YSL Embroidered Canvas Downtown
By Bag Snob Tina on March 25, 2008 6:00 am Tina Craig

It looks like both Tina and I need therapy. Either that or YSL is seriously paying us some big bucks to gush non stop about them (people at YSL, please email us if this sounds like something you would be interested in). Well, neither of us have discipline when it comes to YSL because I just bought the Marjorelle in blue patent, it is a different blue than the Muse blue but it is so bright and beautiful!! I love it!! Then I saw this picture of this embroidered Downtown on Elle.com and immediately picked up the phone to call my girl at the YSL boutique. It is so fun for Spring, I started fantasizing about how great would it be for the beach and for traveling!! Uh, turns out this is the mini version of the downtown, as in, it is in total, 6 inches tall (just slightly bigger than this actual picture). Useless you say? Not for my 3 year old daughter who would think it’s cool for about a day. Seriously, what is the meaning of this? I was told it was only done in that size and none of the buyers bought it so it will not be made. Gee, what a surprise. Just when we thought YSL could do no wrong. Well, just the merchandising was off, I would have totally gotten this in the medium Downtown, if it was about $875 (because it is canvas). Maybe instead of giving us money, they can hire us to merchandise for them.

Sorry Kelly,I really don’t get this bag,it looks very tacky to me. There’s too much going on,I’ve seen many bags that cost $20 and look pretty similar. Does Tina like it?

Still,it’s your bag and I hope you will love carrying it:)

Awww, I like it! If it was regular-sized and under a grand, I would buy it too for a beach or pool bag. It would be great for summer with a little sundress and some flat sandals. All that embroidery would make it cost prohibitive, I’m afraid, which is probably one of the big reasons none of the buyers picked it up. You know it’s bad when your own boutiques don’t want it, much less the major retailers.

I think it would be a fun summer beach bag, if it came in a normal size!

Not my taste, but I totally agree about the insaneness of the size- mini table display? What else could it possible be used for?

Ewe…I’m not a fan. Other than the recognizable YSL shape, the actual design is gaudy and offensive.

My darlings, where is the love? To answer your questions, no, I do not like this bag. It’s not my thing. But that’s no reason for all the hate… let’s try to be polite in our comments and keep it to the bags. (and I already removed the offensive ones per your request).

    Thanks lovelies. xo

Lina – read the entire post before commenting….it’s not Kelly’s bag, and she doesn’t like it b/c it is small.

I happen to not like the bag either. I can see the appeal as a large tote – strictly as a pool/beach bag – but I can think of other bags I’d like to spend my money on.

i kind of grow to like it. i would like it if it were bigger and maybe looked a little less like a fiesta. maybe if they took off the zig zags and swirls and just kept it with the embroidered flowers because you can see the masterwork in those.

    Hi Irena,

I thought I have been sharing my recent purchases! Well, I am happy to share again. I just got the YSL Marjorelle in blue patent – amazing! I got a beautiful Chanel python in buttery yellow in the classic flap style. And a really cool Sang A python in bone, the color is perfect for Spring. And that was just last week. We’ll see what’s in store for me when I go shopping tomorrow!

And I stand behind this bag (too bad I can’t have it), what’s a fashionista but one who gets overly criticized? I am flattered =)

    Love,

    Kelly

This is really awful! Sorry Kelly, I usually like the bags you pick but this is tacky. I am secretly relieved that it doesn’t come in a bigger size, for your sake!

But your other purchases sound great!

    Mette,

I was waiting to hear from you for this bag, but I didn’t think you would like it. I know you love YSL as do I, I am a little surprised. I did not like this bag at all.

Lori: I´m sorry if my comment of this bag surprised you! I am quite alert what I print. But this bag would be just a killer bag,if it would be normal sized. I like the the colors, the embroidery and it could be my tops for the summer, but not in mini-sized.WHY oh why did they make it not larger? My favorite naturally is YSL and I know it is partly due to to this guy from Berlin, who is so skilled that actually I only buy my YSL´s via him. All my bags are from Berlin. Actually I´m a bit ashamed that I have one Lanvin. Still-YSL is my favorite!!!

I’m traumatized at the sight of this bag! It’s overly, overly flashy and gaudy. But my real disagreement is the design. The shape of the YSL Downtown has slowly grown on me, but I can’t understand why they would use the shape of the Downtown to feature this flowery print. It’s very angular and does not suit the flowery-ness of the embroidery. If you’re going to go with a boho vibe, choose a bag shape that accentuates this!

I’m also surprised that YSL would create such a bag. I know designers need to pay attention to the trends and create marketable bags along those lines, but this bag doesn’t seem “YSL” to me at all.
