Almost six years ago, Sang A introduced the Flash clutch. This season, under a newly appointed Hedi Slimane, the rebranded Saint Laurent introduces its Diagonale clutch. Look familiar? I probably don’t have to tell you the sole difference between the two is some textured skin and the illustrious name of a half-century-old fashion house.
Sure, one could argue that this is the current state of fashion: reworked concepts and creations, passed on from one designer to another, inspired by each other with very little originality. If I were Sang A Im-Propp, I would be dismayed by this copycat design. I already am! I expected a lot more from the debut of Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent, especially after all the hype, the move to LA, and the name-change. He needs to reveal his personal vision, pronto.
