Kate Spade Catches Me Off-Guard: Surprises in Spades
By Bag Snob Tina on August 13, 2012 9:00 am Tina Craig

I once said to a friend (who is now an editor at a well-known fashion publication) that a Kate Spade bag would never see the light of day on my blog. I guess it’s time to eat my words! What is going on over there? In last couple of years, the brand has been utterly transformed. These days each time I pass a Kate Spade boutique or display, I stop and consider buying a bag, a pair of shoes, or a dress (which is precisely what I did recently).

Now I’m ogling all over again. Their Brushstroke clutch ($348) is a stroke of genius, whether you have any artistic inclination or not. The true-to-life paintbrush handle perfectly balances this whimsical clutch without bordering on the ridiculous.

That’s not all: a collaboration with Garance Dore yields more allure. Her fashion-illustration prints are capriciously Parisian, just like the blogger herself. The Massie shoulder style ($348) and everyday tote ($198) are both finished with 14-karat gold-plated hardware…Did I mention I really need a pair of polka-dot Licorice pumps, too?

I agree with you. I’ve had my ups and downs with Kate Spade myself – going through a phase where I loved the bags and then not liking them at all. I’m back to liking them and even have considered using a KS bag I have from circa 2004 (this one: http://followgram.me/i/257058325555335400_185664627 ). One of the items on my wish list is The Importance of Being Earnest clutch. Hey, it’s $325 or something like that…compare that to Olympia Le-Tan’s $1500+ “book” clutches.

How can you not like Kate Spade, with their classic shapes and mix of bold and neutral colors? I own several of their bags and they are well made, beautiful, and affordable. Definitely a great price point for frugal snobs.
