Louis Vuitton Stephen Sprouse hits stores on January 9th!
By Bag Snob Tina

Left: Speedy with Rose ($1,310) in stores on January 9th Right: Neverfull graffiti in stores Feb. 2nd

I am very interested in seeing Louis Vuitton‘s tribute to Stephen Sprouse bags from a collector’s standpoint. Marc Jacobs continues Sprouse’s vision to “deface” the iconic monogram with his two signature concepts, dayglo bright graffiti and the rose. I have to admit I prefer this “Tribute to Sprouse” collection over the CDC limited editions last year– mostly because I wore a ton of Sprouse inspired dayglo graffiti stuff when I was in junior high school and even copied his art work in my art class. I won’t be walking around with a hot pink graffiti bag now but I do love the roses. If you are a bag as art aficionado, the rose speedy would be perfect to display in your home or use daily. Though you should be weary of the knock offs that will most certainly ensue and purchase it from an authorized LV retailer. I was invited to a tribute exhibit for the Sprouse collection and after party tomorrow night in NYC (with MJ himself, no less! Oh so sad I can’t be there as I am sure MJ is dying to meet me but will send our staff writer, Sharon, who will hopefully get close enough to him to give him a kiss for me).

As part of Louis Vuitton’s commitment to Sprouse’s work, the house will also make a donation to the National Academy of Design – Stephen Sprouse Scholarship Fund to mark the launch of the collection. This will make up for the fact that the bags will go for a very pretty penny. Check out Louis Vuitton here or call your local SA to get on the wait list.

So tell me, will you be getting your hands on one of these? (Jump for pricing!)

Wow, look how young MJ looks here. I am kind of obsessed with him right now.

Again, so sad I can’t make this event. It could have been a great opportunity to pick MJ’s brain!

Prices for Rose Bags:

Speedy 30 Roses – $1,310

Neverfull MM Roses – $1,360

Keepall 50 Roses – $1,780

Pochette Accessoires Roses -$500

Tina you’re so sweet! I’m so excited to go and to see them as well. Is it just me though or does it not seem to be enough time since the last Stephen Sprouse-inspired collection? I still remember when the LV graffiti bag first came out and it was everywheeeree..and now they’re back again! I do see the collector’s value in these bags, but other than that don’t find them particularly attractive..though I have to say I’ve always been partial to 80s neon:)

You gotta be kidding-what exactly is so special about those bags-the fact that MJ sprayed pink graffiti all over classic LV logo? This logo really does not look good when mixed with a modern design, imagine if Hermes suddenly sprayed their Birkins!

Something about this collection is kitschy and fun to me, I don’t know why. I think I may purchase a speedy.

I did happen to ask my SA about a wait list and there isn’t one — just a little fyi for anyone else interested, nor can you order over the phone (which is a bummer for me since I won’t be in town and I like to shop my local boutique).

I actually wouldn’t mind seeing some crazy mod-looking birkins done up in tie-dye-throw-back-to-the-80s. all they need to do is hire MJ for their creative director lol

So sorry to have kept my comments low. The sorry part of this is that my mother died just a few days ago. We actually didn´t have a warm relationship, and maybe just thing makes everything so difficult. I´m her only child and there are lots of things to arrange. The only good part is that I know that she passed away without pain and in her sleep. Wishing all bloggers a better new year!

And the difference is that the graffiti is covering a Vuitton LOGO, meant to convey a message immediately. Hermes bags are simply leather, or a skin, and covering that wouldn’t make a point.

Definitely not the graffiti. The colours are too Eighties for me…too Wham! Maybe Wham! used these colours before any other fashion designer, but…as far as I’m concerned, there is no real excuse for lime green but I love the roses and even so, it would be difficult to justify spending a heap more for a Neverfull, just for the name/deceased artist/roses. I already have a Neverfull, and while it’s useful as a bag (I use it at the supermarket, library..etc), it doesn’t merit an extra thousand dollars on the retail price just because Marc Jacobs decides to resurrect Sprouse a second time. I’ll have to see what it looks like in front of me, but if I had to really spend (to collect one item), it would be the pochette. I wouldn’t spend more than a thousand for a bag, not in this range.

There are some things that shouldn’t be defaced.

I have to say that I hate the roses, but I LOVE the graffiti… which is really weird, because I really hated the old graffiti bags. I guess that these just have a nice sense of fun and frivolity about them… They seem…light… for want of a better word. The roses, on the other hand, just look cheap and nasty to me.

I plan to get a graffiti Speedy… which is also weird, because I normally hate Speedies (I hate the way they sag, distort and pull. I’m a normally a lover of structure and shoulder straps in bags). In fact, I think it’s fair to say that I’m lusting after one. lol.

    Dear Bag Snob,

Loving the blog of course but I have to ask. Why do you despise Gucci so much and then openly admit to adore this LV Rose bag?? Sure everyone can agree Gucci has not been what it used to but it most definitely is on the same level as LV. Everyone has a different taste and yes some have better taste than others but I just adore Gucci handbags, they are very classy, and would not be caught dead with this LV because it looks like something a tacky girl coming out of the projects would carry.

Handbags are about the quality, functionality and personal taste. If you or a loved one will spend their hard earned money, especially in today’s economy, on a well crafted piece it should be personal not because you or anyone else said it is gorgeous or ville. When selected well in the right color the Gucci canvas is way more suitable to the eye that any of the other monogram handbags out there. This is just an opinion from someone in the industry who works with models and photographers very frequently as a stylist. I believe in personal style and classic looks. I don’t believe Jackie O would be opposed to a Gucci handbag, I can see her frowning at this LV though.

    with love,

Good question, I must say I like the rose because I am a fan of Sprouse, I’ve done a lot of pastel paintings with the same roses. It’s the same reason I loved the Prada fairy bags, http://www.bagsnob.com/2008/01/prada_fairy_bag_the_art_of_fas.html

when an artist brings their vision to a bag it brings a different aesthetic value to it for me.

I am not sure what Gucci bag you are speaking of but I have more than a few Gucci bags from the Tom Ford era, still love them.

Now the fairy bag from Prada I love. This is something so romantic and fairy tale about it.

I was not speaking about any Gucci handbag in particular, I have never commented on your entries but I have read quite a few and I noticed Gucci and their current customers seems to be a target for you, especially their GG canvas. I absolutely love some of the Fall/Winter Gucci handbags because it reminds me of my culture. Well I could do without all the fringe but hey are very well made and classy in my opinion. The leather is very luscious and unique

It is very sad that there are so many fakes out there it will not stop me from using mine with pride, even after the Tom Ford era. With so many truly ugly handbags and tacky brands out there Frida Giannini is doing just wonderful, give the girl a break.

    Faithful reader,

I do not like the Speedy 30 in any form, the original nor the new ones. While I do like some Louis Vuitton handbags, I have noticed that most have very few conveinences in them, if there is a cell phone pocket, either it is small, or it flops out and gets in the way. As for the Speedy itself, to me personally, it looks sloppy on my arm, the bag doesn’t hold it’s shape at all, and let’s face it, you like the bag for it’s shape…don’t you?
