Gold Rush- Vintage Gold Bags

The Power of Gold-- A child finds a shiny rock in a creek, thousands of years ago, and the human race is introduced to gold for the first time. Gold's early uses were no doubt ornamental, and its brilliance and permanence (it neither corrodes nor tarnishes) linked it to deities and royalty in early civilizations. Gold has always been powerful stuff. The earliest history of human interaction with gold is long lost to us, but its association with the gods, with immortality, and with wealth itself are common to many cultures throughout the world.

I have often read about bags made of gold in magazines but have never seen any as extraordinary as the vintage gold bag above in white gold mesh. The intricate weaving is exquisite and obviously took a lot of labor and love to create.  It's so unusual to find a gold purse of this shape and design not to mention its large size--  7" long, 6" w at the bottom and 4" at the top, 2 1/4" deep.  The white gold minaudiere/purse is made of 18kt gold with a mirror on the interior; the chain is removable to use as clutch.  I envision Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet or one of the other Oscar nominees with it-- surely whoever carries this gold bag will win the ultimate Golden Statue-- the Oscar!   And if you're looking for that wildly lavish gift of luxury, this is it.  This is a bag worthy of a Queen.  Retail is $85,000 but for Bag Snob readers they will discount it to $35,000 (remember the price of gold only goes up so this is a wise investment)!  Call House of Kahn Estate Jewelers for more information312-943-9937, ask for Tobina Kahn or email her.

  • seriously, gorgeous! but who'd spend this kind of money right now?

  • Sarah- Think of it as an investment, remember that gold is about to go up over $1000 an ounce! these bags are much more gorgeous than a gold brick.

If I had $35000, I would buy these in a heartbeat.

  • I was just thinking these bags must weight a lot, so if the value of the gold is worth $85000 and you got for $35000 you are making money. Gold is the only thing to invest in these days, in my opinion!

  • I hestitate to mention this but many readers on this site still rave about lusciousness and beauty of bags like hermes birkins and crocodile or alligator skin bags that cost as much if not more. In reality, those croc products are based on 'perceived' value rather than real openly tradeable commodities like gold, copper, coffee beans etc.

So if there are people out there still buying those kinds of bags, why not invest in artistic beauty and real market commodities like a bag made of gold?

  • Go for the gold!

  • Wow...
I love them and can only dream of owning these beauties...

  • I just invested a lot of money in gold. If I would have known about this bag a few days back I would have invested in it instead. Love em.

  • Gold is going up as we speak! I would rather own it and wear it and use it and see it go up in value than watch my stock portfolio deteriorate.

  • Where and when would you actually use this bag? It's scary enough when our jewelry gets snatched off our ears, neck or finger. What more a bag this valuable? Imagine the heart attack when the 'snatcher/ thief' yanks this off your arms and speeds away on a motorcycle.

Gold bars belong in a vault. Carrying it around is asking for trouble. Stick to your YSL, Fendi, Chloe and Hermes.

  • Gold is over $1000 an ounce! Not only can I wear it, I can watch my investment grow.

  • Agh come on, with all the fakes these days, who would believe it to be real? On the other hand, with all the crooks out there who would be crazy enough to wear the real thing?? A complete stranger once asked if my engagement ring was real. Rather than make myself a target, I admired it on my hand and responded sheepishly "well, it looks real, doesn't it?"

  • It really can be an investment. But for outside it's not very good idea to wear it. Better to take something cheaper. IMO.
