The scoop on Gerard Darel
By Bag Snob Tina on March 26, 2009 9:00 am Tina Craig

Are you so pissed that you can’t walk into a store and buy as many Gerard Darel bags as you’d like? The French would like to keep it that way, for a while longer anyway (because this summer you’ll be able to find GD bags and clothes at Bloomingdales!). You’ve been asking me the scoop behind the brand so here it is. Eva Longoria was introduced to Gerard Darel by her mother-in-law, who is best friends with the owner of the brand. The two French ladies took Eva to lunch in Beverly Hills a few years ago when she was first dating Tony and asked if she’d help market the brand. She took one look at the amazingly chic bags and said “uh, yeah!”. So there you have it, the power of celeb made this French chain (it’s like BCBG in Paris and on every street corner) one of the most coveted bags in America. Except Americans can’t buy it readily, yet.  Our friend Sari at Lux Couture managed to place in an order during her last trip to Paris– check out the 24 hour and Midday bags here.  And Shop Rumour will be stocking many new items soon.

So there, that is the scoop. I’ll keep you posted on the arrival of the GD python bags. Until then, read it and weep– check out Jessica Alba’s fabulous natural python version (I am kicking myself for not getting that one when I was in Paris, it’s softer than my metallic python and 30% cheaper).

Hi Tina-I like your metallic bag better than this one. The Gerard Darel pearls look pretty on Lux Couture. I have been wanting to purchase a Chanel pearl necklace. Tina do you have an opinion on either a Chanel pearl necklace or the Gerard Darel pearl necklace?

I don´t understand the craze over the GD bag over there in the states. Is it because it´s something you can´t get so easily, is it the design, or the affordability ? Maybe a mix of all three ?

    Lori,

Chanel pearls are fabulous but more common. Gerard Darel pearls are edgy and cool– and not seen as much. I’d go for the GD pearls on luxcouture :)

I’ve picked up a couple of the leather versions of the “24″ on my last two Paris trips, and get beaucoup des compliments each time I carry them. They are simple and chic, and hold up well. Gals who like a lot of interior organization will be disappointed, but I’ve learned to use pouchettes inside for my small stuff. Three years after buying my first one, I still love these bags!

I am with you Mette, I don’t get it. Personally, I am not crazy about the design or quality. I think the “craze” has a lot to do with its limited availability, Hollywood fashionista marketing and then maybe the affordability. I would venture to say that once they become widely available, its appeal level will be similar to such labels as Botkier or Kooba…

Thanks for torturing me Tina!!!! =)

I’m sure Lottie will be pleased to finally hear about the GD/Eva story…

I really LOVE this one that JA is carrying.

Next to the one you got I want this one as well!!! Cant wait to see what Shoprumor has!!!!

    Thx for the info….

    xoxo

Mette and Gail are both right. Like Tina stated, Gerard Darel is on every corner here in Paris and in every mall in France. I’ve never bought one because the quality isn’t really that great and stuff would just be swimming around in the soft bottom. A real Parisian hipster would probably buy a Zadig & Voltaire or Jerome Dreyfuss or one of many other bag brands that you find mainly in Europe.

I wanted to let you know that you can ship the bags. I fell in love with a Gerard Darel bag (can’t remember the name, 24 hour black quilted one) a few years ago and my husband had it shipped from a Paris store to Canada for me. Such a sweetie!

Also, there is a Gerard Darel store in Montreal, Quebec, Canada if you live near the area!

Eeeh. I was super excited after seeing the many posts on bagsnob. But I actually found a good selection at a local boutique (in NYC), and wasn’t impressed by the quality and craftmanship on both the leather and the python bags.

I’d rather save my money for a more expensive and unique quality bag.

For the price point the GD bags are great but it’s double the price in the US compared to France.

I say buy it in Paris for a bargain

I soooooooo LOVE the GD bags…… and the clothes are great they look great and you can go either way (dress or casual) with alot of the pieces. For me the bigger the bag the better i always end up with “kid” stuff in my bags. I’ve been lurking around this site forever and i love it here at least I know Im not alone in my bag obsession.

I have one of these bags and was able to order it through a shop in seattle called Clutch. The owner was great about working with me to get the bag and I love it.

I am french/american and currently live in Paris and can i just say that G Darel bags are a true sign of unoriginality in paris. every other woman is wearing one, just as Vanessa Bruno bags (which is popular from 12yrs old to 60yrs old, cant figure out how…)

Fashionable, stylish french women wouldn’t be caught dead with either bag.

I am from France and have lived in the New York City for a while. I need to correct a mistake in this article:Gérard Darel IS NOT like BCBG in France; nothing in common…

It’s nice to have this website and share info on it bags, but it’s better if what’s on here is true…

Tina, some of your readers travel and know these brands beyond the fad, the “it” effect…
