Comeback of Backpacks: Snob or Slob?

One of my first designer bags was a Prada nylon backpack. I remember thinking I was just the coolest girl in school with it (how I cringe now when I look at it!). I haven't sported a backpack since (making it through High School and college by carrying my books in various handbags probably is one of the major reasons I'm now 24 with serious back pains!), but I feel a wave of backpacks coming our way. Isaac Mizrahi just showed some handbags-turned-backpacks (lined with fur!) on the runway which you can watch here and celebs from Kanye West to Jay-Z have been rocking them on the streets. For those going for the geeky-chic look I could see the backpack working or for reasons of convenience (ie they're useful for lugging around groceries), but aside from not at all being my style, isn't it really easy for someone to steal from you if you're wearing a backpack (or is that just the born-and-raised Manhattan-ite in me being overly weary?).

What do you think about backpacks? Snob or Slob?

I Like them. They are ubiquitous here in Germany because they are so practical. I bought a Tumi one last fall and LOVE it. I am in love with the new Vuitton taiga ltd ed. one but at 3000€+, no hope for me!

  • These are just another way for Goyard and LV to make money. What businessman would wear a backpack to work? After this season, LV will never make those backpacks again - who the hell needs an LV ostritch backpack for 24K except Jay-Z anyway? Would anyone but Nick Cannon, Usher, Kanye, or Jay-Z carry a backpack around?

  • I am impressed that you had a Prada backpack in middle school as I was stuck with Jansport. I don't think I am a fan of the backpack. There are times when it makes sense but as a daily carryall? Not so chic.

  • There are lots of men who like to carry backpacks. My husband being one of them.He is a professional athlete and needs something to carry his playbook ,wallet and other personal belongings in and would not be seen with a manbag.

  • Well I can tell you that my mom was a big Jansport/Kipling on a wheel-y pusher...part of me wishes I had listened to her!

  • I am not a fan of the backpack once you are out of high school. I am a law student and I always have my laptop and at least one gigantic textbook, plus odds and ends in my shoulder-bag, so I'm not just critiquing them from a position where I wouldn't even need one. They just seem sloppy to me.

  • I'm a longtime backpack user. When the zipper broke on my Jansport, I sent it back and carried my Betseyville tote for a few weeks. My back was so glad to get the bckpack back. I'll probably never permanently return to purses.

  • I think backpacks are cute and functional, but I'm not really into them for myself.

  • I think backpacks are for children and European backpacking trips. I do realize that they're highly functional, especially for those with shoulder/back problems; but, if it's an issue of taste and style, please pass me my briefcase while I send little Johnny to school with his backpack.

Plenty of professional business men here were them. They are better for your back and I think easier to manage in an urban environment. This is Germany though and people use public transport and bikes more than in the US...

As welcome a comeback as Freddie Krueger. What's Kanye got in there anyway (CDs for sale?)

  • As a frequent business traveler I love my sleek new Tumi backpack. It's just the right size for a woman, and a very stylish and comfortable way to carry your laptop and accessories. I stopped carrying my Tumi laptop briefcase and I have no regrets and much less shoulder pain. I have not seen a designer backpack that looks as professional as my Tumi. LV and Goyard backpacks don't look professional at all.

  • Backpacks are completely UNDERRATED! There is a market oppty here! So many women nowadays have thousands of things to juggle - on the road and at home. I say "SHACKLES OFF" and GO BACKPACKS! I just need to design the fashion designer versions of those ugly BLACK male-looking camping gear. :)

I saw a great range of leather backpacks and handbag turn backpacks during New York fashion week for very reasonable prices.
check out Wendy Nichols gorgeous expresso coloured leather backpacks with leather stitching. Decent size backpacks for yoga kit or study books
BOYY has really fun handbags that can be worn on the back like a backpack. Perfect for the geekchic look!
