The longtime favorite has some competition coming around the corner because I smell another bestseller from Proenza Schouler, set for Pre-Spring 2013. Or should I say chart-topper? Proenza bags possess a rare combination: I adore their anonymous simplicity, yet they are always instantly recognizable for those in the know. The Record has the shiny gleam of a fresh new album, along with a hint of retro flavor, but it’s the hardware that’s the standout here. The striking carabiner closure is one-part tough stuff, two-parts sophistication. Smooth black calfskin is an obvious choice to wear with everything, but I’m loving the red-and-black houndstooth for the Spring/Summer seasons – because it’s so unexpected. Just like the loud rock records I used to spin in my bedroom, this newbie makes one thing clear: The rule is, there are no rules.
