For the last few decades, matching your bag (and shoes) to your dress was considered old-fashioned and unimaginative. Thanks to the likes of rebel-rousers like Kate Moss and Chloe Sevigny, it has been all about clashing and breaking rules for as long as I can remember. It’s time for a change.
Judging from the runways of Milan Fashion Week, the days of intentional mismatching are over (at least temporarily). Taking a cue from our mothers in the ‘60s, everything coordinated is fresh and modern again. I am completely on board with this trend; suddenly, it feels so right to look so pulled-together.
My absolute favorite look from MFW: Gucci’s print-on-print snakeskin. At once polished and subversive, it’s very late-‘70s Sharon Stone in Casino. But it’s Etro‘s sequined number, sprinkled with colorful stones, that is the most eye catching. Etro is emerging as a strong contender in accessories, long-gone is that stale, old paisley. (I say that now, but in a few years I may be exclaiming it the ultimate. Such is the fickle cycle of fashion.) In its place, sleek stripes and high-voltage beading. Other standouts: Moschino’s mirrored plates and snappy stripes, grommeted neon at Versus, and decadent sparkle a la Fendi. So no matter what you end up buying next season, just remember: match it up!
