Jean Paul Gaultier Satin Marin Clutch: Snob or Slob?

I am feeling completely uninspired by the bags I am seeing tonight. I mean, just take a look at the bag?/coffee mug?/ceramic art? thing from Jean Paul Gaultier above. I don't even know what it's supposed to be, a mermaid reclining on a rock while a giant octopus sneaks up to devour her? It's so weird and seems like a random image from one of his nightmares. Which would actually be cool, but not at $1,295 (for less than that you can get a gorgeous Bottega knot clutch!). I know this one is headed for the 75% off discount bin; at which time some of you may want to grab it-- just for its queerness and conversational value at parties. I find it bizarre that JPG-- whose ready to wear, shoes and Haute Couture that I adore, can not translate his brilliance into his handbags (even his JPG birkin was a miss, it's been discontinued. But I do love the Lindy). Which tells me bags are really hard to design and we should probably abandon our own pipe dreams of a bag line one day. But enough of me, what do you think? Snob or Slob? • i like it from a graphic standpoint. if it was a throw pillow i'd totally get it! just probably not a clutch.

  • I would actually really like to see a Bag Snob line some day. :/

  • In one word: Disgusting.

  • this is a SLOB! i agree with Mette, it's disgusting and i am offended they would charge $1,200 for something i could buy from the discount fabric warehouse and glue on a box myself.

  • I agree with Kamo in that the design is nice. As a bag, not so much. I think there are just too many bags out there. There are companies that just can't get a hit bag. Take for instance, Furla. I love their company. I think their leathers are gorgeous. I think their colors work well also. They just cannot get the right bag to make them take off. There hasn't been a perfect shape yet. They need their own motorcycle bag, quilted chain bag, birkin bag, saddle bag. JPG is totally one of these designers. Even Dolce & Gabanna. I've never found a Dolce bag that I cannot live without. A few weeks ago, I was in the Macy's in the Topanga Mall. The amount of bad bags out there is astonishing. The sale bin was just a mess of rivets, lace, zippers, denim, patches, pvc, tassels, and patent leather. And that was all on one bag. I don't think this bag is in that category, but it's definitely not going to be a hit, and it's definitely not worth 1,295 dollars.

  • Wall art? Yes. Clutch? Not so much.

  • Definitely, Slob. I don't mind the pattern as much as I mind the shape. Sometimes designers try too hard. I can hardly believe anyone pay big bucks for this bag when you can find much cuter purses for under $100.

  • Eeek, tacky throw pillow is the right description.

  • SLob~This looks like something you'd see in a cheesy restaurant... though I do like the shape of the clutch.
