I fell in love with Oscar on Sex and the City and seeing that magenta dress on Carrie Bradshaw. The show was probably my first foray into wearable art. That dress was such an impeccable blend of classic glamour and modern whimsy! If only you were giving it away, Oscar!
I am not sure how I happened on your website; however both of you (Tina and Kelly) have a great sense of humor. After you described Mr. De la Renta's fashion style from clothing to his handbags, I became interested. I first fell in love with his design in this Goya handbag. It is simple yet elegant. Now I know why the SA in Bal Harbor did not understand my request for this handbag, it had not been released! I do not know Mr. De la Renta personally, however, he appears to be a gentlemen, which I admire. My mother went to school for fashion design in the mid 1970's. One afternoon I was looking through some of her patterns and designs - I came across a binder full of Oscar de la Renta clips and spreads. Yeah, he had my 17 year old self at the sequins. Those designs? They still work for today. Timeless.

I was in Saks Fifth Ave, when I saw an effortlessly chic young woman carrying an amazing clutch. I was so captivated by it that I stopped her to ask about it. She didn't speak English, but through vigorous pointing and hand gestures, I managed to get "Oscar De La Renta" out of what she was saying. I later found out that it was the Doheny clutch. Back in the 1970's, Vogue ran an article about Mr.De La Renta and his beautiful home in the islands. As a logger's daughter in a small town in Oregon, I could only dream of such a life. I fell in love with the idea of simplicity and taste that seemed to live in the life of the mind; style that didn't require money, just an education of the eye to appreciate beauty. I would love to own such a beautiful bag.
I fell in love with Oscar de la Renta like so many young girls by reading Vogue. It was a fantasy to see all his beautiful designs and dream of wearing one someday. i have kept up with his collections vicariously and although I do not have the financial means to be outfitted in O, I still have my fantasies and love his art.

For me it was his perfume. I always wore his namesake perfume in high school back in the mid-80's until I discovered his follow-up scent, Ruffles in college. To this day, it remains my all time favorite even though it has been discontinued. Please Mr. de la Renta, bring back Ruffles!
I think I just always knew Oscar de la Renta's name, but fell in love with his dress along with Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City. More recently, I really loved Jenna Bush's wedding dress. It is such a elegant dress with perfect lines.
Although I’m not a US resident (how unfair, given this is about Oscar!), I wanted to say that while growing up in Singapore didn’t necessarily give much access to luxury or aesthetic fashion, I associate Oscar’s clothes and clientele with a sophistication that comes from combining a public image with a private identity. I love the tactile nature of his fabrics and design- its controlled contrasts are a metaphor for the diversity and self-assuredness of modern women in their ethnicity, social responsibility, relationship with nature, children and ambition. To me, Oscar’s work is a celebration of being timeless, being a lady who feels like a princess. The singular piece that I consider ‘a statement’ is the bright canary yellow dress with the full skirt and hem of black flowers. I’ve had the runway photo of it on my board for years!
I am a woman from a small town in Wyoming. Just the name Oscar de la Renta represents almost the same thing as the city of New York. The moment I fell in love with Oscar De La Renta was the evening Penelope Cruz stepped on the red carpet at the 2005 Academy Awards. Dressed in her luxurious buttery yellow gown with the beautiful bow on the back, she was pure perfection! That was the night she became a star!
I bought my first piece in a consignment store when I was seventeen: a mens blazer. I could barely tell Prada from Pucci, but Oscar fascinated me. Consequently, my love of fashion started with that blazer – I fell in love with Oscar, and then I fell in love with clothes.
It was the first time when I passed by Oscar de la Renta's boutique at Wynn hotel in Vegas that attracted me so. Even though I was only 17 during that december, those dresses on the window amazed me so much that I literally stood there looking at one particular dress. It was a simple black gown. But it had frills on the lower parts, and side pockets. I know I can only daydream because i can never afford such couture dresses. I am just glad that I can tell this directly to Monsieur Oscar de la Renta, and that is good enough for me :)

As I eagerly browsed the fall 2005 collections when I was 15, I was disappointed that I had not found a collection with a striking, passionate identity. Then, I found Oscar’s collection, and in my mind the models were gliding down the runway like autumn nymphs, fully embodying what it meant to be a woman in touch with all of her senses. Since then, I feel the same; Oscar designs his clothes for women to really feel, to understand herself and the world around her, and I’m in love to this day!
I fell in LOVE with the GREAT iconic of all time ODLR in 2001 when SJP wore that shimmering champagne gown-it just simply took my breath away....ever since then I LOVE everything Oscar!!

When I was ten, my mother wore an Oscar dress to a gala. She put it on, and in that moment, she became much more than my mom. She looked beautiful, and the dress captured her spirit. It was the perfect dress for the perfect moment.

My first experience with Oscar de la Renta was a life-changing, love-at-first sight gift I recieved from my mother for my bat mitzvah. She decided it was time I matured into a woman in more than one respect, and bestowed upon me a beautiful carry-on bag for travel. Even as a 12-year old, I understood the beauty and tastefulness of the piece and tried to imitate my mother in how I held it and cared for it. As with many of Oscar's instant classics, the bag is every bit as beautiful now as it was then. It is timeless, somehow being both cutting-edge while remaining clear of the overly-trendy or overly commercial. I hope to grow my collection and one day pass on the tradition and the stunning pieces as my mother has with me.

In 2003 I was about to graduate high school and I had no idea what career path I wanted to pursue. I had always had a love of fashion but not being artistically inclined I wasn't sure what avenues I could explore. I remember watching Access Hollywood one May evening for their coverage of the CFDA awards and I was dying to see what Sarah Jessica Parker, my fashion muse would be wearing. She came down the red carpet in the most elegant pale peach gown I had ever seen. I instantly fell in love with the color, the cut, the fabric, and most importantly with the way Sarah Jessica Parker carried herself wearing that beautiful dress. Upon discovering it was Oscar de la Renta, I began to furiously study his work, and fell in love with each piece a little more than the one before, including the beautiful dress that became the focal point of one Sex and the City episode. It was this moment alone that inspired me to apply to FIT, so thank-you Mr. de la Renta. When I first saw the Goya bag I literally gasped as I believe it is the most stunningly beautiful bag I have ever laid eyes on, and I would be so honored to even be in the presence of it, let alone own one.

I had just begun painting when I stumbled upon a French Vogue (lucky me). I was enthralled with de la Renta's designs. His use of fabric, texture, and color to create an entire item was brilliant. I could see how he sees colors like a painter. Painters see colors and textures in unexpected hues and depths. He sees the colors that most people miss and combines them into works of art. I was eight years old and my mom took me for my first trip to NYC. She took me to Sak's and bought the most wonderful purse I had ever seen. It smelled good, it felt good, and it made my farm wife momma look good. She told me then, " Always buy good shoes and a good bag and you can dress in flour sack dresses and still look like Park Avenue". I never forgot it. When I was six or seven years old, our neighbour gave me a massive stack of Vogue magazines. I remember very clearly a gorgeous photo of a model wearing what struck me as the most beautiful black dress in the world, walking down a city street. I memorised every detail of that photo--the way the model stood, the buildings behind her, and especially every visible detail of the dress. For a little girl growing up in rural Australia, it represented a glamourous life that I knew I wanted someday. 1985. I was attached to a military base on the eastern seaboard(US). The base hospital had a gift shop that sold a few exclusive items; Mr. La Renta's perfume was one of them. It was heavenly! What a luxury to have for myself, a quietly elegant scent with such subtlety. I've never felt more beautiful.

My best friend used to wear the perfume. It smelled so good! I still remember the coat she wore at the time and the perfume. Also I have a magazine clipping of the cutest white one-piece bathing suit with a black band and black bow tie at the top by Oscar de la Renta. I saved it because it was so beautiful.

The first time I fell in love with Oscar de la Renta was when I was a teenager in the and I used to go through my mothers scarf collection. She owned a few that where so beautiful. She could not afford expensive designer clothing so she splurged on her "finishing touches" instead. She had the most beautiful scarves! My mother has since passed away and her collection has now been split between my two daughters. They now wear the scarves because they are truely timeless fashion!
What I like about Mr. de La Renta is the fact that he contributed a lot of money toward the construction of a school in his native Dominican Republic. Not only a great designer, but a great citizen.
