New reality tv obsession-- "The City"

thecity.jpgI was told about "The City" last September in NYC by Emese S. (Global Communications Director of DVF in opening scene when Whitney goes to work) who is actually in it so imagine how excited I've been for its premiere-- my friend is on a reality tv show! Woohooo!!! I guess this is a good time to confess I have never watched an entire episode of "The Hills" so I had no idea what to expect (btw-- is it me or is Whitney really stiff when she delivers her lines? And why does she look bored in every scene? I guess I have to remember these girls are not actresses-- or are they? Am confused about this reality tv stuff). Anywhoo, NY social girl Olivia Palermo is also in it-- I guess they're trying to make her the bitch on the show; I've met her at parties and she's pretty cool (I actually heard Whitney's the bitch in real life but that rumor could have been started by Olivia's camp and hey, who says reality is real!?!?). More exciting, however, is that I discovered Kelly and I are also in it when I watched the first episode (well, kind of)-- we were sitting 2nd row across from Rosario Dawson at the DVF runway show when the camera panned across the audience so you can kind of see our heads! Lastly, our fave publicist Kelly Cutrone of People's Revolution, makes a cameo-- we love you Kelly-- would love to lunch again and this time hopefully there won't be an earthquake LOL (yup, a bit off ass kissing never hurts before fashion week)!!! Tune in to MTV on Monday nights to watch "The City"-- even if you turn the sound off, it's good for the visuals of bags and fashion. Or watch full episodes here.

This is a screen shot from the first episode. The guy I circled in pink is my stepson, Dennis who is in college in Philly so I brought him to the shows with me-- I'm sitting next to him but you can only see the back of my head because I'm talking to someone behind me-- funny, right!?!?!

  • I have the 2 episodes of City TiVo'd, excited to watch them. I have never seen Laguna beach or The Hills, but curious to watch this one. I am in it for the fashion:) Oh, I hope Rachel Zoe show comes back for the 2nd season.

    xoxo

  • I too have never watched an episode of The hills or Laguna Beach. Will watch this, def in it for the fashion as well!!! xo =)

  • Ooo I didn't realize I could watch The City online, thanks so much for the link! And you're a TV star now - I can sort of, kind of see your head in that pic! Congrats :) You should definitely be featured more prominently in future episodes! Or maybe get your own reality TV show...? I'd watch it!

    • Ashley, You are too kind!!!

      xoxo

    • Just for fun, what kind of show would you be interested in watching?

      • Ok, I feel kind of awkward posting after that post by Anja above me... I never thought any of those things about you Tina! Well, anyways, I would love a reality show just about what it takes to run this blog, the different designers you get to meet, parties you go to, and how you go about decided which bags to feature on the blog and which you don't. It would be fun to see some of the trashy bags and whatnot you get sent to advertise on your blog - I bet a lot of people send you things that aren't "Bag Snob" quality! So yea, it would be fun to see what goes on behind the scenes of such a popular blogging enterprise!

        • Ashley,
This is extremely helpful. Thanks for your response!

          • Hi Tina,

Just want to say i've been reading your blog for about a year or so and i find it very informative and interesting. Especially when you talk about different constructions and "behind the scenes" stuff. I am a guy as you can tell and an Asian, i read your blog because it is very interesting and funny, and i love to support my fellow asian in anyway i can. I am in Interior Design school and use your blog as inspiration for my designs since i tend to draw inspiration from strange places. Not to take a whole page but if you had a reality show i would watch, it would be very interesting to see how a business is ran and your editing of your bags.

I told myself i wouldnt comment about Anja but keep your head high and i wish you the best.

            Jason

ps: it would be cool if you guys did a "design snob" website.. just a thought .

            • Hi Jason,
thanks for your encouragement and suggestion but we really can't take on another website! As it is we are a bit overwhelmed.... but such a great idea...

Thanks for supporting us Jason! Will keep your suggestions in mind :)
              xoxo

            • ooh! ooh! i second this! can i be a design snob guest-blogger? (fellow design snob here, though i more often use the term "design nerd," lol) i'll weld you pretty furniture :)

i'm mostly being silly, although if you have any interest in decor/architecture/furniture/etc. that would be really cool.

          • No problem! I'm sorry that my comment had to start a little drama though. Just keep on doing what you're doing, you rock and I love this blog! Thanks for all your hard work!

  • anja, jealousy is not attractive. your nasty comments are unnecessary and im surprised the snobs haven't removed you.

what other people choose to buy or how they choose to live their lives is really no one's business but their own.

like ashley and jason, i would love to watch a show about how bag snob was created and maintained from a female entrepreneur's viewpoint. i think it's great that you guys started this network of fashion blogs when your babies were so little. enough of vapid housewives of where ever!

i am also waiting the next installment of snob tv girls! happy new year and don't let the jackasses get you down.

  • As an avid Bag Snob reader, I would find a show about the ins and outs of running the blogs fun to watch. Like when you and Kelly get a bag to review and you hate it but the designer is say, Michael Kors, would love to see your faces when you open the box!

  • haha, when I first read Ashley's comment, I thought about how I'd like to see a reality show about Tina, Kelly and the snob network! It'd be nice to see a fashion based reality show about people who are actually intelligent and funny as opposed to ridiculous and annoying (like, ahem, heidi from the hills).

  • My goodness, I was expecting to read some juicy gossip about the city girls Whitney and Olivia when I saw all the comments. Did not expect the drama. Tina, there is no need to explain yourself to the girl who left the comment. I've been following your blogs for almost 2 years and I admire what you and Kelly have accomplished in such a short time! Keep up the wonderful work ladies and a show would be really exciting. Would love to watch you and Kelly shopping at Neiman Marcus and tearing up the bags you deem unworthy. Just my two cents.

  • It made me laugh when you asked why Whitney looks bored in every scene. So true -- and if you ever watch The Hills, you'll notice it's the same way -- it's like the producers actually try to piece together the most unflattering facial expressions possible. On a different note, I would love to watch a show about the Snob blogs!

  • i love whitney i dont think she is a B*tch at all its probably just a big fat rumor ...i think the show is cute and she probably is stiff with her lines because she isnt an actress so far the show is good and enjoyable plus i like to see the handbags they are wearing on the show

  • I would LOVE to watch a show on the Snobs. I loved your designer interviews/webcasts, and would be tickled to see you guys on The Style Network dishing honest advice/recommendations on clothing, shoes, bags, etc. All the style shows seem incredibly tame, and a little bite, especially from the Snobs, would be refreshing.

On a related note, I have to say that as a life-long New Yorker, The City makes my blood boil in a way that SATC (in its nascent stages) didn't. The City is such a laughable representation of New York City with women who actually don't work (they may pin a hem here or there but mostly they're shopping and gossiping) for a living, and their lifestyles and lack of education/class are far from aspirational. Although we all knew SATC was a unrealistic portrait of how most of us in NYC live, at least they were smart, hard-working, cultured, educated women of a certain age.

Perhaps I'm not as articulate as I'd like to be, but as a woman of 33 the last thing I want to see is dim light bulbs gushing about their wares. Going to the staid or hip hotspots. Guess what? Fashionable people actually do ride the subway - I've seen Maggie Gyllenhal and Jennifer Connelly on the Q train. And not everyone stomps around in stilettos feigning interest.

More like I want to see women like the Snobs - women who work hard for what they have. Women I can actually relate to.

    xo

    • agreed! i've never lived in new york, but I'm their age and have done the whole "move to a city by yourself for an internship" thing. except I actually work ridiculously hard and (like to think i have) more than one facial expression. as one of my friend's said, "you can't have a show about 20-somethings at their first job in the city without including sketchy sublets, homeless people and public transportation."

on a side note, my 18 year old sister's friends tell her they look like whitney, which makes me die a little inside because she got the 5'10 and model-thin genes. on a secondary side note, i heard that olivia palermo has tried to get included in other "young rich person" reality shows but they didn't work out, and is basically just using the show because she wants to be a household name and "brand." which is kind of scary but maybe interesting if you watch the show (i don't).

  • I love reality TV, but I can't stand shows like this because they don't feel like "reality." It's just too snobby for me.
