Eco (and Wallet) Friendly Birkin?!? Or Totally Illegal?
By Bag Snob Tina on June 10, 2010 8:08 am Tina Craig

birkin_canvas.jpg

I came across these funny canvas tote bags (re-usable shoppers) on my friend Charlotte’s Facebook profile– she found them at a store in Taipei and scooped up ten of them (we are all now jockeying to get ourselves one but they are backordered until August– apparently they can only print 6 per hour). While I support re-usable grocery/shopping totes, I’m wondering about the legality of blatantly printing a birkin image on canvas. I personally think it’s cute and cheeky, but Hermes is a bit sensitive to this sort of thing and probably would not see the humor in it as I do. Seeing that it costs a mere $45, however, I doubt it will cause too much of a ruckus. What do you think of the eco-friendly “Birkin”?

My friend with her new Pink Canvas “Birkin” bag. Current three month waitlist, seriously?!?!? LOL!

Quirky and fun but if someone was copying my product I would not really like it even at only $45!

We have a family business that has been going for 145 years so an awful lot of generations of our family have worked hard to build our brand and reputation and to have someone make a few bucks off the back of our hard work is not right.

P.S. Tina & Kelly congrats on shoe snob! I did post a comment a few days ago on the Brian Atwood post but it hasnt shown up yet….not sure what went wrong there was no submitting a letter when posting on the other snob sites?!

Even though I would totally rock one, I do think it’s copyright infringement… If I worked for Hermes (or even owned an Hermes), I probably wouldn’t stand for it.

Hi! I love these bags. I understand the offense, especially considering Hermes are handmade. However, I would love to buy one. Its not like it blatantly reads Hermes across the front. Will you post or let us know how to purchase these bags, if possible?

    Thanks!

I find myself saying, “how clever, I want one.” But, I also find something very intersting things about these photo canvas totes…People who get the hype of this canvas or wanting to have one…they are not only it is just a Birkin wannabe but also they have a real birkin sit galmorously in their closet too. I will be so tempted to buy one for fun!!

I think they’re super cute, but I bet Hermes will slap a cease and desist on the company before I ever manage to get my hands on one.

Fascinating! Personally I think it strengthens – the already unsurpassed- brand. It would surely make me wanting to go grossery shopping. Please get me one…!

It’s not like something will mistake thing for a real Birkin… therefore it wouldn’t be illegal! I say go for it ;) Fashion should be fun, not serious =D

Agreed. A picture of a Birkin is not infringement. I think they’re fun!

  21. Anna on June 13, 2010 at 12:34 am said:

I think it’s fun. Hermes doesn’t own a copyright for humour and the holier than thou attitudes regarding the birkin are ridiculous. It’s about time someone poked fun at the bag that has, even Jane Birkin has said so, given its namesake hand soreness.

  22. Andi Lia on June 13, 2010 at 3:12 am said:

As a crafter, I understand Hermes’ point of view, but as a shopper, I’ll go crazy for the fun & cuteness of these totes. It’d probably best for both producers to work together, for the sake of the customers.

I vaguely remember that Hermes shut down the ‘Jelly Kelly’ trend a few years ago, though this is arguably a more obvious parody. This is funny in the same way that the cheap-looking LV plaid plastic shoppers were – the high/low irony hints that you’re in on the joke that a $7000-ish price tag for a handbag is slightly absurd (even if you’re comfortable paying it.) Hermes may not be entirely humorless, though; they did have a paper cut-out Kelly pattern up on the web site awhile ago, but to be fair that might’ve been intended more as an earnest tribute.
