Marc Jacobs Ash and Salome Fur
By Bag Snob Kelly

Why didn’t anyone carry these at the Met Gala? Well, size aside, it’s because these bags are just gross. I know, Man Snob Jim and I are at odds here over Marc Jacobs. Marc can be great but obviously as seen here, he is not beyond reproach. The bowler style, Ash, looks like a giant bull testicle. The bottom where the fur comes to a point is particularly disturbing. The bag is 100% beaver but the price of $3895 is 100% bull. To be fair though, the actual shape of the bag is cute, and it does come in leather. The Salome for $2995 is not as unsettling but definitely uglier. The fur buffet of goat, fox and raccoon looks like a moppy cartoon monster. It has inspired me to start a new movement called, PATA, People for the Aesthetic Treatment of Animals. (PETA, this is just a joke, please don’t flood my inbox with Cease and Desist threats).

    Dear Kelly,

I have question to ask and will appreciate if you can answer me.

I just purchased a Sergio Rossi alligator clutch. It came without any authentic or certified card that this is made of alligator skin. How can I tell or prove to people that this is a alligator bag not the embossed one?

    Thank you for your help!

    Grace

I usually like fur, but there`s something about this that would make me think twice before wearing it. I`d say it`s a bit too much

Bag Snob Kelly — thank you for calling it like you see it! I think Marc Jacobs is a GOD, but I just can’t tolerate the look of these. They’d even be ugly in Aspen.

I love MJ. My collection consists of nothing but his bags, but I don’t particularly care for a lot of the bags from F/W. Many of them are fur, exotic leathers and over-done details with ridiculous price tags. I wasn’t very impressed with the bags that came down the runway. The clothing on the other hand, was truly breath taking. It’s the first season I’m more interested in the clothes than the bags. I can’t imagine anyone carrying these bags and seriously pulling them off.

why constantly mock people that care about animal causes (PETA is no good), or make light of the fact that these bags, do in fact, take a few lives to construct. Just wonderin’

Overall, Great blog, great commentary, keep up the good work!

Consider all the torture those poor animals got to go through before their fur reached MJ’s office…this is a complete waste of their pain…

Sigh..it is bad enough that people still buy fur..it is worse when designers create such a ugly piece of crap with it..

If you mean the box clutch I featured recently:

    http://www.bagsnob.com/2010/04/sergio_rossi_embossed_box_clut.html

This is definitely embossed leather and NOT croc. I don’t think Sergio Rossi has any real croc in this season’s collection.

    Sorry =(

HUGE fan of Marc Jacobs right here, but these bags are heinous. Why would he do this? Such a waste of perfectly good fur.

i have no doubt that there are many stylish women who would do justice to these bags. just because they’re not to your taste doesn’t disqualify them from looking good on others.

I don’t get people who like fur on their handbags!! or otherwise!!

    Are you crazy?!!

There are some really pathetic people in this world, ready to kill an innocent animal for a stupid handbag?

And some guy who kills a pet(dog/cat) is an animal while killing wild animals for their fur is totally fashion?

    Disgusting!

I am not saying I like these but they push the envelope and i think its about time. I am sick of seeing the same patent, snake, leather bags. Hello, BORING.

p.s. these remind me of Patricia Paccinini’s relativity. There is just something quasi-human about these bags. Well of course there is, they are made of beaver.

THEY MADE THOSE BAGS OUT OF REAL ANIMAL FUR??!?!? HAVE THEY LOST THEIR MINDS?!?? Wow, I can’t belive how stupid they became. It is PURE 100% stupid that we kill beautiful animals for stuff like bags and coats. And if they don’t stop killing animals for stuff like bags, I hope a tiger eats them someday. Then they’ll learn their lesson from there.
