Getting into Character: The Five Essentials for Lady Mary
By Bag Snob Tina on January 4, 2013 12:00 pm Tina Craig

Getting into Character

Downton Abbey is back on PBS this Sunday, and I can’t wait! My biggest burning question – will Lady Mary and Matthew really get married?? What will she wear for the wedding? As early 20th century British aristocrats, the star-crossed couple is always dressed to the nines. And with this season kicking off the 1920s, the period costumes are only going to get better (they’ve already won an Emmy, so I don’t know how, but tune in!). Mary has a headstrong personality yet very feminine style – her bags would reflect that balance. She’s the kind of lady (I mean, Lady) who wants to go out shooting with the men during the day, and then dress in fine couture for dinner. Her fashion and that of all the upstairs characters is a mix of their affluent countryside lifestyle and the trends popular in London. Much like the royals today, Mary manages to dress sensibly but fabulously. Here are her five essentials for life at Downton Abbey:

What British aristocrat doesn’t have at least a little Burberry? The textured suede on this olive-colored Prorsum tote and the gold owl adornment are nice nods to Mary’s outdoorsy sensibility.

Mary visited London from time to time before her scandalous affair broke news in the capital, and maybe with some good luck, she can go back soon. This Bottega Veneta weekender would be the perfect size for all of her necessities. But honestly, why would you ever want to travel when you live in a manor like Downton?

Camels and browns make a lot of appearances on the show, so this Fendi top handle is the perfect vintage cocktail. Doesn’t hurt that it’s made out of eel.

You don’t see the heiresses of Downton toting much more than clutches on the series (they have all those servants to carry their things), but I’m sure Narciso’s trendy use of colorblocking on the Bauletto Bag would win Mary over.

Getting into Character

The ladies upstairs at Downton sport delicate, beaded clothes and accessories, so this Roaring ‘20s style beaded and fringed Club Monaco clutch would be right up their alley.
