Simon Doonan; Isabel Toledo's Showroom
The Couture Council of the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology is awarding Isabel Toledo with their 2008 Award for Artistry of Fashion on September 3. In celebration of that award Glenda Bailey, editor-in-chief of Harper’s Bazaar and Valerie Steele, director and chief curator of the Museum at FIT hosted a cocktail party at the Toledo’s atelier in Manhattan’s garment district. The event was attended by Mathew Modine, Simon Doonan, Cynthia Rowley, etc. We were invited but could not attend so we sent our local New York writer, Eva Tsou.

Valentino, $1095; Alexis Mobille, $1008
It is really quite mind blowing that there would be two of these! But the Alexis Mabille makes a bit more sense being that he makes tuxedos and bow-ties and this is just a tangent tie-in. So it leads me to wonder if Valentino has been plagiarizing? It doesn't really matter, this look is for such a specific clientele who don't stoop to bicker about such trifles. The Alexis Mabille has 2 zippers, one on each side of the bow, which is an improvement on the Valentino. It is $1008 at Couture Lab which has the most interesting collection. Totally worth a gander. So, which do you prefer?

I am conflicted over the Ruffled Clutch bag from Prada for Fall. It's not the most hideous thing I've seen but something about it is really odd. I almost want to like it because I think Miuccia is so creative and amazing and the ruffles are kind of delicate and pretty in a strange way but at the same time-- it reminds me of Dumbo ears which is just too hard to ignore. I feel like the bag is going to fly off at a moment's notice! There are also matching shoes, in case the flaps on the bag are not enough to allow you to float into the open air, click these suckers together and I bet you end up where ever you want to. By the way, Prada ready to wear kicks ass this season-- but none of which I would wear with this. Prada Bag $1,695, Shoes $895 both at Saks.com. This is a bag you'll either love or hate, so I want to know-- Snob or Slob?

The most exciting bag off the Hermes Fall runway is the Jypsière bag. A perfect balance of the timeless design of the birkin combined with an ultra modern messenger style, I have a feeling it will make a major splash with sporty fashionistas worldwide (I know Kelly is going to flip for it!). It is fashioned after a hunting satchel in which Jean Paul Gaultier describes as "a functional, nonchalant bag slung across the shoulder, combined with the iconic details of the Hermes bags"* As with the birkin and kelly, the straps are best left open so you can lift the flap easily. The strap is adjustable and removeable though this is not something you would want to clutch. It will be available in multiple colors but I love the Graphite and Olive clemence versions best. Both colors are rich and deep, perfect for Fall! The sueded crocodile is also a texture that I am dying to experience, it is so lush! Jypsière in leather 34cm is $6,800 at Hermes boutiques. Call Craig at 214-528-0197 to order. There is also a 37cm for our manbag snobs!

I have to admit, it's the color that pulled me in. And it is called "ultra-violet"! How fab and apropos is that? It is not merely violet, this screaming bright color is ultra violet! And the bag itself is quite fab as well. The young and trendy bowler is a hit by itself but add those textured lines and the subdued black hardware, it is one hot babe! The bag is gathered at the bottom to give extra girth so you get to stuff it silly without adding bulk (except for the extra bulk you are adding, of course). Before you say yay or nay, consider that this is only $475, making this our extra cheap Cheap Thrill of the week. I have to be honest though, I have seen pretty badly worn Philip Lim bags on the street and I know they haven't had it since childhood because the bag has only been out for one season. People beat up their bags pretty badly, but even so, a quality bag should last at least one season. But then again, I am really hard on my lesser bags - they don't stay pristine like my precious ones do. Anyway, something to consider if you fall in love with this ultra hip, ultra cute, ultra violet sweetie. 3.1 Phillip Lim Fall Collection at eluxury.
(Wolf whistle)-- Hellloooo, beauty! Trust Bottega Veneta to make my heart flutter time and again-- the Noce Ostrich trimmed in crocodile is a tear inducing work of perfection... I am seriously in lust! Less is really more when it comes to Bottega! No fancy hardware or frills, just clean lines and the best quality skin an animal can offer. Animal activists will crucify me for saying this but I can not help my love of soft skins, especially if it is exotic. If it's any consolation, most animals used are farmed providing an entire industry which stimulates the local economy not to mention the food they provide. (okay, I am stretching here-- I do feel a bit guilty at times.)
But back to the utterly supple and gorgeous Noce bag, it is the perfect shade of luggage brown in ostrich with just a touch of attitude from the chocolate crocodile trim. Notice how the subtle little crocodile buttons clasp the straps to the bag, is that not just divine? Exposed zippers on bags usually dangle at the ends and look sloppy, see how they've attached it to side straps, talk about form and function. God, I love this bag! I feel like a dirty old man staring at a luscious hot chick, I want I want I want! This is all I need for Fall, really, I won't buy the other 25 bags I swore I had to have. This is it. I will treat myself for my birthday coming up next month if no one else will buy it for me. $5700 at Bottega Veneta boutiques. Call Jasenka for more details 214-265-0136.
