Stella McCartney Wooden Accordion Clutch Bag

Once in a while, I throw all my bag rules out the window and just revel in the greatness of a spectacularly executed bag.  I’ve been mesmerized by this strange yet stella_wooden_clutch.jpgappealing wooden clutch from Stella for two days now and the more I look at it, the more I’m loving the creative use of natural wood element in a bag without resorting to yet another heavy wooden box clutch.  Though not a classic beauty, this is a true work of art and I applaud Stella for her unwavering dedication to ethical fashion.  There is a satin pouch included but I would use the skeletal bag without it.  Of course you’d have to be very careful with the size of things you put in there but having a few loose items will really show off the design.  It’s not a small bag at 10″ wide so the chain is recommended to use with it, I imagine this would be quite awkward to carry in hand.  Its only pitfall is the very hefty price but it sold out at Net-a-porter within hours so I guess price matters not when something really moves you.  Stella McCartney Wooden Accordion Clutch Bag for $2,045  (Or call the Stella McCartney boutique 212-255-1556)

This is one of the ugliest handbags I have ever seen. I have been staring at it trying to see what people would find beautiful about it, and I can’t. I would burn this if someone gave it to me…its made of wood after all.

If it’s sold out, I can only figure that there was only 1 in stock. Ridiculous waste of money.

I can’t understand the adoration about this bag. This is an exact copie of a folding bamboo handbag in Japan 1970′s.

There is one in the bag museum in Amsterdam, Holland (www.tassenmuseum.nl) if you would like to see.

  6. love it , what an original design

My girlfriend and I have one of these that we found in Cincinnati, OH for $1. Comparing the one we have with the one pictured above, it appears that the bamboo strips of the “bag” in question have perhaps been touched-up with a dark wood stain. Also, the clasp is different–perhaps because the traditional handles have been removed and a chain strap has been attached. Finally, the other difference is that our version obviously has no inner bag, as the one pictured was undoubtedly added by the current seller.

To say that this item is impractical as a bag is an understatement. Our handled-basket is 9″ x 12″ x 9″ (W x L x H). If the one pictured is 10″ wide, I would feel bad for anyone trying to carry it. Then again, practical people don’t purchase a basket for $2045 and call it a purse.

  9. It’s gorgeous, but I’m all about practicality when it comes to handbags! :)

I saw this bag(?)on another handbag website, and I still don’t get it. The bag looks like MINI BLINDS!

What a complete and colossal waste of good money. The person who bought the handbag on Net-a-Porter would have done more good to flush the money down the toilet.

  11. :O that is crazy cool!!

Kind of trippy to look at though

    great blog!

    stop by some time xx

  12. This bag is incredible. It’s so rare to find a sartorial piece that is truly unique – and this one is!

Actually this bag goes back to America late 1940′s Noted as a concertina cane basket. You can find a pic in the book Handbags by Anna Johnson.
