Judith Leiber at the Met Costume Institute Gala: A Hands-On Experience

For fashion’s grandest night, the red carpet’s most glammed-up and well-manicured hands grasped show-stopping clutches by Judith Leiber.

Rihanna brought her typical atypical glamour, via a boldly asymmetrical gown and striking red braid, to her glittering “Sevilla” clutch in Jet. Just when you thought Gwyneth Paltrow couldn’t look sparkle any brighter in sequin Stella McCartney, her cut-corner rectangle “Palladium” clutch caught your eye. Ashley Olsen‘s “Capri” Flip Top in Champagne Multi brought needed hard edges to her voluminous sleeves, while Lauren Bush debuted her charity collaboration with Leiber, the “Feed 1000″ clutch to raise money for the FEED Foundation. Finally, the “Guilloche” minaudière in Antique Silver added the final touch of radiance to Ashley Greene‘s brilliant look.

My favorites of the night? Two very different looks on two very different girls. Jessica Stam‘s “Hardy Candy” minaudière was the perfect finishing touch to her ballerina princess look. Mary Kate brought her usual vintage-chic to her “Tessen” in Siam, managing to make a sparkly minaudière look hip and cool. (Jump for celeb images!)

“Hard Candy” Blush Pink Octagonal Minaudière, $1,995.

“Capri” Flip Top Diagonal-Cut Mother-of-Pearl Minaudière, $1,595.

“Sevilla” Soft Crystal Trapezoidal Clutch, $2,995.

“Feed 1000″ Beaded Linen Clutch at Bergdorf Goodman for $495.

Judith Leiber is so over. Ever since the firm was sold, the bags are rather conventional and

Dull. I own 6 original Leibers from 15-20 years ago when they were witty, well crafted and

    Very original.

Are you willing to part w/ any of those beauties [LOL]? Seriously… I agree w/ you wholeheartedly!!! I remember spotting my first Leiber years ago when I was employed as a paraprofessional for a top audit/consulting firm. Attending one of the many shindigs we held throughout the year; one of our clients held a bright sparkling tomato in her right hand as she entered the Temple of Dendur [Metropolitan Museum in NY]– Yes… A tomato– But it was the most GORGEOUS tomato I’d ever seen… Thanks Bagobsessed for jarring one of my fondest memories.
