I meant to post this last week but with our server down for two days, I completely forgot! So here it is, my favorite ways to tie and knot scarves on bags. The blue jean birkin above is tied with a limited edition cotton Hermes scarf. I found that the cotton ones were easiest to work with but I like the way the silk scarves hang better. The style above may be done by folding your scarf diagonally (2 inch thickness), then tie a knot on the handle-- keeping one side four inches longer than the other, pull through a single bow instead of two and voila, instant chic-ness. See more styles after the jump!

I folded the silk scarf above straight across (2 inch thickness), tied a knot, left one side a couple of inches longer, and pulled through a single bow as the one above. This is nice for the Lindy because it's a shorter bag and you don't want too long of ends dangling about.

For days when I'm feeling girly and silly, I tie a regular double bow with a twilly scarf. I love twilly scarves for bags because they're already the perfect width and easy to tie. The right side is a single bow achieved with the same instructions above.

I generally do not tie any scarves on my exotic birkins because why compete with the beautiful details in croc and ostrich with a hundred dollar scarf!?!? But I tied this on to show you how great an orange bag looks with a pink multi colored scarf. I love contrasting colors, pink and orange really looks fantastic together!
The same may be achieved with a Kelly bag (I didn't have time to do the Kelly photos but will load it up another time) or any other bags in your closet! You can pull out an outdated bag, throw on a scarf in the color of the season, and you'll look stylish and current! And it doesn't have to be an Hermes scarf, either. Any scarf will do, I am just an Hermes addict.
Hi Tina!
It has been so long since I've posted. Ok, I think it's been a week. It's been a long week though! :) Anyway, all of these look great! A scarf is such a great accessory. I remember in the movie Le Divorce they said there are over 400 French words for scarf. I find this hard to believe, but it's a romantic (and very French) idea. I agree with you about the scarves against the exotic skins, but still it works! Then again, doesn't Hermes always work? I'm saving now to make my first Hermes purchase on my birthday, June 29. I'm taking the following Monday off to down to Rodeo drive and pick something up in the Box Calf. I'm thinking a Globetrotter agenda holder. I wonder if they do the Paris Bombay in a box calf? Anyway, my journey to Hermes has been quite an adventure, an adventure I'm hoping will continue for years to come! Love you!
thanks!! been waiting for the longest...i am excited to try this on my new H scarves... love the lindy w/ the orange contrast =)
PJH- I am excited to be a part of your very first Hermes adventure. I am certain it is the beginning of a lifetime journey in the wonderful world of Hermes :)
hunniebunch, let me know how it goes! xoxo
Hi Tina,
Am considering buying a 30 cm Lindy (my friend will be in Paris in a few days) and am deciding what colour/leather to get. Most of my clothes are white, black & red. Already have a black Bottega hobo, grey/iron Bottega sloane, black Loewe brisa nappa aire bag, red Tods T bag and white Tods shopping bag. Any advice? What are the available colours for the Lindy?
Rgds, TSYA.
Wowee, thanks for the photos and techniques! I especially love the twilly on the white birkin! You have fabulous style and amazing bags =)
my mother and sisters all agree that you are the ultimate authority on Hermes and love the way you curate your Hermes pieces! you are an amazing source for Hermes info! we love Bag Snob !
The white birkin is stunning!
I remember you guys posted a photo of your collection of Chanel/Hermes pieces that you've picked up over the years. I'm sure that your collection has been updated since then. Could you guys post another photo or gallery of your beautiful bags sometime?
Hi Susan,
That is a great idea, considering I've picked up half a dozen Hermes bags since then! I leave for vacation on Wednesday and then straight on to New York to film our show. I will put it on my to do list for end of May.
xo
it's amazing what a scarf can do to make wonderful purses "pop" even more. i love it! thanks for sharing, tina.
also, you mentioned you'll be on your way to NYC to "film our show". did i miss a few posts? what are you filming, pray tell? something fabulous, i'm sure!
thanks for these great tips! i'm a new H fan and i can't wait to get myself a twilly! ;-)
I generally don't like the way the Birkin looks (OMG :O BLASPHEMY!), but with the scarf it just gives it the extra flair it needs! (to me; I'm sure everyone else will tell me I'm crazy).
Dear Tina,
thank you for the tips. Love your blue birkin, please kindly advise what size is that?
Thank you.
I must be about the only one not thrilled about the scarves on expensive bags? I like beautiful scarves, but don´t feel comfortable wearing one. A wonderful pashmina works better for me worn with a sleveless dress.
Thank you, Tina. These are fantastic tips! You are the best and have amazing style! You should do a seminar on how to update a wardrobe, just a thought for you =) I know all of my friends and I would attend! We'd fly anywhere, too!
Thanks Tina. I'm very excited for it. I think I'm going to turn into one of those crazy box calf-obsessed collectors. I will definitely keep you updated. :)
Okay, I love Hermes but I don't have much yet. I got my first Twilly last year in the Hong Kong International Airport (I had to find a good use for all the HKD I had left over from my trip! =D). I love tying it on various bags. I don't have my Kelly yet, but I will!
I've been coveting a full sized scarf for years, but I can't decide! They're all so beautiful!
Dear Tina,
Ur blog is a masterpiece of all glorious carrywear! I'm in the handbag-design industry, and I must say, the daily insights.. are my must-read accompaniments over my morning decaf!
Oh, btw..I love how an Hermes scarf can be twirled & twisted around one of the Birkin's handles. It adds a casual edge to the hideous amount paid for both. Try it. Ruthless, yet divine ;)
