Katherine Kwei Donna Watersnake Clutch

katherinekwei.jpg

We first read about Katherine Kwei in Vogue a year and half ago and though intrigued by her use of traditional Chinese hand knotting in her bags, we were not fans (what can I say, we're a tough audience). The eternity knotting reminded me of kitschy things sold on street corners in Taiwan and Hong Kong when I was growing up and all the long fringes are just too busy and well, fringe-y on a big bag. It also didn't seem very functional (I can just imagine it catching on anything and everything during my frantic days of running around town!). After seeing the latest clutches from Kwei, however, I am finally warming up to her quirky bags. The new clutches are small and cute, and even with the fringe and knotting, it works (because they are small and not cumbersome). And considering her extensive background in fashion and design (Louis Vuitton, Zac Posen, master's degree from London College of Fashion) I am confident she will continue to grow as a bag designer and wow us with unique and whimsical designs. Donna Knotted Watersnake Clutch $1,005 at Neiman Marcus. What do you guys think? Snob or Slob?

LKA:

I love Katherine Kwei bags! I bought a knotted shoulder bag last year and found it to be highly functional and uniquely attractive for every day use. Some of the larger bag designs are not my taste, but the small clutches are beautiful! With the mainstream department stores selling these bags now, my only fear is that they will appear everywhere like Gryson, Kooba, etc.

Just wanted to share, I picked up the Majorelle bag in white patent yesterday and I love it! The bag looks even better in person than in the pics!

jane:

I find the smaller clutches more appealing as well. this is very cute and quirky.

definitely snob. this clutch is so cute on so many levels. i like the black ten times more than the white version though.

Blah! I'll pass :)

Slightly slob...

Though, as a design person, I do appreciate the technique and the idea. I think it might be better in a different color: maybe a pale pink, or very subdued metallic. Also, what if the color of the clutch underneath (peeking through) complimented the color of the bag, adding more visual interest? (ex: subdued champagne/gold with another metallic like pewter peeking through, or a seafoam green. ivory with a pale blush pink peeking through... etc.)
