Lady Gaga + Spiked Hermes Birkin

gag_birkin_spikes.jpgOur friend ButtercupD sent us this link to Gaga’s latest bag, a spiked Hermes birkin. Many speculated whether this was a “special order” or the work of Gaga– I give my vote to Gaga. Remember when she took her sharpie to the white clemence birkin last month??? Why wouldn’t she start bedazzling and embellishing with studs as well!?!?

Have to admit I am slightly annoyed now. An impromptu hand written note on one’s birkin is one thing (and forgivable!) but planning press releases is quite another.

As for the birkin, it looks a bit painful for my taste.  Notice how Gaga is carrying it a good 12 inches away from her body for fear of being stabbed, LOL!

What do you think?

It might come in handy during a subway ride. ;-)

I think this is Lady Gaga’s own creation. The studs look like they were haphazardly glue-gunned one drunken night. Sloppy, sloppy work indeed!

  3. Beg dia, duit dia, hak dia. Biar jelah dia nak buat apa!

  4. I agree with Bonnie, definitely Gaga’s work… there’s no alignment no pattern… this is what happens when Birkin’s fall into the wrong hands.

    That’s just wrong.

Gaga’s work. How terribly, terribly wrong is this. I think she should hand over her remaining Birkins to me, before she damages them as well, lol

Ugh! Definitely Gaga. I would be afraid to snag my outfit or worse. How would you explain that to your Doctor? I was impaled by my handbag. A waste of a good bag.

Oh silly gals. Look, the bag is her’s. It was rightfully purchased by her with the money she earned. That would give her entitlement to do whatever the hell she wants to do with it. Complaining about how irresponsible she treats a bag (which probably wasn’t expensive at all for her) does completely nothing.

Lighten up Archer. We know that she’s entitled to do what she wants with her bag.

Anyway, she did it herself. Why would Hermes, or any designer, destroy such beautiful, supple leather?

  11. Honestly, I like the counterpoint of the edgy spikes and the uber classic and ladylike Birkin. It’s unexpected, hip and so Gaga who is always on the cutting edge of fashion – literally, in the case of this handbag.

I partially agree, this is what Gaga is about but it could have been done so much cooler, I am sure Hermes wouldn’t mind making her a studded bag, after all they created that obscene purple monster for Pharrell Williams couple of years ago. Hermes can be cool and edgy: collier de chien has to be one of the coolest cuffs around and it’s been created by one of the classiest brands. It’s the DIY bit that killed this bag for me.

The bag is a reflection of her and her talents. All show with no substance or understanding of what real talent is.

I’m sure Hermes appreciates the free press.

She is a cheap version of Madonna. Trying to shock people….with no talent. At least Madonna has talent!!! The back is revolting…how can you do this to a bag of such beauty. All done to show her sense of creativity….this is NOT creative!!!!!

I totally agree the white bag seemed fun and spur of the moment.

This look at me, while I hold this bag far away from me.

I like how she defaces these objects that are so highly revered. That’s right, I said objects. It is after all just a bag that people are swooning over. This is her way of saying that sort of idolatry doesn’t affect her. I know this may be reaching a bit, but I see it as her version of Mapplethorpe’s crucifix in urine.

SAD :( I hate it even worse because I have yet to purchase my own Birkin.

  19. lastnametea on said:

I like that the studs are random… If they were aligned I think it would make the bag look boring…

  20. I wanna cry for hermes….I dont know what else to say.

Oh michelle, you so don’t know what you’re talking about. Madonna is an entertainer…she cannot even sing – she just pretends to play a guitar during her concerts. The GaGa is an artist, she can sing, she’s a classically trained pianist, and DAMN, her music rocks As much as I love Madonna, she knows she has now been replaced and her time is over…

  22. debbie on said:

Aside from all this, she needs to spend some money on her teeth. Does she have a huge overbite, or what?

  23. michelle on said:

Madonna has 25 years of experience….no talent…I don’t think so. She would have been gone a LONG time ago if she had no talent. I agree that Madonna’s time is coming to an end and it is time for new artists to come forward. BTW…love your blogs!!

although it`s Hermes, and I like some of their handbags and although it`s so spacious I could even love it, I cannot.

    too much, way too vulgar

  26. I can’t believe all the fashion snobs out there. Who fricken cares what the hell she does to her bag, she bought it, she ca do whatever she wants with it. And personally, I think that both bags look improved upon, who wants a plain bag? Not me. I’d buy them that way.

  27. Linda on said:

To quote my mother, who has impeccable taste, “Not a fine looking ensemble at all!” If she want to take on a permanant, “stay away”, frightening persona, then a spiked Birkin is appropriate. But then, why destroy the look of a classic looking bag?- To make what kind of point exactly?

It suits her. I like her music but I wouldn’t put her in the same class (for lack of a better word) as Madonna. If she reinvents herself every year for the next quarter of a century then yes. For now, no!

    I <3 Gaga.

  31. whatever, her bag she does as she pleases….

  32. Austin on said:

I completely agree! No one else has a right to say anything about it. It is her bag and she could have cut it in half and no one should say anything. It’s her money, her bag, and prerogative!

  33. Elena on said:

Well, at least she has imagination, something clearly lacking here…

congrats on your mother having impeccable taste, but this is gaga, fyi.

Go GaGa!!!!!! She is all about the freedom of creativity. With the talent to back it up. I think she should spike CHANEL next. Maybe send one of those flap bags through an acid wash or something. I’m all for it. Brands should be too. Because only the most confident brands have NO PROBLEM with any of this. Neither should bag snobs. Unless of course they really are snobs.

on what planet does hermes need press at all? :)

  38. Clara on said:

Hey. This is not an expensive bag. She did not pay a penny for it. It was a gift from Hermes to make all of us comment about it, even to criticize it. Very clever of Hermes, no wonder why they are unique. Of course they made only one because no one would buy something like that and it only suits one person in this world.

  39. that must be a topic cause this happened in GaGa

  40. Chrissy on said:

I really do agree Gaga probably didn’t pay a penny for this bag. Hermes like most designers probably gave her this for free and Gaga had it customized. I love designer bags as much as the next girl but like someone said earlier, it’s an object. I like the studs because it suits Gaga. It’s like someone tying a pink scarf around their bag or putting those like purse charms on it. You make the bag yours.

  41. She does not pay a penny which is why you’ll see her wearing about 10 versions of it in NO TIME! Still, I love how unconventional she is. She took a classic, overpriced bag and made it her own. I love the roughness too!

  42. I agree with Chrissy, make this bag your own bag. Even if I paid 12k for it, it’s mine and if I want to paint it green, so what? This is not a painting, its a bag and we should be able to express ourselves with it.
