Bag Trend Alert: More Exotics for Spring 2009!

Guest blog by Julia Dinardo of Fashion Pulse. Julia will be offering us Cheap and Chic options of current bag trends each week!

Left and center: Bottega Spring 09.  Right: Foley Corinna- cheap and chic option

It was hard not to notice the array of luxe, exotic skin bags that firmly rested on the arms of the models for the Spring 09 season. From tiny clutch proportions to doctor's bags, expensive skin is definitely in. We were happy to see that most designers didn't go overboard with the look by incorporating crazy patchwork and bright colors, that can cheapen the aesthetic. We found snakeskin to be quite prominent, along with croc and gator being close runners-up.

Friday Diversion - Bag Snob Rank Game

I have the best job in the world and even I like to skip out on Fridays! Well, if you are stuck at work and want to do something fun yet look busy at the same time, here is a quick 5 minute diversion. This game is different than the others, you rank the bags from 1 to 10. Trying to rank 7-10 turned out to be more fun than picking #1, which is easy. Go play at the Vox Pop site.

Tod's Helmut Bag

Tod's Helmet Piccola Bag.jpg Tod's Helmut Bag reminds me of someone. Someone who is youthful, exuberant and still views life with excitement and wonder.  Even the most mundane of events can be an adventure for this someone.  Because life, after all, is about one's attitude.  I was that someone in my 20's; when a trip down the street to the local street food vendor in Taiwan was an event that I planned for and anticipated.  0434805960861_275x275.jpgI was a bubbly, confident and energetic little thing that rarely allowed black clouds in my world.  My friends often said my energy was infectious and would always call upon me if they were depressed, knowing I'd lift them from their dark moods.  This bag would have been perfect for me back then as I swung through the jungle of life in my stilettos without a care in the world.  The soft little pleating detail with stitch fold over top reminds me of the many mini skirts that dominated my wardrobe back then.  The easy to open zipper top would be left open, so that I could access my cell and text (yes we had text messaging back in 1997 in Asia!) my friends easily.  I would have gotten this bag in multiple colors, as I did not understand back then that next season, there will be more bags to covet and to be had.   Tod's Helmut bag at eLuxury.com

The Bag Parade: Life on the sidelines of fashion

Every year the start of school marks an exciting time for me: For three hours each day, five days a week, my children will be Somewhere Else. Even more exciting however is the prospect of viewing the live- action, multi-label runway that takes place during drop-off and pick- up at our school. I suppose it's natural that when a bunch of women are in the same place at the same time, fashion  happens. And these women are formidable--endowed with deep pockets and an even deeper need to announce whatever position it is they feel they occupy in the world (Wealthy? Powerful? New Yorker? Sexually viable?). Their clothing and, even more so, their bags are worn as if to say, "Yes, I may have birthed three babies but my abs are still hard, my butt is still high, my hair is still long and if I walloped you with my pocketbook you'd wake up in Brooklyn."

I was going to do a story on bags worn at the Emmy's but due to one avoidable event coinciding with another unavoidable catastrophe, it will have to wait. The avoidable event was the eating of too much crab which lead to stomachache and dizziness Monday night. When I got up yesterday morning to finish the story, I found the catastrophe that was my computer - totally crashed. Not even a blink or sound. Yes, I am fishing for sympathy so please give some up. I do have this bag for you, although not as exciting, it certainly is more useful than red carpet clutches. Not the most original of designs but what I do like is that they understand the mantra "if you can't invent, improve". This yet-another-woven-bag with the plain leather accentuates the details of the contrasting woven design, which is not actually woven but a series of knots and loops. If this design was all over it would be too much and distracting. The thick banded shoulder strap though is something to ooh and ahhh over. A boring detail, yes, but how many bags do you have permanently stored in your closet due to uncomfortable straps? Exactly. After experiecing the joy of comfort my Tod's softy has afforded me, this minor detail has become major when buying bags. Another huge huge plus is the weight, like feather! This bigger than average bag is 20" by 15" with a forgiving 9" drop on the straps. For all this function, comfort and style, you are paying for - at $2500 I find it a bit hard to swallow (unlike the crab I ate). It is a worthy investment if this is a one off for the season (but for real, not as a rationalization). At Net-a-Porter. Check back tomorrow for Emmy Bags. You have to because I've worked so hard and have gone through so much for it!!!

Mulberry Snakeskin "Maggie" Clutch

Mulberry Maggie Clutch in Polished Goatskin
Loved this Mulberry clutch on sight but then took a closer look at hardware and realized it is a cheap knock off of my Hermes Medor clutch! Sigh... throw me a bone people! Why not just put a simple piece of metal here? At $595 the price is right but what's the point of carrying around a knock off looking bag when I have the original? My UK girls keep telling me the brand is a dud and I'm starting to agree with them. But if you like the look of the Medor and can't bring yourself to shell out the price, you can get it for a fraction of the original from Mulberry. The Maggie clutch is $995 in snakeskin, Mulberry Maggie Clutch in Polished Goatskin $595

Update: Hi all, I was sent an email from the Mulberry team explaining the hardware-- it is actually inspired by a vintage British military/school bag and the resemblance to Hermes was coincidental.

The Mademoiselle Chain -- Chanel Flap Bag

chanelmademoisellelink.jpg

I am having a slump of sorts... am just so bored because there is a lack of great bags this season. Am I right or am I right? Seriously, it's time to re-examine the core luxury brands for my needs because I am just not feeling it elsewhere. And there is nothing more core in luxury than Chanel. Hello-- what could be more iconic than the chain and flap bag? Maybe the new chain and flap bag? That's right, Chanel's new chain calfskin flap bag is aptly named the Mademoiselle and is a rock and rollin' rendition of the original classic. $2,575 at Chanel boutiques and Chanel.com  Or call Alexis to order 214-520-1055

Givenchy Melan: Snob or Slob

givenchymelan.jpgI don't know what to make of Givenchy's Melan Bag. It's at once interesting and bizarre. Rambo-esque bullet chain with a Mondrian-ish shaped bag tossed together with large links even and chains. Though strange looking, I am not repulsed by it. The color is great and the brushed goldtone hardware shows up beautifully against it. I just think it got too ambitious in the design room and didn't know what it wanted to be when it grew up. Its one redeeming quality is that the strap is removable (thank goodness!) and then you just have an origami style (and very large clutch) $1,775 at Barneys.com

What do you guys think? Snob or Slob?
