Donna Karan Eldridge Tote

eldridgetop.jpg I don't know about you, but I love when a designer thinks outside the box when it comes to marketing. Take Donna Karan, whose current website homepage features a short entitled "Four Play" featuring Christina Ricci directed by Jake Sumner (yes, that would be the son of Sting and Trudie Styler). Ricci is featured in four different scenes that revolve around the designer's versatile Eldridge bag: the dreamer, the paramour, the expressionist and the voyeur--perhaps all apropos descriptions of bag buyers. As cute and cheeky as Ricci is, the spotlight here is undoubtedly on the sensuous pleated calfskin leather carry-all, which can be worn four ways thanks to its convertible strap and snap buttons: cross-body messenger, open tote, buttoned-up bucket, or buttoned-down pochette. I usually despise one too many buttons, but they're subtle here in the aim of creating a true hobo-like look. As Karan, whose bags I feel are underrated, says herself, "For the Bohemian who still wants her polish." Speaking of which, the gunmetal diamond pendant elegantly tied to the strap is chic enough to make me want to resurrect my Prada robot tchotchkes from seasons past.

Jim is this your first Article on Bag Snob!!! Again WELCOME!!! I completely understand that the bag is fun and edgy!! But, the only thing I have with it is the price!!! Though I think if you have the funds I think it could definitely be an investment piece, since it is convertible!!!!

  • Welcome to BagSnob, Jim! I like your writing style (and I'm a fellow writer myself ;-) ) and I look forward to reading your entries.

Regarding this bag...I have mixed feelings. On one hand, it's so NOT my style, so I would never be tempted to buy it, but on the other hand it's the first Donna Karan bag that has caught my attention so far as being...well, mildly cute.

  • I understand that there is big money in bags, sheos, etc. However, not everyone can run out and make a bag that everyone wants. Versace never gets it right and they charge so much for their bags that one has to wonder who the is buying them except for Britney when she's crazy. This bag is a huge improvement for her but I don't think it's worth the money at all. I don't understand why the new starting point for bags is $1K- earn some cred first!!

Not feeling this bag at all. It looks like a big black blob. It doesn't hang well either. I agree with the previous poster. A Donna Karan handbag does not warrant the price.

    • I'm in agreement on the black blob comment (reminds me of the comment about the Chanel Cabas looking like a big garbage bag). I tend to prefer my bags with a bit of structure and this doesn't seem to have much. It might look better IRL, but I can't imagine it being worth the price.

  • I would need to see the bag in person. I do like the idea that it could be carried different ways. OMG, I still have my Prada Robot too. Welcome to Bag Snob.

  • Jim, what a great blog. It is refreshing to read the way you write, and that you actually know what you are talking about. I was beginning to get miffed by this site, but now you are blogging, I will keep coming back. Great stuff.

  • Don’t forget the things you once you owned. Treasure the things youcan’t get. Don't give up the things that belong to you and keep thoselost things in memory
