Look-a-Like, YSL vs MoMA

moma_paintbag.jpgYSL_raspail.jpg

Our faithful reader Janet alerted us to this MoMA tote bag - a total knockoff of the YSL Raspail painted canvas. It's so nice to have our readers doing the work for us! Now we can just focus on the bitching =) Now, you all know we love YSL but there are limits to everything and the love ends with this splatter canvas tote. The strange thing is, I like the MoMA knockoff, not only because it is $18 compared to the $995 YSL (it is on sale now for $895, jeez big whoop, it is still overpriced by at least $800) but because it is appropriate for what this really is and should be, a throwaway grocery store cotton tote. Of course the YSL is higher quality, it is structured with a gusset and piping, and the interior is immaculate, but that only proves my point even more, why go through all that trouble for something that is only useful for unimportant events like carrying magazines to the bathroom and pot luck to your in-laws? The one good thing though, MoMA has made the YSL brand a part of pop culture and that is definitely a plus for my "real" YSL bag collection. The MoMA tote is available at their online store and YSL Medium Raspail is on YSL.com.

Ten Bags under $1,000

You asked and we listened. Here are Ten bags under $1,000 that you are always requesting. Not to sound like a snob or anything but who knew this price point was so hard to stay under? I cheated on one bag that was around $1200-- it was just too cute to pass up. I noticed a pricing trend, most bags were under $600 or under $1200. Next time I will do a top 12 under $1200, that should be easier. I stayed away from Marc Jacobs bags and other obvious choices but discovered some cool indie designers along the way, this was fun! Enjoy~
1. Luella Agnes Shoulder Bag $920- this shimmering bag is an eye catcher, and the quilted snakeskin is so edgy and fun! Very 70s and London girl about the city. Metallic is a nice neutral for all the bright and bold dresses we're seeing this season. At Net a Porter

Valentino Petale Dome Bag

Looks like Valentino hired a new bag designer, Charo. Who else would come up with this ridiculous bag? As if appliques on bags aren't bad enough, they've upped the ante by making the bag itself one giant floral applique. And of course it is red so that no one will be able to overlook you major misstep in judgment. You know, the Valentino Histoire bag is ok, I personally don't like it but at least it has a look to it and definitely went through some sort of thought out design process, but honestly the rest of the Valentino bag collection has just been about over embellishing...with floral appliques and the occasional monstrous bow. Perhaps there are those women who love the Valentino name and will buy it just because, but if they really want to get a handle on the bag market and appeal to actual bag lovers, they need to stop making corsages. At Bergdorf Goodman for $2495, pre-order.

Mulberry Agyness Bag

What a wonderful departure from its stiff and military shaped bags! This is my favorite Mulberry bag of the season; I love the slouchy and soft lines-- it's delightfully feminine yet still packs a strong punch with braided details. mulberryagyness.jpgYou can still distinguish it as a Mulberry with its signature hardware and subtle Bayswater accents but updated with boho chic style, it is so fresh and new! I am all about slouchy again, after a few seasons of structured and refined shapes via frame bags and skinny jeans, the inner bohemian in me is ready to step out! Bring on the bell bottom pants and the hobo bags, I've got my platform Alaia shoes ready and I can't wait to rock! The Agyness bag comes in two sizes, large $1,595 and medium $1,395 at Net a Porter.
