In the four short years since Stuart Vevers became the Creative Director at Loewe (after leaving Mulberry), he has delivered one hit after another and revolutionized the Madrid-based luxury house. After viewing the Spring/Summer 2012 collection, Vevers is fast becoming one of my favorite bag designers.
Last year’s versatile May bag has been copied by many, and history is sure to repeat with their latest crop. For Spring, both form and function are set to trump at Loewe, which is often referred to as the Hermès of Spain.
From the roomy and just slightly slouchy Granada hobo (in varying sizes) to the pert and structured Celeste to the stylishly boxy Cordoba, the skins are luxe and the colors are irresistible. Think touchable, pebbly calfskin in shades of midnight-blue, chalk-white, and slate-gray. Exotics like lizard, crocodile, and iguana are done justice, and Loewe’s suedes look as rich as I’ve ever seen any. It’s all about the leathers and craftsmanship, but it’s also about high-fashion – the refreshing perforation and whipstitched details on the Granada hobos drive the point home. Function is also a big player. Each of the hobo bags come with an interior pouch in a contrasting shade of butterwort lambskin, to be used as a clutch or organizer. Far beyond the famed Amazona, Loewe is proving they have the chops to produce a delicious assortment of bags and clutches.
