Hermes Scarf: Knotting Tips and Tricks

There is nothing more effortless than an Hermes scarf worn every which way. French women have it down. They toss it, knot it, twist it, and voila -- instant "Je ne sais quoi chic-ness." But don't fret! You, too, can achieve this look easily! Just follow these simple instructions for my favorite styles. I wear my scarves all summer long; on my bags, as belts, halter tops, tank tops, head wraps, skirts, you name it! They are so light and easy to travel with, so I never leave home without them. This is, by far, my favorite way to wear a scarf. It's really easy ... just criss cross the top, wrap around your neck, pull the bottom tight and wrap around your waist. Simple, yet so sexy! Pair it with white, wide-leg pants, and you'll be smokin'!

This is not as complicated as it looks. It does, however, require two scarves. I like buying two of the same pattern in contrasting colors to make it more interesting.

This is fab for cruise ships or beachside resorts. Toss it on under a lightweight cardigan or a boy blazer, and you're ready to rock!

The asymmetric is the most complicated style. You will have to practice a few times to get it, but, once you do, you'll love it because it's the most wearable.

I love wearing my scarves as belts. It's so easy to throw on a white t-shirt and white jeans and add a splash of bright color without too much thought! The last thing you want to do while traveling is "think" about your clothes. Bring a collection of scarves with you, so you can just toss, twist and go!

  • love it!! this is so incredibly helpful and stylish. i always buy scarves and never know how to tie them.

  • wow! this is great?! how about showing us tying it to bags?? i could never get the "scarf on bag" knot/look. =)

  • I was going to load up my bags with scarves on it but it got late last night. I'll do it later today so you'll have it for the weekend!
    xoxo

  • Amazing tutorial! Thanks.

  • i LOVE that hermes has a "playtime with your scarf" pdf on their website that shows you how to tie your scarves step-by-step, but i would love to see the scarves around your bags, tina!

  • Thank you so much! I always thought you needed a scarf ring to tie them into a halter top! I have the playtime w/ your scarf PDF's and the booklets that come w/ the scarves when you get them, but I've never seen these top three ways before.

Thank you Bag Snobs, I love you!!! And I have something to wear to brunch this Sunday!

  • Yeah, like the way you show the Hermes scarves. Really fresh !

  • Thank you Tina for the tips, you are simply the best.

  • You are the best! I needed a tutorial like this! Thank you, Tina. XX

  • One problem here...breasts. Looks great on paper, on me (or anyone else over a C cup)...not so much.

Also, I don't really have the same love affair with the style of French women...there are plenty of frumpy Frenchwomen running around over there, trust me, just as there are plenty of chic gals trodding down Madison Avenue every day. I wish we could move away from the "uber chic" look right now which just screams...help me, I'm trying way to hard to be chic!!!!!! (And I could use a good meal;)

Will take tips on tying them to bags though:)

  • I love this-- thanks! I always end up wearing the scarves as belts or around the neck, but I love the ideas about wearing them as a halter or assymetrical top. Superb.

  • HI girls,

These are from the exclusive Hermes Scarf travel "Cards" I got. They have limited supply and do not give them out so I thought I should share :)

I am a 32C and I wear this just fine, but I guess those more blessed would have a problem with the bandeau top style. The halter styles, however, work great with my friends who are D cups and curvy. You throw on a cardigan and it's done. :)

It's just so easy to pack and wear scarves and I don't have to spend time thinking about my wardrobe in the summer or while traveling. Which means I can spend more time focused on my family, not what I'm wearing.

    xoxo

  • I especially love the bustier one!

Does anyone know how to securely wrap the twilly scarf around the handle of the birkin/kelly bag? I've seen many people doing that, and I've tried, but it somehow is not as tight.

  • Melissa-

I totally understand how you feel. I am a 32 E and they are real. I can't find a bra that does not crumple after a few hours... I can just imagine what I would look like if I tried the scarf look. I would need to use about a dozen.

  • So fab! I'm going to a very preppy party this weekend and I've been trying to figure out what to wear. Now I think I'm going to go with me new pearls from Premiumpearl.com and an hermes scarf! Good thing the pearls were so affordable!

    • Now who would ever buy pearls from a company that spams and shills comments on others' blogs? PremiumPearl.com must be on really hard times to resort to spam. They also must believe consumers on the Internet are really, really stupid, because they write testimonials for themselves. If you Google their name nearly every result is a fake testimonial on a blog comment, just like the one above, or something that is "not so pretty" about them.

Companies that spam are companies that scam. Watch out for premiumpearl.com.

  • This is a wonderful post. SO helpful, I love the diagrams (where did you get them -did you make them?) I'm going to go scarf hunting right now for some huge ones I can twist and tie around like this! My fav: the most complicated -also the most chic. Defiantely worth the effort. Thanks again!
