The Mulberry Tillie + Spring 2011 Bags

As you saw from the exclusive detail shot this morning, the Mulberry “TILLIE” bag is a key bag for Mulberry’s SS11 collection, it’s made of butter soft leather with touches of iconic Mulberry detailing, including a new detail– belt strap locks with intricately designed ‘trompe l’oeil’ metal closures.  You must see this bag in person to feel how soft it is and how slouchy it hangs on the shoulder!  The top handle actually lays flat and fairly undetectable until you need it and the leather wrapped chain is detachable.  The most interesting news of the season, however, is that Mulberry will no longer use python skin this season.  In its place is an innovative snake embossed calf leather, which was seen all over the poolside runway at the Mulberry presentation this afternoon.  Inspired by Gray Gardens, Hill showed a breathtaking and whimsical ready to wear collection in addition to new bags to the Alexa group.  Alexa fans worldwide will now be able to get their Alexa fix via Alexa shoulder bags in different sizes, Alexa Bengal Tiger printed Haircalf satchels, and Alexa clutches– all in varying shades and skins!  Check Mulberry.com for details in the upcoming months.  (Jump to see more photos from the presentation at the Soho house)

Sitting poolside waiting for the Mulberry Spring 2011 Presentation on a beautiful sunny day made me with it was Spring 2011 right now!

These chain style bags are very Chanel-y, think of it as the cheeky British interpretation of the timeless bag style.

You can choose from the chic satchel-style TILLIE, or the new Runway styles: DRAWSTRING SHOULDER and SMALL DRAWSTRING MESSENGER with chain detail, all shown in a range of covetable leathers including luxurious Bengal Tiger Haircalf (to die!) and the new leather, Silky Snake Print’.

I wish they had done something like this for the Target collection! I’m coveting everything.

personally i think its actually quite ugly, i dont really understand the hardware, its like a spoof of their tooled leather bags that they had one season. its looks aged and not as fun loving as the alexa which i feel embodies the brand more..what do the people at bagsnob feel about the bag?

its weird how a brand says that they will stop using snake skin but will continue to use pony hair and leather and other exotic skins…dont these skins belong to an animal too? the efforts to be animal friendly feels shortchanged and very half hearted.

perhaps take a cue from Stella McCartney if the brand really wants to change. or perhaps the choice of not doing snake skin is purely economical?

I am loving the printed calf hair alexa in one of pics..the bag embodies the fun spirit of the brand and what is it trying to achieve!

I don’t mind the Tillie, but with all the hardware and chain strap (even if is detachable), it might be quite heavy, no??

Oh no no no, the tiger print in fuchsia is hideous!

they are all hideous. Mulberry bags have been awful for years, ever since they moved away from classic and simple designs and started trying to be ‘trendy’ (and failing miserably). such a shame, I used to love them and still love the bag and weekend bag I have from the good ol’ days…

I’m surprised the Bagsnobs would like any of these tacky bags, especially the Chanel rip-off, oops I mean ‘interpretation’. just terrible.

I agree with you statement but I think there is a difference between exotic skins and regular leather. Cow hide, whether calf hair (pony hair is the same) or leather is all coming from slaugther houses, meaning that the animals are foremost killed for their meat and that leather is a by-product. I completely agree that they should stop using exotic skins and not just snake skin but frankly, as long as people eat meat, there will be hide from those animals.

These are definitely more whimsical than I would expect from Mulberry!

I’m not a huge fan of it either. The Alexa and Bayswater are okay but the Tillie just looks like a mishmash of too many random components.

not really feeling it. it’s basically the sister of the alexa. same kind of style–messenger, two buckle snap closure but different hardware.

I would have to see this in person. But I am glad to read of Emma’s commitment to not using python, have you seen the PETA videos? Really disgusting how they kill them. I am not hypocrite but cow skin is a by product of meat we eat so I feel slightly better using it though I still think cotton hemp is the way to go for most animal friendly and environmentally responsible.

It should have stayed hidden. This is the first time I’ve been to this site two days in a row since early 2008. Again, a snob going on about the beauty of a Mulberry bag. It makes me wonder if someone here is on the Mulberry payroll. This bag and the Alexa are horrible copies of the PS1.

I have removed this site from my favorites. There was a time when you could depend on the snobs for honest critiques, but those days are long gone. They appear to have sold out.

I went to the Mulberrry show and they didn’t give me a seat. I was happy to stand just to be there because I truly like the brand. If there was some special relationship, they would have at least given me a spot where I could have gotten a better view of the bags.

We have never been paid to say we like a bag. We have never even met the Mulberry designer and there is no special relationship there. Their PR just asked if we’d like a sneak preview and I thought our Mulberry fans would like the scoop on the latest bag.

We report on bags, it’s what we do. if you didn’t see it here first you’d have seen it elsewhere.

I’m really not keen on the snakeprint leather. I think it cheapens the look of the bag as a whole. I do, however, like the trompe l’oeil fastenings. They’re really cute.

I’ve seen the Tillie bag in “plain” leather – black with gold hardware and a regular leather strap, also camel (tan) with the same. It works as a nice everyday casual bag in that configuration – looks like a cool urban “book bag”. Tarting it up with fancy skins and chains ruins it completely.

FWIW, in Switzerland (at the Jelmoli department store) the Tillie sells for about 1500 Sfr in the plain leather. Of course, for that price, you could pop down to fabulous Foxtown, pick up a Prada leather tote AND a Ferragamo bag AND a Missoni bathrobe (to curl up in while you flip through Vogue or watch FTV). And then head over to Lugano and admire your new purchases while relaxing with prosecco and gelato at a lakeside cafe :-)

For those that can afford it the Ostrich Tillie retails for a cool £ 3500…that’s UK Sterling…..yikes !

I prefer the overside Tillie bags to the small, dinky ones although I did spot a gorgeous powder blue Tillie on one shopping trip !
