Jil Sander Ashanti Pocket Tote $1295; Lanvin Padova Sac$2160
I did not have bags as cool as this when I was going to school, but then again we also didn't have wireless internet (yes, that's right, go ahead and make fun of how ancient we are). I didn't think to be very practical so my nice bags couldn't function going to class. Well, you will now benefit from my new found wisdom =) I chose bags that are practical but above all else, totally hip! I kept all the colors dark/patent so that these can wear well after you graduate and can go right into your professional life. These are also big enough for your laptop, if they are under 13" wide (like a MacBook). And all are big enough for notebooks - I never walked around with text books and I doubt they will fit but for your backs' and bags' sake, I would just not read them (just kidding! .... but not really).
My first pick is the Jil Sander Ashanti Pocket Tote. Well, just look at the big outer pocket, I know how you kids love to chew gum and pop breath mints - you gotta keep them handy when the hottie football player comes to chat. It is also has that bit of edge you want to maintain while you're young and full of attitude. Love it! And if you are the fierce fashionista on campus, you MUST have the Lanvin Padova Sac in patent Marine. How fabulous is this? I mean, forget school bag, this bag will rock any girl's wardrobe.

Givenchy Wrinkled Patent Sac $1495; Dolce & Gabbana Gaia Tote $1275
Another bag that will make you strut through campus with attitude is the Givenchy Wrinkled Patent Sac. The shopper style is perfect for school and the trendy textured patent will allow you to get away with those sweats that are so comfy and shabby. The Dolce & Gabbana Gaia Tote is another that will allow the bag to speak for you when you are not as dolled up as time permits. I know, usually not a huge D&G fan but this one is sans logo and those big slouchy pockets will prove to be useful for things too long to list.

Pierre Hardy Cabas Nappa Tote $1655; Chloe Pearl leather shoulder bag $1,275
I love my Pierre Hardy, and will recommend it to everyone who needs a super functional and LIGHT bag. The soft nappa is a little tough to maintain but in black I am sure it is less noticeable than my beige. But for carrying your entire apartment around with you, this air weight tote will be your BFF. And of course, it is uber chic. The Chloe Pearl leather shoulder bag is kind of interesting in that it is not something I would normally feature here, but for the alternative chick who runs protests and demonstrations, this cross body bag will come in handy when running from authority.
Miu Miu Classic slouchy tote $1095; Pauric Sweeney Patent leather bag
$1410
I admit this Miu Miu slouchy tote is boring and not anything to swoon over but it is highly functional and definitely serves the purpose. It is also the bag most likely to make it to the office with you when you graduate so it makes a wise investment. The Pauric Sweeney Patent
, however is nowhere near boring, is one of my favorites of all time and has all the edge and spunk you need. Plus in black patent, you can go ahead and run with your latte, spills clean right up with a quick wipe.

And if you plan on throwing your laptop into your bag, do not even think about it without a sleeve! So many things can go wrong. Plus with these totally cute sleeves (forgot the boring black neoprene ones!) you will want to use it. The design is only on one side but the thickly quilted interior is what got me! I feel so safe knowing my entire existence will not get deleted while sloshing around in my bag. At Acme Made, $65 for 13" and $85 for 17".

good picks! i really like all of these, especially the lanvin, pierre hardy and miumiu.
for the price, these must be students who don't require a student loan...but nice bags anyway
Wow! Thanks for the thorough review Kelly!
Hot Picks! I love everything about both of these bags...(except the price)
:(
Like the previous posters have said, the bags are gorgeous, however you neglected the salient feature of students: we're poor. This list is fine for the trust fund babies, but for the majority of students who need to take out student loans, these bags are ridicously out of our price range.
The blue Lanvin patent is great. I like color.
Hi everyone ,sorry, a little out of context, but I have a Bottega Veneta NEW BALL BAG in RED/PINK Cranberry for sale. Brand New never worn at all. Very nice totes. But, $1,000+ designer totes for students? Are you kidding?

Kelly, this is kind of off-topic, I have too many bags with gold hardware but no everyday bag with silver hardware. Could you please recommend an everyday bag (doesn't have to be that big) with silver hardware? I love the Lanvin but it is a bit out of my price range :(
Thanks!!
Hi Girlies,
I know this is off topic but does anyone know if the CHANEL 2.55 comes in black leather with gold chains? Please help! I'm looking for it but was told it hasn't been made since 2005???
When I was at uni, I couldn't even afford bags like that. I like the laptop cases, they're more reasonable (price wise) for students.
I love the Chloe, Lanivn and Miu Miu ones, they're not overly fussy and loud.

Crystal-try Nordstrom in downtown Seattle. I think they may have the 2.55 with gold hardware.

Not personally in need for these types of bags. But if I absolutely had to choose one,it would be the Lanvin. Luckily I don´t have to choose.
This part made me laugh:
"The Chloe Pearl leather shoulder bag is kind of interesting in that it is not something I would normally feature here, but for the alternative chick who runs protests and demonstrations, this cross body bag will come in handy when running from authority."
Hahaha! As if the alternative chick running from authority would be caught dead wearing something from a designer house, let alone something made of animal carcus. I realise that line was tongue in cheek, but that's what made it even better. Kelly, you're hilarious.
loving the Jil Sander...
Hilarious!! I love patent!! Im a science major and theres NO way I'd be caught dead on campus without a sweet tote for my stockpile of books.
You folks are seriously completely insane. $1500 will buy my school books for a year. I'm also not going to carry a bag to school which sends the message that I'm not serious about my work as these do, never mind the sheer impracticality of them. Have you folks never heard of microfiber or canvas? - a few hundred dollars will buy a bag that can actually carry the weight of my laptop & books & stand up the the abuse that a day on campus entails.
I just read your newer post and love that you adressed the issue that everybody has been bringing up- that these are not affordable for the regular college student.
It's cool that you read the comments.
I'd adore to bring the Lanvin with me to university in September, but I believe that i'd have to take out a student loan to do so xD
Maybe next year =] for now there's always Diesel.
Two words- ridiculous and recession.
What type of world do you live in where you think that $1000+ bags for college students to just bop around in, makes sense. It must be a nice, recession free world that you are living in.
Absolutely love them. However, like everyone else it's ridiculous for a normal college student and not exactly ideal for the roughing bags go thru during the day of a student.
Is patent leather still a go? Classic snob or will it be a slob in a few?
