Memorial Weekend tote: Hermes Picotin Lock

picotin_lock_bj.jpg

Last fall I purchased a Picotin Lock tote from Hermes in Graphite and it has become my weekend “knock around” tote. Granted, the Picotin bag is unlined (thus the ‘lower’ price point for Hermes) but you can not beat its large bucket style (not to mention the durability of Hermes leather and handstitching) when you need to throw bottles of water, snacks, toys, magazines, yet still look semi-chic. The Picotin Lock has several sizes but I prefer the GM (this is the medium size– Kelly got a bigger), it even holds a bottle of Pinot Grigio for a picnic with friends! You can also get the original Picotin without a lock but it’s not as cute plus the heaviness of the big lock help keep the open tote semi-closed. I love traveling with it, too as it may be squished, folded and stuffed without damage. It’s not perfect, though. The square bottom makes it hard to carry on my shoulder but it’s fine in the crook of the arm or handheld. This weekend I’ll be pulling out my Picotin lock for fun in the sun with family and friends!

  1. Beautiful bag, but anything with an open top is not too practical for those of us who live in cities and travel via public transportation. I’d be afraid to carry it on the subway in rush hour with anything the slightest bit valuable in it. But it’s a beauty and that color is perfect for summer.

I first looked at this bag last year and remember this size as $2450. Have Hermes prices really gone up this much?

  3. I do love the color and style, but the price is OMG!

@Jenn, I think I got mine for $2700… which is a couple of hundred dollars less than its current price. There are few things in life one can count on: Taxes, Death and Hermes price hikes.

If I remember correctly from my last Hermes purchase, I think the price fluctuations may also have something to do with exchange rates. If the dollar weakens against the Euro, then the US pricing will go up. If only the same effect happened in reverse! ;-)
