. I just don't understand why anyone would want this dreadful face on a bag! Bags are supposed to make you happy, jubilant and passionate not scared.
When Karl Lagerfeld erected a Chanel barn for his spring fashion show--complete with haystacks and reclaimed wood--I knew he had something pastoral up his sleeve. While I may not have agreed with his choice of shoes (clogs anyone?), the bags are a completely different story. I love the playful take on classic Chanel bags refashioned and crocheted with raffia, ribbon and fabric flowers. This "Coco Country" top handle bag, however, is both on-trend and ladylike. The ladies-who-lunch set from Hong Kong to Boston will snap this bag up for sure (if they can get their hands on the few pieces produced). It's by no means a lightweight piece; the sturdy woven raffia ensures this structured bag keeps its shape while swallowing all your daily essentials. A nice twist? Chanel's classic quilted leather used in the handles and CC charm and also to rim the bag's opening. My only qualm with this bag, and with many of Chanel's seasonal bags, is exactly that: seasonal. Beyond this spring, this bag may soon seem passé. But its eye candy factor will continue unchanged.

Recently, we were interviewed by a magazine (can't say who it is yet, article hasn't come out) and asked what the Must Have bags for 2010 are. This Fendi City Hobo with zipper details is one of them, hands down without a doubt, this bag is going to be huge. It probably won't show up on every editorial layout but this is the easy to use trend piece that will sell. As we transition out of studs (euphemism for sick and tired of), we are still needing bold hardware details and Fendi strikes it hot here. The hobo is already a mighty functional shape but add in those 2 large outer pockets and you got yourself a bag you can live out of.
Sure this bag is hideous, but what you don't know is, you can be transported Back To The Future with the built in flux capacitor. Imagine all the things you can do, like buy Birkins before prices hit 5 figures, collect the original Chanel 2.55 and of course, sell your shares of PPR before Tom Ford took off. I thought Gucci was finally going in the right direction with their back to basics collection but this could be a positive sign for the economy, people are starting to buy impractical and over the top bags again with exorbitant price tags.
More proof that Kate Moss is the ultimate product spokeswoman. In perhaps what was one of the most well-guarded design secrets in fashion history, the supermodel finally stepped out with the grainy cognac-colored leather "Gloucester" bag she designed for Longchamp, the company she has been the face of for the past nine seasons (the brand reopens their Madison Avenue flagship this spring). My first reaction was that this bag isn't going to win any design awards for innovation; I feel like I've seen this style from Michael Kors, not to mention a slew of indie contemporary labels available at any Bloomingdale's. In fact, the only panache this bag offers is the fact that Miss Moss had a say in its design (if that even matters to you). Sure, it's certainly roomy and the interior is lined in a snazzy zebra print (not to mention a small label bearing Moss's name); but at the end of the day, the buckles are pure vanity, the leather zipper tassel looks cheap and the bag is outrageously overpriced--proving, as has been the case with Moss her entire modeling life, it's more about who you are and what you wear with this bag than anything else. FYI: this small capsule collection of handbags also includes a faux-shagreen clutch with a concealed chain called the Soho, which she mentions in an interview in the February issue of Vogue. "I am not into trophy bags," Moss says. "The coolest ones never look trendy." Guess she retired her many Birkins.
