Louis Vuitton Sequin: Snob or Slob?

Don't crucify me for featuring Louis Vuitton monogram bags, I'm just the messenger-- this showed up in my inbox and had to share! Wow, did they really bedazzle each logo with sequins?  Imagine the labor... I'm tired just thinking about it.  The Speedy Gold above is $2,160 (hefty!) and love the new handles. The Alma Eclipse ($2,470) in black sequins is quite eye catching.  You have to admit they are getting really creative with the iconic monogram. MJ said he was inspired by Parisian muses of great creators.

"... The Victorie de Castellane, the Loulou de la Falaise, the Betty Catroux... all these people that I remember that were just about the joy of getting dressed. The joy of being a woman, the joy of being a girl, the rebellion of saying "I don't care what's going on, "I'm just going to have a good time. Maybe it's a little Marie Antoinette too."

Marc Jacobs played with fabric on the bags just as he did with the RTW (which I'm obsessed with by the way, LV ready to wear is friggin' hot!). What do you think of the Speedy Gold Sequin? Snob or Slob? (Update: just added the Alma Eclipse, what do ya think?)

I love this handbag! I think that it is very much a step in the right direction for Louis Vuitton. What would be gorgeous is if they made this same style of handbag with the sequins in the Monogram Multicoloure or Monogram Aquarelle! I think that this bag has a beautiful "Haute Couture" element to it with all of the hand-sewn sequins!

  • snob, i love the sequins!

  • When I first saw it, I thought SLOB all the way. However, after you pointed out the new handles and the inspiration for the bag, it grew on me. The handles are fab, and the glittery monogram is soo...3 dimensional! Very creative bag.

  • slob-black handles with silver hardware and brown leather with gold sequins? I don't think so. whatever the inspiration behind this bag was it's still a mess. Good idea but poor execution.

I see your point Lina but I think the black handles bring out the black piping and the silver is purposely contrasted with the gold.

Completely Agree with you, Lina. Nothing on this bag makes any sense. It's a mess and egregiously expensive.

I am a long time collector of Vuitton bags, I think it unfair to call this collection ugly. It has a lot more thought put in it than most bags out there, as evident by the new handle and strategic shadow placement of the handstitched sequins.

        Snob, I love it

  • Love love love the new handles! Not too sure about the sequins tho.

  • the black alma is gorgeous! snob
not as into the gold, agree with Lina

  • slob and let's not pretend like sequined monogram is something new...one word...fendi!

  • Its hard to see the details from just the pictures. I will have to go into the LV store here in Seattle and check it out. Always interesting to see what they are up to. Living in Seattle, we are just starting to get some fashion...LV has been here for a few years and NM is coming soon.

  • i honestly have no idea what to think about this....

  • what is with the silver and gold? okay i finally made up my mind.....SLOB! :]

  • I like the handles but not the bag.

what were they thinking? gold and silver? it's just too gaudy, jarring and over the top.

  • uglyyyyy

  • OK, now when I saw a picture of this bag I hated it. I tend to dislike anything with LV's all over it anyway. But, I have to admit in person (at the showroom) I actually rather liked it. I hate to admit it, but I will. Nobody was more shocked than me. Will I buy it? No. But if it were given to me I'd carry it. Then again, once I see it on the arm of Brooke Logan or someone like that, I will probably hate it. It does look better in person than in the pictures.

    So I'm saying "Snobby Slob"...I can't commit ;)

Inarguably SLOB. It looks like a counterfeit LV bag.

  • Epic Fail!

A glittery excuse to try and make the logo relevant.

LV should stop making these ridiculous renditions and reinventions of the monogram and start focusing on the actual BAG.

The bags in the Spring 2010 mens collection were absolutely fab, so what's with this atrocity?

Louis Vuittons aesthetic values are so fragmented these days; much of what comes out looks as though it could belong to a multitude of different labels.

Nothing annoys me more than severe fragmentation and contradictory design values within a single brand.

It appears as a pathetic attempt to reach a broader market; inevitably destroying the vision, credibility, and snob value.

Unfornately, I think the LV brand has suffered because of conterfeits and a certain element of people, who have taken over the brand. I have several LV bags , one was designed by Azzedine Alaia for Louis Vuitton, during an Anniversary of the brand. I believe it was 2000. It is amazing. Anyway I think these bags are interesting. I would like to see them in person. They look pretty over the top. Not exactly understated elegance. I think Marc Jacobs is a genius, but don't always like his designs. I do think his safety pin Stam, is cool for his Marc Jacobs line.

I don't think this bag is for me but I see how it could appeal to others in the market.

  • Sorry, not liking these at all.

The silver rounds on the handles look like handcuffs....the handles have an edgy rocker-chick feel that does not coalesce with the prim look of either of the bags....mixing these 2 styles isn't working here at all.

Mickali sums it all up very well!

  • Can't wait to see the Chinatown NYC knock-offs! ;-)

  • The giant gold hardware for the zipper really bugs me. I can see how the Alma can sort of work into an outfit in a rocker chic sense but the Speedy? It looks like something designer imposter warehouses would create on their own merit.

    It all looks so... Busy.

Saw these bags in person at the LV trunk show in Las Vegas this past weekend - GORGEOUS. The bags look amazing in person- the pics do not do the bags justice - I put my name on the list and am crossing my fingers I get one! Even the husband is in love.

    Congratulations on another LV disaster!!

There's brown, black, gold, silver AND sequins on 1 bag....negatory. For that price point, Bottega Veneta, Nancy Gonzalez, Prada, Fendi or Lanvin...not sequins and not LV.

Definitely designed for the BRATZ dolls....barff

Absurd. Monogram is much to showy. An utter lacking of refinement!
