Just in time for prime picnicking season, it’s the battle of the basket bags! Naturally, Hermès’ sweet, springtime adaptation of the Kelly is any bag snob’s park-and-field dream. Released last year and topped with a barenia leather flap, it’s got all the chic fixings of the classic Kelly, lightened up with impeccably woven wicker and touches of whipstitching. Retail is over $10,000 but resellers have it listed at over $20,000 for its rarity and collectible status.
But alas, inducting the Picnic Kelly into your own collection is unlikely. Thank goodness for Mark Cross! His Manray satchel doesn’t skimp on capriciously luxe details – hand-woven, brass closure, Italian cotton-twill lining, and oh yes, crocodile trimming – and while it’s still an investment piece, it can easily make a welcome addition to your wardrobe. And to your new gingham smock dress (if you don’t have one, well, now you have a good excuse for a shopping spree!).
