Top 5 Animal-Prints Gone Wrong: Cuddly and Not So Cute

Not all animal-print bags make the grade. Far from it. Some furry, fuzzy, and even feral satchels take a savage turn into all out tackiness. While this selection of wild things might look adorable on the arms of Betty Rubble (I did always like her jewel-topped mini-dress), when it comes to our purposes, they should have stayed buried down with the fossils. I’m all for supporting endangered species, but this genre of kooky bags needs to go extinct!

1) Casadei Mina Canadian Red Fox Bag: This bold little burst of fur might actually be more suited for little Pebbles than mom Wilma. I’m all for a cozy bag every now and then, but this tiger-print fox-fur looks like it truly belongs in caveman times. Inquire at Casadei, $1,900.

2) Il Bisonte Limited Edition Calfskin Shoulder Bag: So the right hippie-rocker chick could possibly make this work, but she would have to be a legit nomad to give this overly rugged cow-print any credibility. For most of us, it will just look we got lost on safari for a few weeks too long. On Luisa Via Roma for $301.

3) Marc by Marc Jacobs Fur Twist-Lock Clutch: Faux fur has never looked so brutal! This animal print is mysterious – and a little too hairy for comfort – but what’s puts this one over the edge is the coiled mouse engraved on the closure. Reaching for that every time I need to get something? No, thanks! On Ssense for $300.

4) Elena Ghisellini Lara Mumasky Fur and Nappa Top-Handle: Technically, print is only incorporated through the Davy Crokett-esque ’coon tail, but an addition like that is enough for this bag to make the list. The ill-placed, almost vulgar pelt of raccoon fur adorning the front only makes matters more grisly. On Luisa Via Roma for $1,754.

5) Roberto Cavalli Diva Python and Calf-Hair Shoulder Bag: Sometimes divas try too hard to be fabulous, and that’s the very problem with this piece of exotic overkill. Zebra-stripy calf-hair, brown python, and too-fussy hardware make for a luxury bag that looks anything but elegant. On Net-a-Porter for $1,925.

  1. I love these bags –furry yet structured. I’m definitely not a fan of the puff-ball looking purses.

  2. Certainly agree. Just horrendous! I think the designers are desperate for new ideas.

A bit too trendy for me!

  4. ‘Bistonte’ should be spelled ‘bisonte’ in the bag photo caption

  5. These just seem so violent. Who wants to be reminded of fresh kill in a handbag? YIKES.
