Pom poms: festive when it comes to football games, less so if you’re talking designer clutches. Matthew Williamson is the go-to guy for whimsical prints, color combinations, and flowing vacation-wear – I own several of his jackets and they are perfectly fun. But when it comes to bags, I’m a tougher customer.
And when I spy a bag adorned with the same furry pom poms as the ones that adorned some of my third-grade socks and sweaters, I lose the urge to indulge in Williamson’s sense of caprice. I am all for DIY (let the creative juices flow!), but this oversized suede clutch takes the “crafting” concept a bit too far, no? Especially at this price, which is a far cry from your local arts and crafts store.
The layers of beads and sequins? Reminiscent of an Indian marketplace and actually, quite lovely. But the workmanship is drowned out by all those fuzzy little balls. I’m left wondering if this was created with a straight face or if it’s meant as a joke. If it’s, in fact, in jest, then laugh on! So what do you think of it: Snob or Slob? On Net-a-Porter for $1,325.

hideous! I pass his store in meatpacking daily and never see a soul in there.
Slob. If it’s meant to be in jest, for $1325, I’m not laughing! Not even the Net-a-porter styling could save it. There used to be a show on television in Canada called ‘Just Like Mom’ – the last event was always the kids making something (think chocolate chip cookies) but they didn’t follow a recipe, they just put in EVERYTHING – think corn flakes and ketchup – and the moms had to taste all the nasty concotions and figure out with one their kid made. Change chocolate chip cookies to a clutch and there you have this monstrosity.
This bag reminds me of the trim on my grandmother’s drapes! What happens when the little pom-poms start to fall off? I typically love Matthew Williamson but this has to be my least favorite MW creation!
It kind of looks like an arts&crafts project gone horribly wrong in third grade!
