Christian Louboutin with Bag Snob Kelly and her signed City Girl Platforms
I was at the Christian Louboutin personal appearance at Barneys in Beverly Hills yesterday. What can I say? I was starstruck and giddy to meet the man who took women with a simple shoe fetish and turned it into a cult following. You can image what the scene was like at Barneys with his most devout in frenetic worship mode, shopping like it was a 90% off sale. Well, it was full price and it was to get his signature heart signature on those signature red soles. If there was one day in my life when I felt lucky to have giant feet, it was today because I had no trouble getting everything in my size (40, thank you very much). The other regular sized feet gal there, including my friend Cindy who is a 38, had no luck because everything was sold out. They were all frantically searching and trying on, willing to get anything in their size. A girl next to me bought the very unpractical Anemone stiletto pumps with a giant bow in the back as a last resort (she had a hard time walking in them). I happily brought home two gorgeous pairs that makes me feel fiery hot and sexy just knowing I have them: Marilou woven sandals ($870) in pewter and the City Girl slingback platforms ($795)
in luggage.
As you can imagine, the line to meet Monsieur Louboutin was quite long, at one point it took shoe fans 1.5 hours; so I felt bad taking up too much of his time for our one on one interview and photo op, but I did get in a few questions that he was more than happy to answer. (A big thank you to Shawna, PR Director for Christian Louboutin, for arranging the interview!)
The iconic shoe line is not trend oriented; it never was and that is not how he designs, so I asked him what his process is. When designing a shoe, he said he thinks of the person who is going to wear the shoe and the attitude behind it. He does not consider what you wear with it, “never the outfit”, he said. That makes sense, he focuses on the shoes, and let’s be honest here, when you’ve got Loubies on, who is really looking above the ankles? Actually, people are just looking at your red soles

I wish I could wear heels all day long and everyday, but my back problem prohibits it (I spent my entire 20′s in nothing but mile high heels and I am paying for that now). I wear flats and there is nothing sexy or attitude altering about flats and I wanted to know how he feels about them. I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised by his answer, “I love flats, I have always liked them”. Woohoo! Now that I know Monsieur Louboutin approves, I can laugh off my judgmental snotty heel clad friends as I clunk around comfortably in my Robert Clergerie flats. In fact, he loves very flat flats on those with long, big feet! I am indeed a happy girl today (even though I did just buy 5 inch and 4 inch heels).
He is actually quite pragmatic even though you would think he is fussy and fanciful – he is after all THE shoe god and he does design fanciful shoes. When I asked him for a tip on how women can glam themselves up quickly, his initial response was, “what do you mean by tip?”. I quickly reverted from my American slang and said, “what is your advice”, to which he replied, “clean your hair” (oh good, I did remember to do that). I guess you can say he finds it important to be polished from your head down to your toes!

Christian Louboutin select Fall Collection, available June/July/August

Fantastic pic, Kel! Love the new hair do.
I am so sorry to have missed this, just adore Christian Louboutin- but am sitting on a beach right now and yes, brought several pairs of Loubies with me!!! I have the City Girl sling backs in luggage, too– but they are not signed
I bought mine last week, the last pair in my size at Barneys on Madison. Phewwww. Had I waited I am sure it would have sold out at this event
xoxo
any possibility of Monsieur coming to London any time soon??
Hi Lina! We will contact Monsieur Louboutin’s PR team and let you know if he will be doing any personal appearances in London! xo
I almost flew down with my sister from SF when you guys mentioned it last week. Love Christian Louboutin!!! X
You look beautiful Kelly! And you’re so lucky too! Great post and pictures, love it!
That sounds like a fabulous time. Kelly, I know what you mean I wear a size 41. Louboutins also run really small. Will you want to wear your shoes so the signature won’t wear off?
BS Kelly, your make-up looks great. Did you do it the way you described on Beauty Snob last week? If so, I am going back to re-read that piece.
You are so lucky to have met THE Christian Louboutin. Those city heels are to die for as well! I also have some back problems, and I am only 24! This comes from working in the health field where I am working with a lot of patients who need physical help to get up and move around in rehab. I love my job, but it limits my heel-wearing. But whenever I go out, I love to throw on my CL’s and walk with my head high and sleep with a heat pad under my back by bedtime.
Hi Kelly!
How do you pronounce his last name? I have heard my sister, who is French-speaking, pronounce it completely different from the SA at Barney’s (heard 2 more different pronunciations there). Can you put an end to this debate?
I’d just love to know whose dress Kelly is wearing! Or maybe it’s not a dress . . . anyway, it’s gorgeous. Can you reveal the designer? Thanks!
Kelly,
How are you ever going to wear those shoes? I wouldn’t let them see the light of day! I would just put them on a dresser and stare at them all day long. Or maybe as a centerpiece on my coffee table. You can’t wear a signed shoe by CL! That would be like washing your cheek after George Clooney kissed it!
Enjoy!
Lauren
I was not going to reveal what dress I was wearing but to stay true to my belief that you really CAN spend all your money on bags (and shoes of course), I am going to let out the secret. This was a $49 dress I bought at Kohl’s online. Yes, that’s right, I said it here, Kohl’s. It is super cute, can you believe it? I get compliments left and right with this on. I wore this with my turquoise Birkin! =)
And yes, I did in fact wear these today and plan on wearing it all the time. I love these shoes, it is conflicting but I couldn’t just buy these and not wear them, signed or not.
Love,
Bag Snob Kelly
Yes–that dress is definitely both super cute and sold out! Kelly, you look terrific in that photo and I LOVE that you shared the dress info. Good for you–no dress snob! And we love you for that.
I actually got that dress last week at Kohl’s on sale for $21! Imagine my surprise seeing on Kelly. Great minds think alike
