Valentino Vertical Pleated Tote: Snob or Slob?

valentinopleatedtote.jpgThe uber popular Maison pleated tote has a new little sister; one that is more subtle and feminine in its approach to pleats. The biggest trend we saw on the runways, both Spring and Fall 2009 was the creative use of origami folds. Valentino's interpretation is softened and modernized-- with functional shoulder straps to boot. The color is a bit blah but it could be a neutral for all the neon brights of spring ready to wear.

I like this, it has a quiet luxury about it. Quiet bags are the latest buzz word, you don't want to flash any diamonds or embellishments right now as it feels inappropriate when 10% of the population may lose their jobs. But a demure yet luxurious bag is timeless and chic in any economic situation. At Bergdorf Goodman for $3,395 What do you think of quiet bags? Boring or appropriate?

  • I'm a diehard Valentina fan for years. Their quiet presence -- sublime and serene -- are the reasons to bu into their luxury. Everyone spots a Chanel or MJ bag everywhere (or insert your fave logo status symbol here).

Pleated tote is nothing short of spectacular craftsmanship under a legendary house of style.

  • I like it. It is different in a nice way. Even the color, if it is what I see on my screen, is ok.

  • Drop dead gorgeous.....

  • Yes; nothing quieter than a $3500 bag.

  • I know, right, Anonymous? Your solidarity with the working poor is touching.

I think it's a lovely bag. But since you just spent, what, around $40K on that birkin? Spare me your crocodile tears. The non-rich aren't dumb. We know that $3500 spent on a bag is still $3500 no matter how "toned down" the bag looks.

Heck, it's better for the economy that you're spending the money, and it's your right to spend it how you please. But the false modesty just feels insulting.

    • I don't understand why people care what others spend on their bags. This blog is their opinion, if you're insulted, go some where else to get your bag fix.

Oh, and if you knew anything about Croc birkins, they start at $25k.

Back to the bag- this is stunning! So subtle and so gorgeous, it is beautifully made and well worth the price. Love it!

      • I agree w Michelle that there is no need for snide remarks on what others spend on a bag. While it's bad out there, for those people who has the money or has saved for all the sales that is going on, I say enjoy your purchases in good health. Even when I didn't have money, i never envied others who had the money, At the end of the day, you must live for yourself, jealousy is such wasted emotion. So Anonymous enjoy your croc birkin, it must be gorgeous and L, take that chip off your shoulder!!!!
That said, i love the bag, but $3500 is too much. I still think that all designer name bags need to drop their arbitrary prices like everything else, or they will be out of the business before we recover from this recession.

  • I don't like the color...but I'm still on the Lindy kick, so if I had $3500.00, Hermes here I come...which would probably be just a downpayment on a Lindy, lol.

  • It may be quiet for a Maison-looking line but this bag is no plain jane at all. still stunning and architectural, which is the buzzword for spring 2009. still, the maison is amazing, quite incomparable.

  • I too think that saying you need a "quiet" $3500 bag to relieve guilt for your wealth is quite condescending.

  • Michelle, It's not about the price paid for a handbag. It's about the attitude that those less wealthy will be so disturbed by obvious displays of wealth that we need to tone it down and buy still expensive yet plainer looking handbags.

I did not take offense to the Croc Birkin post. On the contrary, I thought it was rude for posters to ask how much it cost.

    • This is a bag website..they name all the prices except Hermes bag prices. Personally I don't think it's such a big deal since you can call or go to a Hermes bag store and see the prices of the bags. How can one be rude when all the other bags have price tag on them? On the Hermes bag, the prices do vary on the type of leather, plus Hermes increases its prices every few months (although they finally stopped being greedy lately and stopped that nonsense).

  • I like quiet luxury, it's neither condescending nor rude to want to enjoy your luxury without an obvious display of wealth with logos
At the same time, I think if you do want to flaunt your wealth it's fine too. It's a free god damn world

  • So totally changing the subject...does anyone know what bag this is that rachel bilson is carrying?

  • So sorry B, the reply was from me,not from anonymous.

  • This bag seems suit for a lady, anyway, I still like it, and can you find a channel handbags supplier?

  • Hi everyone- I did not get online yesterday afternoon as I was spending time with my son. Sorry for the late response.

Okay, need a few minutes to digest the comments...

I am always surprised to see people react to my writing. I'm just making observations and the blog is my personal opinion. No offense was intended and I'm certainly not trying to be condescending.

    Thanks for reading! xo

  • i am all for quiet luxury, though not in this particular style.
as for condenscending comments: it is not tina, but all those who jump at the slightest critical note, defending their $$$ spent. please, spend your money any way you want, just dont for a moment think that your money or your expensive bags somehow make you better than most people.

    • If buying "expensive" bags make one think they are better than others, then one belongs in a therapist's office rather than this website. I buy the bags that I LOVE, not to keep up with Jones or show off to people..I would like to think most of us on this website genuinely appreciate bags...for me, its just wonderful to find people who love bags like I do. it definitely does not mean buying certain bags make me better than others.
I do think many bags today are overpriced, that said, I hardly can fault people for buying them since everyone has their own tastes and retail therapy seems to work for many.
I actually agree this bag, while beautiful should be $1500, rather than $3390 b/c for that price, I buy a chanel or save a little more for a Hermes.

      • Well said, Ping! I'll meet you at Hermes in about a year, when the bag budget has been revived!!

        • Dear Pursenickety, i will take you up on it:) For some reason lately, I just cannot get myself too excited over bags, even Hermes, but I hope I will be in a better shopping mood in a year's time (or maybe less:) I'm happy to meet you at any Hermes (even overseas:) Ping

  • If fashion is art then $3500 doesn't seem so extravagant to adorn yourself with a beautiful bag.

  • Its a beautiful bag ,I even love the color.

  • This is gorgeous!

  • OK...I read that whole debate twice. Those of you with TRUE disposable income PLEASES KEEP SPENDING!! Any real cash pumped into this economy can only be a good thing! If however, you are buying on credit, or borrowing against your house and are having trouble paying your bills PLEASE STOP! Some of us are growing tired of funding bailouts.

And..maybe I am confused, but in the above argument...How did crocodile tears turn into a croc Birkin???

  • OOPS!!

Forgot to mention, LOVE this bag!!

  • OOPS!!

Forgot to mention, LOVE this bag!!

  • I'm loving the 2009 Valentino bags. They are gorgeous. The Valentino shoes are lovely and very comfortable. However, the price of this bag is too steep. Perhaps it's because of all the origami-like folds. I can only justify paying this price for a python or other skin bag and only if I can't live without it.

This year, I am being very selective with my spending and this won't be on my list. I just bought a TDF croc and python bag by Nancy Gonzalez in the neutral skins for that price. It's a work of art.
