Design inspiration comes from all over, and one of Derek Lam’s most frequently credited muses? Fashion photographers. If you peek in his office (which I did a few months ago), the walls are covered with intriguing photo prints. He often cites the mysterious mind of Guy Bourdin as a primary influencer of his work, but now it looks like fellow seventies-era wild child Helmut Newton is also providing fuel…via the aptly named Newton bag.
In black lizard with a gold racing stripe, it is one of those bags that stop you dead in your tracks when you see it (or in my case, fingers frozen in mid-air while internet-surfing). Much like the effect of Helmut’s own shockingly sexy photographs. And it’s pretty damn hot in burgundy, too. It is so like Derek to glamorize the most utilitarian of bags: the camera. That’s what I love about him: he produces jaw-dropping intensity that feels effortless. Looks like he and Helmut have more than a few things in common. At Derek Lam for $1,390-$4,450.
