Smythson of Bond Street - Ali

user-pic
Smythson_Ali.jpgTo start off your week on the right foot, I give you Smythson's Ali for the fashionista pragmatist (if those exist).  This loosely structured hobo is inspired by Ali McGraw who exudes styles without an ounce of effort.  She worked at Harper's Bazaar and was Diane Vreeland's assistant at Vogue before becoming a huge star in Love Story.  This bag has all the relaxed and simple style she embodies.  This picture makes the bag looks strange and zig zagged but it is in fact just a bit slouchy with nubuck sides and a more structured nappa leather center.  I love the contrasting textures especially with the lizard clasp!  This is definitely your pick-up-and-go bag.  No fuss, no muss and waits on your personality to show through without distraction.  This will only be available at their boutiques the first week of September (the exotic trim prevents them from selling online) for $1900.  Call Antonio at the Two Rodeo boutique, 310 550 1901, he is super sweet and helpful!  Also comes in brown.

  • This bag does look different . I am worried of the nappa and nubuck combination. How does it stay clean? Although the bag looks different, it is uninteresting. It simply lacks that `something´ which would make it desirable ( for me at least)

  • I like Smythson's previous bags, especially Nancy and Maze ones. Nancy's a real classic. This one is definitely for someone more adventurous than myself!

Personally, I'm not a big fan of Smythson's newest handbag incarnations (excluding the "Maze" handbag, however - in Mocha! My goodness!). This handbag - the Ali - is no exception to the dislike, I'm saddened to say. The clasp which was first shown on the Nancy handbags is a bit too much for me (though interesting, the first time I saw it). The combination of luscious Nappa leather and Nubuck would surely be a delight to the feeling-senses, but the shape seems a bit too much for me. Slouchy? I love slouchy, but in this case, not so much. It's reminiscent of a sheep's stomach I once saw at some miscellaneous grocer's market. All-in-all, it would be a wonderful bag to carry around on an off-day, but personally, I wouldn't fancy it if you were trying to make a good first-impression (stomach et all).
At least it'd be heavenly to touch, however!

  • This looks bizarrely alien

  • Kelly, I love it!

  • Not sure on the above bag but do love the Nancy was tempted to get one but never seemed to get round to it!! Not sure about the nex Maze bag possibly a bit boxie....but boxie seems to be in at the moe when it comes to bags?!
