Ferragamo 'Sofia': Snob or Slob?

Ferragamo bags are finally commanding the attention it craves in magazine editorials but I'm still not 100% sold.  Most of the bag designs lack creativity (but the shoes are hot!) and are costly.  The Sofia tote is okay, with the signature hardware but lacks that oomph I'm looking for.  I do like the zippered back compartment, can not say enough about that-- especially with its inconvenient "Kelly bag" style flap you'll need it.  I never use my Kelly bags unless I am going to a lunch where I am not required to open my bag often.  Have you ever carried a single top handle flap bag and tried to open it while standing?  The contents sometimes spill out-- annoying!  But I do like the brand's efforts and will continue to keep my eyes on the collection.  What do you guys think of the Sofia bag?  Worthy enough to shell out this kind of dough?    (Jump to see the bag carried by Claudia Schiffer)

  • The left one is ok for me,seen only from the front.

  • You read my mind -- your comments are so on point. The moment I saw this bag I thought it looked very Hermes and that it lacked originality. It's not terrible, but not very creative either.

  • SNOB! i like the white one. i think it's a fresh birkin alternative for the younger girls. but the shoulder strap has got to go!

  • Doesn't this remind you of the muse II from YSL just a little bit?

  • i like them. they look like slouchy kelly bags, which is unusual because a kelly, like a birkin, is very structured and almost stiff to look at. i'm totally digging the sea snake skin version on the left. i don't like the extra strap but it definitely needs to be there. how do you open a kelly with one hand while standing up, if you don't have the extra strap?

  • I don't know. With these bags, it's probably better to see them in a store than on a web page. Perhaps they look better when they contain items? But the function is more important. For me, it would be a damn pain to experience difficulties opening the bag at that price.

  • Personally, I think this bag is effortless - I love it.
It's simplistic and chic and carries itself well.
Personally, a top-handle bag does not an Hermès Kelly make. Sure, they are similar in the sense that there's a top-handle and a flap, but that's as far as similarities go. There really are so many classically styled closures out there that, if you attempt to break the mould, you're either crowned as looking "forward" or being a complete lunatic. I like my bags to always have a classical look, instead of taking risk with some sort of goulish thing which may end up being "last season" within the net four months.
The strap is a wonderful touch - even better that it's detachable.

  • Love the snakeskin one on the right but not enough to go buy it. Still guilty about economy to buy two bags. Aiming for the pink chanel 2.55 you showed last time instead

  • snob..i like the bags, very classic and the strap is a plus on those days when i need my hands to hold my youngest son's hands. I have not bought a Ferragamo in years, but I'm starting to like their bags recently, including this one.

  • you know what i just bought a new escada bag that is a single flap and had just discovered the problem of opening and closing it. luckily i got it at a steal for 75% so i'm not too disappointed.

  • And glad to see my request answered so quickly thx T.

2K is a lot to give out for a bag in this eco climate. But compare to some bags pumped out by other labels with an unjustifiable price tag, Ferragamo does have a good price value. After all its a big chunk of calf skin!

Style wise, I think with James the grandson being given more responsibility in the recent 2 years, the house has defnitely upped itself a notch.I personally met him and the house's new woman's line designer at Ferro's 80 anniversary ceremony last year in Shanghai and I was hooked... on both the heir and his blueprint for reboosting the brand's energy. a few months later I made my first Ferragamo purchase in my life:)

  • To be totally honest, I'm not feeling these bags to much.

  • These are run-of -the -mill bags. Nothing special.

  • I am not to keen on The Sophia, but I do love the white bag Claudia is gracing. The price is outrageous, but it is an investment that if need be you can always sell on Craigs list.

  • I just received the Fall 09 tulipan python version of the large Sophia. It is fabulous, simply fabulous!
