The New Jackie from Gucci
newjackiegucci.jpgguccibrownjackie.jpg

All you Gucci fans can stop harassing me– I have plenty of nice (and just a few not so nice) to say about the New Jackie hobo. The original Jackie bag launched a thousand knockoffs which I’m sure pissed Gucci off to no end so why not join in right? I do like this bag (in both colors); the hand stitched detail gives the traditional bag a boho chic twist that Jackie herself would have approved of. Actually, it’s more Ali McGraw circa Love Story. Anyway, even the tassle is appropriate for the bag but lose the shoulder strap, use it on your dog or whatever, just don’t use it with the bag. Now the not so nice; the bag is huge– it’s 19 inches! Sounds like I’m describing a newborn and it probably weighs as much as a one. Oh, don’t look at the price, you’ll be so pissed. Serious, don’t do it. Okay fine I’ll just tell you, it’s $3,195 for. a. leather. tote. Your turn– want me to say it for you? WTF!?!? Gucci At Saks.com

  1. OMG!! Tina~~when I saw the price I said WTF? then saw that you said it for me!! lol-I like the bags-WOW-on the price, and NOT even exotic skin!! C’mon Gucci, what are you guys smokin???

  2. Cherie L. on said:

like the redesign. it’s way too big for my frame. the extra strap is useless, thank god it can be detached. love the red colour one. the price is right only if the bag is python or something exotic. gucci pricing = excuse me.

LOL. You bag snobs never cease to make me laugh.

  4. lauren on said:

maybe the extra strap is for messenger/cross body capabilities? did you hear that extra straps cost 1,500 nowadays…lots of inflation lol…

maybe they think they are pulling an hermes with “handstitched” leather…wth?

  5. jackie on said:

    LMAO!!!!!!

    It def looks heavy

  6. ha ha! That kind of price? During credit crunch? Someone got hit in the head!

  7. Tina, you’re the best!!! WTF indeed.

  8. Tee hee hee!! I thought the SAME thing when I saw the price on the Gucci site. Someone over at Gucci is CRAZY!

  9. Bag Snob Tina on said:

Thought you guys would like that :)

  10. not feeling this at alllll. i agree with the “wtf” on the price, I could get 4 Botkier hobos and still have a huge girls night out for that kind of cash lol

  11. Liandra on said:

Oh Tina!!! you are at your best with this one. I concur completely. I cannot believe that they have the audacity to charge $3200? I would opt to purchase a Bottega Veneta instead. Tchau: that is “ciao” in portuguese for those who dont know :)

  12. The price is sky high! I agree with Inga – someone at Gucci is really crazy!

  13. Christie on said:

    RIDICULOUS!!!

maybe Gucci was tipped off about some super secret hyperflation of like 300%!

do these people ever look at whats going on in the world and say yea.. maybe we shouldnt charge 3k?

    *shrugs*

  14. Dear Tina

It seems like I cannot go without your opinion for even one day!

I recently saw the Ostrich Calle by Loewe – Victoria Beckham’s got one:

    http://www.celebrity-gossip.net/images/thumbnails/victoria-beckham-fur-1229-8.jpg

Do you think it’s $10K price tag can be justified in any way? It looks heavy(that padlock!) And can Ostrich be really ever worth that much?

What do you think? Snob or Slob? Merci!!

    xoxo

  15. Bag Snob Tina on said:

HI Lina– I adore Loewe bags but feel they are a bit overpriced.

    http://www.bagsnob.com/2008/09/loewe_pre-spring_2009_preview.html

The one Victoria is carrying is outrageously overpriced! They are charging Hermes prices but the skin is not as nice. Hermes hand hammers each quill on the ostrich skin so it’s flat and beautiful… Hope this helps!

    xoxo

  16. Thank you for answering my question Tina:)

Your advice always helps! I just cannot understand how all those designers can get away with those prices..Or maybe they can’t…after all Cavalli is selling 20% of it’s shares…

  17. lauren on said:

maybe cavalli needs some extra pennies to afford that over-excessive yacht that was in some magazine recently. I wanted to throw up with how gaudy it was! furs and gold all over the place and the thing is huuuuge! They like living at the top a little too much they forget that there are prices that are too outrageous even for bag lovers..

  18. Love the bag! Don’t love the price, ridiculous!

  19. Sherry on said:

I love the look of the brown leather, but too expensive.

  20. I actually like the size of the bag – i’m looking for a large tote that I can put everything in it….but the price turns me waaaaaaaaaaay off. 3200 – that’s like aonth of mortgage for a nice home. 3 months of rent for a bedroom apt in silicon valley

but I’m sure there are still some rich folks who can afford one…..:T

You made my day dear tina! I love you!

This post made me laugh so hard!!

  22. tina, you are on target on every point! I bought a Hermes trim a year ago for about the same price! I have the original Gucci “Jackie” bag in black leather and suede from years ago which I LOVE. This is sloppy and OVERPRICED! I have not bought a gucci bag in years and this is another reason to stay on that path!

  23. I’m not sure, but I’ve read somewhere that Gucci copied Hermes’ Trim bag. The bag that Jackie O. actually carried was an Hermes Trim not a Gucci Jackie Hobo bag.

  24. Tina, you are too cute! An informative and funny read, as always. And I totally agree – WTF?!?!

  25. shanghai_dude on said:

Wasnt the original Jackie a delicate gandbag slung over the shoulder? and maybe its enlarged out of proportion becoz Gucci needs to get rid of those stacked-up animal skin they purchased when the eco was good? just a thought. Anyway the red one kinda reminds me of Lancel…

  26. shanghai_dude on said:

Oh, and wishing Tina and Kelly and all fellow snobs a happy ‘niu’ year. Maybe its the perfect timing for disecting a ShanghaiTang bag? teehee..

  27. Anonymous on said:

I have read the same. In photographs with Jackie O, she is carrying the Hermes’ trim, not Gucci. The trim has a very unique closure.

  28. The red one looks nice, especially when dangling from a model’s arm in their ad, but most definitely not worth the price tag. It is obnoxious to charge that much considering in today’s economy you get buy a quality designer handbag for less.

    http://www.lelamoda.com

  29. The bags look nice, but yeah, 19 inches?

Don’t get me wrong, I like many bags that I see online but when I get up close, in the boutique or department store, I think WTF? and most times it’s not about the price but the size.

After using a large tote (that can be carried on the shoulder) for weeks, I went to the gym, and went to place my hands behind my head for a few crunches, and my right shoulder hurt. I was surprised. I couldn’t recall injuring myself recently, let alone bump into anything but as I tried to bring my right hand under my arm (my left arm was fine), I felt like I was going to rip out my rotator cuff muscles. I had a eureka moment though:

Big bags (shoulder, tote, etc) aren’t good. I’m surprised that this issue hasn’t been raised by health professionals.

Recently, when I went to buy a Neverfull, I looked at some of the newer arrivals in the Sydney store, and they were bloody huge! What’s more, they call the bag a ‘shopper’. LOL. You shop and after a few weeks, your rotator cuff hurts like hell and you need a physiotherapist.

    @ Anastacia

Hitching some large bags up on your shoulder is def bad! been tehre done that. now i just jam it up at my elbow ala Victoria Beckham if I have to carry sth heavy. chic n less fuss this way;)

I saw this on the Gucci website and totally passed right over. My initial thoughts? Not into the dog strap either, way too big (I don’t really do big). Abhorrent price tag. BUT, I JUST tried this on, and I LOVE it, dog strap and all. It sits nicely next to the body, and the red is amazing (although I had to order, none on hand in the store). $3k is a lot to see on your computer screen with nothing to touch and pine for. Definitely more palatable when you are surrounded by Gucci-ness and totally in the moment.

  32. The large jackie is too large and the small is too small, I wished there was a size just in the middle.

  33. Baggirl007 on said:

Have any of you seen the medium size Jackie in the beige (they call it gold)leather logo. I saw it at the Gucci store and thought it looked gorgeous. Price $2400. Any thoughts?

  34. terra on said:

Yes Baggirl007 I saw the same bag in the gucci store when i went to las vegas in april. the medium sized bag is a great look but the price tag wasn’t. i took a picture of the bag in hopes of finding a replica bag on line. gucci is nice but not $2400′s worth.

  35. MrsMac on said:

I have the new Jackie and I LOVE it! It might be big (and it really does hold everything) but the strap is wide and comfortable and it doesnt cut into your shoulder at all. The leather is sensational and soft. Its totally fabulous like the woman it was named after and I think whilst the price is hefty, its going to be hot for a long time.

I bought the Large “New Jackie” Beige GG Canvas with brown leather…it’s beautiful but i didn’t know it was too large for me..considering that am petite. Thinking of selling it to someone who doesn’t want to spend $2995.00 at Neiman Marcus or Saks….

But it is very beautiful & great for travelling…as it holds alot of stuff!!!

  37. My wife is threatens me that that only way I can make her happy is to buy her this bag, apparently the house, car, holidays, private school, daily gym visits, diamonds etc just don’t do the trick. HOW DO I GET HER TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE IMPORTANT THINGS IN LIFE AND QUIT ALL THE COMMERICAL GARBABE YOU POOR WOMEN HAVE TO BASE YOUR EXISTENCE ON….

  38. that is so great purse,

i like it, but is much expensive ,

i really want to own one

  39. Fashionable 60s on said:

I own it in the brown. Love this bag in this color, in this size even if I am only 5’3″. Everything about this hand crafted bag is pure perfection. It is a bit bohemian with other je ne sais quoi qualities that individualist baby boomers like me love. Big is beautiful here. I use the strap in case I got tired of carying it on one shoulder. The very useful strap allows me to shift this big bag across my body when both hands are too busy to keep the bag from falling off my shooulder. There’s nothing to dislike about this serious bag. There is no LMAO to share with you for me, sorry. I love it almost as I love my original lamb skin Indy bag. So there!

My hubby purchased the new JAckie for me in coral when we were in Paris in June. It is a very LIGHT bag as far as weight is concerned. The leather is buttery soft and it makes me nervous to use it. Scratches so easily. I have already taken it to Gucci twice to fix scratches and bleeding from rubbing on my jeans (never in my life have I had this issue with any of my bags) I do receive oodles of comments any time I use it though. I feel all in all nice addition to my collection price was a little high…

I just bought this bag. It is large, but this dark beige leather is SO beautiful.I am debating about keeping it, but it is very slouchy, which makes the size less of an issue. THE LEATHER IS SO GORGEOUS.

  43. hello, new to this sight, but I see you are a pocket book lover. By chance have you seen the bag Jill Marie Jones paraded at P Diddy’s All White Affair? I believe it’s by gGcci, not 100% sure. If you know what I’m talking about and can find that bag would you kindly repsond, thank you.
