Be & D Garbo Studded Tote: The original returns!

quincebe&d.jpgbedblack.jpg

I remember the first time I saw the Be & D Garbo studded tote in brown and gold, it was 5 years ago– before we started Bag Snob. I was flipping through the pages of US magazine and saw it on a young star. I stopped at the page and stared at it for a very long time, wondering if I should go hunt it down. I ended up not getting it because I was pregnant at the time and had diaper bags to shop for. Flash forward to SS ’09 where runways abound with studs, studs, and more studs. Not that the studded look is anything new but who really re-launched this punk rockin’ style? I have to hand it to Be & D designers Be Inthavong and Steve Dumain! The iconic Garbo bag ($1,390) has been revived by the duo for Spring 2009, along with a few new friends (belts, clutches and wallets anyone?). I am in love with the quince color (upper left) with nickle hardware, it’s to die!

i bought the original in tan with brown when i was only 14….very reluctant to bring it back out

  5. OMG Tina—This is the bag I emailed you about a couple months ago! I have it in the soft pink and also in the pumpkin-ish color-LOVE them both–actually just pulled them out of my closet a couple weeks ago!!!! bought them prob about 4 1/2 years ago or so…

    xoxo

  6. These look like the cheaper version of the Sonia Rykiel bags that have been around for so long. The look is cool, but the bags are heavy. You carry it a few times, and then it’s “oh, there’s the gal with the stud bag”.

  7. I was just going to say this is a rip off of Sonia Rykiel from eons ago when I ready your comment. The first time I was in Paris was in 1993 and almost bought a SR studded bag but didn’t. Years later, I bought a SR studded bag with SWARSKOVSKI crystals as studs on a blue bag which still get compliments whenever I take it out. With respect to the metal studs, the cheap ones on the street is not that much different from these. I do like the belts but it looks good if you are ultra skinny or under 25.

I have the woven Garbo bag in black, and I LOVE IT. I have a lot of amazing bags, but this bag is one of my favorites. It is VERY well made; it’s held up great, even though I am really abusive to my bags! It still looks new!

    Hello-

I have the BE&D Garbo in the Quince color. The EXACT same version as the one above on the left. This newest Garbo style-(with the double row of pointy smaller studs on the straps) came out for sample sales only and never went into production. The Garbo’s with the large single row studs on the straps became the final design. This can be deceiving because some of the stock photos are of the sample sale model. It was deceiving to me- but happily I was able to track down the last sample sale model of the gorgeous Quince! I disagree with the ladies who wrote that the BE&D Garbo’s are rip offs of Sonia Rykiel and/or “there’s the girl with the stud bag” as if it’s tiresome. Sonia Rykiels handbags are DE-LISH and I adore them- but so are these! The BE&D bags are more “uniform” than the Rykiels. And these bags with their little “chocolate chip” bullets melted into all that buttery, creamy, intoxicating leather will make you want to take a spoon to it! The leather on my bag is unbelievable! The color is actually more milk chocolate hot cocoa powder brown than pictured above. You feel like foamy mousse is filling your hands when you run your fingers in between the studs. They do NOT look cheap nor does the hardware look cheap. These are RICH looking bags and they are constructed like a brick house. YES. “Mighty Mighty! ‘Lettin it all hang out!”
