Theyskens’ Theory Anen Flap Bags: At Crisscross Purposes
By Bag Snob Kelly
November 18, 2011

It looks like Olivier Theyskens and his team at Theory (I know it’s old news by now, but I’m still loving the fact that this fluidly wearable collaboration exists in the first place!) have found their trademark. Hey, if it works, stick with it right? Those crisscrossing straps, breaking up the main cross-body strap, make for a novel surprise. Their take on the messenger bag feels fresh, lighthearted, and possesses just enough detailed pizzazz to bring interest to simplistic silhouettes.

Last year, it was midnight-blue pony hair and airy sprinklings of sequins. This season, the demurely sized messenger (the medium flap style is only 7.5” by 11”, while the small is a petite 5” by 8”) gets a light, earthy makeover in natural woven linen. In squeaky-slick black leather ($425), framing the edges and bringing emphasis to the multiple straps, the raw fabric gets a strong, city-assertive contrast. It’s a little mod, a little serious. But how different does this bag look in neon-pink piping ($325)?! Not only has the color changed, so has the whole persona. The hue is so fluorescent, this bag glows with playful flavor. Suddenly, the Anen has taken a very frisky turn. A perfect way to inject a mega-bright into your look without making a solid commitment.

Pair with: As different as these fraternal twin bags are, they would both look polished and unexpected with a Degas ballerina-esque dress, also by Theyskens’ Theory. With a jersey tank top and wrinkled tulle skirt (lined with tap pants), it’s a casual-femme mix that can handle a messenger style. On ShopBop for $985.
