Stella McCartney Geometric Shoulder Bag
By Bag Snob Tina on December 16, 2008 1:00 pm Tina Craig

stellageometric.jpgStella McCartney is amazing, imagine how much creativity it took to make burlap look stylish and PVC scraps look like punk rock studs! I’ve been staring at this geometric bag and can’t believe the studs are not metal and that the skin is man made material– boy they are getting really good at this. Or maybe I just need to see this in person. Yes, $865 is a lot of money for a non leather bag but think about all the animals you saved. Not that I’m one to talk; 99.99% of my bags are leather or exotic, but I’m just saying– if you are into animal rights and such, this is the bag for you. Or if you’re just looking for a chic bad weather bag to tote around; this will work, too. But as much as I like this, it’s not something I’d buy. PVC may be animal friendly but it’s not very human friendly. But that’s just me. What about you– what do you think of man made materials? At Stella McCartney Bags at Net-a-porter.com

The State of California is currently considering a bill that would ban the use of PVC in consumer packaging due to the threats it poses to human and environmental health and its effect on the recycling stream-now,what would Stella say to that? I hate PVC and would never buy a bag made from it!

I’ve been recently introduced to a website that sells one of a kind handbags made by artists who use silk, cotton and vintage leather-if you’re a member of Peta that’s what you should be buying.

I´m not a SMc fan. Now who wants to wear plastic or whatevertheyare shoes other than rubber boots ? Yes, it does need creativity to come up with new ideas, when leather is banned.

Stella McCartney makes really nice bags, but I couldn’t bring myself to pay that much for man made materials, no matter how good the bag looks.

I recently made the switch to vegan after 15 years of just being a vegetarian and its taken a toll on my bag and shoe buying habits. I honestly have not been too crazy about most of Stella McCartney’s designs in the past, but recent ones have been much better and this bag here is about to become my birthday present to myself!

BTW, silk and vintage leather aren’t vegan and definitely a no-no for the PETA set. Though I should probably add that PETA’s not really my crowd … in fact the attitude of their street crew kept me from becoming a vegan for a really long time. They had me convinced that something in cheese was keeping me from being completely intolerable.

gosh,I did not realize they were against silk as well-I’ve just checked on their website:b Humane alternatives to silk include nylon, polyester(…)-yeah, I think I will give those a miss!

I’ve have been seduced countless times by Stella’s bags. Many many bags. I just grow more and more disappointed that she will charge luxury prices for a PVC bag. I’m no PETA-hater but when I pay hundredsssss and thousands for a bag, it better look as good like the first day I bought it, 10 years later. And we all know there is no such thing as longevity with PVC.

Pay Stella prices for PVC — this is daylight robbery.

the human cost from tanneries is just as bad, if not worse, in addition to the harm to animals. additionally, how could pvc possibly be worse for the environment when using skins kills off the animals living on the planet in addition to plant life that needs to support the feeding habits? acres of rainforest are cut down just to make room for grazing cows for leather. do your research before opening your mouth.

    Uh, we eat the animals…

And I know what I speak of when it comes to PVC. My uncle owned a PVC manufacturing plant and he told me how harmful it was to humans and to the environment. He shut it down back in the ’70s.

Animal friendly- people un-friendly- pvc is pure poison. Regardless as to the name (or price) attached. If you must, buy a cotton bag, or look for chrome-free leather. Leather is a by-product. Cows and sheep (very polluting on the hoof as well – all that methane!) are not raised and killed for their skins.

865.00 for that bag is not worth it and people are not spending that kind of money anymore on bags if they can get suitable nice style bags for less the days of thousand dollar bags are over

Wake up people. There are luxury bags for vegans too—some even made in Italy—-NOT made from pvc. I own several. Also many luxury leathers use pvc to coat it, and is used for hardware and design. Do research, then comment.
