The Politics of Bags

I was recently interviewed by the Dallas Business Journal and asked what bags I would pick for current candidates or candidates' wives. Kelly and I never discuss politics or religion on Bag Snob, but picking out bags is about fashion, no matter who it's for, right? So, here are my choices (The bags were chosen based on their fashion styles, and is in no way indicative of our political views.):

cindymccain.jpgwhitekellyostrich.jpg

Who: Cindy McCain

Bag: Hermes Kelly

Why: She seems very ladylike and looks like she goes to many luncheons and teas. The Kelly bag is a stylish, but conservative statement. It is a classic that will never go out of style.

michelleobama.jpgbottegatri.jpg

Who: Michelle Obama

Bag: Bottega Veneta Tri-compartment Tote

Why: She has young children, and a Bottega tote will be functional and stylish while campaigning and traveling with her husband or tending to her children. Bottega is the ultimate in quiet luxury and very appropriate for an aspiring First Lady.

hilaryclinton.jpgOstrich%20Doheny%20Clutch.jpg

Who: Hillary Clinton

Bag: Oscar de la Renta Doheny Clutch

Why: Because she doesn't seem like a woman who wants any fuss. The Doheny Clutch is a bold and powerful statement, but still feminine. It will carry her from luncheons to power meetings without missing a beat. It is large, and she'll be able to have her BlackBerry, notebooks, etc., with her at all times.

What about you? What bags would you choose for them?

  • I think your dead on with Obama and McCain. those bags would be perfect for them.

Hilary on the other hand, I see her with something more classic. Like the Lady Dior medium shopping tote in black

  • great choices,as always!
I would struggle with Hilary, she doesn't seem to have a style of her own,we all know what she used to look like in her 20's-horrible glasses and plaited skirts! Her current look is a work of stylist-apparently her legs aren't her best feature and it's not easy to disguise them in trousers not to mention skirts!
Doheny clutch seems perfect for her but she would probably prefer the white version, less ostentatious
    xoxo

  • I think you're right on. That Kelly with Cindy McCain would be perfect. It wouldn't surprise me if she already owned one or five. :) What's great about the way you've done this is that I can see these women with these bags. Hahaha. I'm with Jahpson a bit though on the Hillary choice. This bag definitely looks fussy. I'm not sure how designer she is. For her, I see more of a tote, something along the lines of a Hermes garden bag. I even see her with a Calvin Klein bag.

  • i just can't picture hillary rocking the doheny clutch, especially in orange ostrich skin...

  • Agree with the comments above, but i think hilary would choose something like a Tod's D-bag

  • hilary has been seen with a lot of color and I think she would go for the doheny clutch. she has worn Oscar de la Renta as a first lady, why not as the President? :)

perfect choices for mccain and obama.

  • You are right about Obama & MaCain. I don't know how to put Hillary. She seems neither here not there.

  • Clinton strikes me more as a classic black YSL tote kinda gal...

  • Love your picks for all but Clinton. I remember reading the intro from editor, Anna Wintour in this years Feb issue. She stated...

"Imagine my amazement when I learned that Hilary Clinton, our only female presidentail hopeful, had decided to steer clear of our pages at this point in her campaign for fear of looking too feminine. The notion that a contempory women must look mannish in order to be taken seriously as a seeker of power is dismaying."

With this being said, I guess my pick for her would be a gym bag..

  • According to the Humane Society of the United States, Hillary Clinton has done the most to advance animal rights. From that standpoint, I think she would be very comfortable with anything from Stella McCartney.

  • I actually imagine her with a black Chanel, the kind with no CC logo. Is that the reissue? Yeah and an extra large 2.55 one too.
