Mary Kate with Vintage Hermes and Chanel Coco Cabas because two bags are better than one
By Bag Snob Tina on December 22, 2009 9:00 am Tina Craig

mk cabas hermes.jpg

I was not a fan of the Chanel Oversized Coco Cabas bag and MK has proven my point that it looks like a giant trash bag.  No idea why one needs to carry two bags at the same time but I suppose it is better than, like, one bag.  I do love her vintage Hermes Kelly though, nice and worn– the way they look best.  My friend, the Comtesse de Chilly, tells me her mother used to stomp on her new Hermes bags (back in the ’60s in Paris) so they’d look old as opposed to nouveau (as in riche).  I don’t need to go that far, I have a 5 year old and he drags my Hermes bag across floors, sidewalks, and golf courses so I’m all covered there.  I don’t mind scratches or dings on my bags, though.  Each one has a treasured memory, like the time I opened the back door of my car and my son decided to kick my birkin as hard as he could on to the sidewalk (he was only 20 months and discovering the art of kicking balls with his father), he clapped and shouted ‘yay, touchdown’.  The bag was fine, but the lock has a huge scratch on it– I can’t wait to til he has kids so they can return the favor one day with his things (kidding!).

What do you think looks better?  Old or new?

Distressed is better, but not tattered. It’s a fine art and fine line to achieve.

Love my vintage Kellys. I love the mellow look of the leather, after a few years. I hate the look that screams new. Hermes at any age means class!

I enjoy both the old and new bag looks. Shiny and new is fun and the bag will mellow with age. It’s all good.

In general, I don´t like vintage bags, especially not, if they show marks of use. I want my bags new, and try to handle them with care, so that they age nicely. I think that picture of this Mary Kate looks sad.

I like the look of well worn bags but not ratty tatty like MK.

With my Hermes bags, they look great with age, and every bag with a mark on it that is attached to a story like the one with your son is a mark that makes the bag more special. With seasonal bags that I buy though, I prefer them to always look fresh.

Love the look of this picture. had she not carry that oversize Chanel cabas bag, the look would be incomplete.
